New Delhi, April 11
The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) today released its annual budget of Rs 3951.78 crore for the financial year 2013-14, announcing an increase in the net revenue surplus from Rs 40.56 crore in 2007-08 to Rs 233.57 crore during 2013-14.

"The DJB's dependence on the government for operational costs has been reduced from Rs 380 crore in 2009-10 to zero in 2013-14," said DJB Chief Executive Officer Debashree Mukherjee.

The Board, in the presence of Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, also the Chairman of DJB, approved the budget which included Rs 1869.35 crore for the Plan and Rs 2082.43 crore for the Non-Plan for the year 2013-14.

While presenting the budget, the CEO focused on the estimates for the year 2013-2014, including the projected revenues and expenditures, both Plan and Non-Plan.

Mukherjee also briefed the members about the revenues and the expenditure of the previous financial year.

"The pressures of the ever-increasing population of the city are a big challenge before the Board which holds the responsibility of fulfilling the need of one and all," said Dikshit.

Touching on the issue of Delhi being dependent on its neighbouring states of Haryana and UP, Mukherjee informed the Board that the DJB is currently producing 835 MGD of water to meet the demand of 18 million people in the city.

Mukherjee also said that the Board is about to initiate the construction and commissioning of a number of underground reservoirs with booster pumping stations to improve the distribution network in the far-flung areas.

The Board was also informed that the DJB has 34 waste water treatment plants at 20 locations with an installed capacity of 544 MGD which will further increase to 628 MGD in 2013-14 after the commissioning of the sewage treatment plants (STPs) in Yamuna Vihar, Kondli, Kapashera and Chilla.

Govt to engage cooperative sector in housing
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, April 11
The Delhi government has decided to explore possibilities of re-involvement of cooperative sector in housing projects. Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said that the cooperative group housing societies helped in construction of thousands of dwelling units during the last three decades, though, their role has been curtailed due to non-availability of land for housing sector.

She said that the state government would take up the matter with the Union government and impress upon the Delhi Development Authority to allot unused land to the cooperative group housing societies in order to overcome the shortage.

"The Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) under the city government has substantial quantity of land which is yet to be assessed. The government would like to consolidate it and use it for housing sector through cooperative group housing societies," she said.

The available land would also be utilized for the housing of weaker sections.

"The government would explore all possibilities to involve cooperative sector in housing in the city," she said while interacting with office-bearers of cooperative movement including cooperative leader V.P. Singh and MLA Dr. Bijender Singh.

Stressing the need to strengthen women cooperatives, Dikshit said that the cooperative sector has become the bedrock of economic development across the country.

The cooperative movement has helped a large number of people from different sections of society.

It has changed the living standards of people with functioning of the credit and thrift societies, housing societies, women cooperatives and cooperative banks. The credit and thrift societies and cooperative banks have contributed substantially in this field, the Chief Minister added.

Health workers honoured on Safe Motherhood Day
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, April 11
Observing Safe Motherhood Day here today, awards were given to health workers whose role is vital to the delivery of preventive and curative health care in the country.

Skilled health force is one of the key determinants of good health. The frontline health workers, such as Auxiliary Nurse Midwives, Staff Nurses and Lady Health Visitors have a great role in this regard, given the fact that India is still lagging when it comes to the MDGs 2015 (millennium development goals) related to maternal mortality rate as well as infant mortality rate.

India may have reduced MMR significantly from 437 per one lakh live births in 1999 to 212 by now but it is a long way with the MDG's target being 109 per one lakh live births by 2015.

Given the crucial role of frontline health workers, the government has instituted National Safe Motherhood Awards for health providers.
