Premature baby wins battle for life
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, April 18
Baby of Pinky Chowdhary (29), born three-and-a-half months premature and weighing only 550 g is a winner, said doctors treating her at Sri Balaji Action Medical Institute from where she was discharged today.

After going through several ups and downs in the past two-and-a-half month wherein she battled sepsis, feed intolerance and bronchopneumonia, the baby is now double her birth weight (1.2 kg) and without any apparent physical or neuro developmental handicaps which are usual in such premature babies.

According to doctors, the infant might be Delhi's tiniest baby to survive after being delivered in the 15th week of pregnancy. The case was a challenge, said head of department and neonatologist-in-chief Dr. Dipak K. Guha who, along with Dr. Virender Kumar, decided to put in all efforts to save the baby.

A resident of Nihal Vihar in Nangloi, Pinky, a case of chronic severe hypertension, was taken to the hospital in her 15th week of pregnancy for delivery. It was 13 years after her previous abortion she had conceived and doctors perceived it as a case of repeat abortion.

Dr. Guha said, "It appeared to be a case of abortion and this was because the age of foetal viability in India is generally taken as 27 weeks and 700 g."

"The infant had to be kept at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for about 12 weeks. She had a renal failure on Day 3 which was improved with conservative management. The baby also had to be put on ventilator for 18 days," he added.

During her stay at the NICU, the doctors gave her antibiotics, prophylactic antifungal and IV calcium and total parenteral nutrition.

Doctors point out that despite the availability of modern and high-tech gadgets and the understanding of the problems of the extreme premature babies, it still remains a challenge to save those whose birth weight is below 1,000 g.

With understanding of the complications associated to extreme premature babies still being a challenge.
