New Delhi, April 7
With the arrest of six accused, the Delhi police today claimed to have worked out an extortion case in which a businessman was threatened by his partner.

The accused were identified as Sanjay of Rohtak, Naveen of Jind, Ramkesh, alias Ramu, of Jind, Vikas Sharma of Neemrana in Rajasthan, Sanjay Jain and Vinay Jain of Delhi. It was a classical case of business partnership turning sour wherein one of the partners, Vinay Jain, had hired hardened criminals to settle scores.

The victim Mukesh Aggarwal and Vinay Jain were partners. On some issue, they fell out, the police said.

Mukesh received an extortion call on March 9, demanding Rs 5 crore. The caller threatened to kill him if his demand was not met. He had given Mukesh three days to arrange for the money, the police said.

The businessman got a complaint registered with the Special Cell. Soon he received another extortion call. The caller told Mukesh that he had received orders from the 'bhai' to kill him if the payment was not made.

During investigation, the police found that the call was made by a person at Jind in Haryana. Raids were conducted at Jind and the accused Ramkesh was arrested. Some incriminating documents were recovered from his possession.

On the basis of Ramkesh's questioning, one Naveen of Jind was also arrested.

Naveen disclosed that he had procured the SIM cards at the instance of one Sanjay of Rohtak for executing the plan. Sanjay was also traced and it was confirmed that the extortion calls were made by him.

All the three accused were arrested. Their interrogation revealed the names of Sanjay Jain and Vinay Jain as the masterminds. They were also arrested yesterday.

Experts stress early diagnosis of congenital heart defects
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, April 7
Discussing the role of foetal echocardiography and its benefits in detecting congenital cardiac defects, experts here stressed the need for an early diagnosis of congenital heart defects.

Congenital heart defects are the most common birth abnormalities and 10 per cent of neo-natal mortality is because of congenital cardiac complications.

Associated with chromosomal defects, in most cases, the condition is diagnosed when the baby becomes critical requiring multiple cardiac interventions.

An average estimated cost for one intervention is around 1.5-2 lakh and early diagnosis plays a significant step not only to minimise interventions and save the life of the unborn child, but also to minimise cost, said cardiologists during a three-day foetal echocardiography workshop.

"The most important consideration in all foetal intervention is mother's safety. The intervention is designed to correct cardiac defects of the unborn baby minimising the risk on mother's health. Through this event, we want to train doctors on the best clinical practices available in the future," said Dr John M. Simpson, chief facilitator of the workshop.

Echocardiography is used in ruling out the serious structural cardiac defects and life-threatening arrhythmias.
