University told to fill SC seats:
The Punjab State Scheduled Castes Commission on Thursday directed Punjabi University, Patiala, to fill the SC seats within six months. Presiding over a meeting with university authorities, Rajesh Bagha, chairman of the commission, told them to fill all the vacant seats reserved for SCs at the earliest.

Interactive website for NRIs soon: The state has set up a mechanism in the form of an interactive website to redress grievances and take up various issues pertaining to the NRIs belonging to the state. The website will be launched by end of next month, said Bikram Singh Majithia, NRI Affairs Minister. 

Rules to make state smoke-free issued: A state-level meeting of senior officers of the Health Department was held here on Wednesday. Vini Mahajan, Principal Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, released guidelines for an effective implementation of the Cigarettes & Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003. The move aims at making Punjab a tobacco and smoke-free state. She also released health workers' guide in Punjabi so that the field-level workers are sensitised about the law and the importance of its effective implementation.

Dr Talwar appointed health adviser: Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Thursday appointed former PGI director Dr KK Talwar as honorary adviser to the Punjab Government for health and medical education. Dr Talwar is also chairman of the Medical Council of India.

Baba Mehra memorial:
The Punjab Government will set up a memorial to honour Baba Moti Ram Mehra, a devoted disciple and selfless servant of Guru Gobind Singh. The foundation stone of the memorial is to be constructed at a cost of Rs 6 crore. The followers of Baba Mehra constituted a charitable trust in his name and later constructed a gurdwara at the site where he was lost his life.

Man robbed at gunpoint
: Three unidentified persons today robbed a local spare parts supplier, Pritpal Singh, of Rs 10.90 lakh at gunpoint, near the National Institute of Sports, Patiala. Police said Singh was riding back home on his motorcycle with the money when unidentified persons came in a Verna car and robbed him. Senior Superintendent of Police Gurpreet Singh Gill said a case under Section 328, 34 of the IPC and under the Arms Act had been registered. 

Pbi varsity releases admission schedule: Punjabi University Vice-Chancellor, Dr Jaspal Singh, has approved the academic calendar and admission schedule for the year 2013-14. Giving this information, Dr SS Khaira, Dean, Academic Affairs, said the last date to submit admission forms for various courses without late fee is June 26, 2013 while the last date with late fee of Rs 500 is July 1, 2013; Rs 1,000 to July 5, 2013 and with late fee of Rs 2,000 up to the interview day.

College starts BSc in air tourism:
Government Ranbir College will start a BSc, a three-year degree course, in Air Tourism Hospitality Management from the ensuing academic session. The college has already got the approval from the DPI (Colleges), Punjab. A total of 40 seats have been allocated for the BSc course. The college will also begin an MSc, a two-year degree course, in Information Technology from this session.

CBFC member appointed: The Central Government has appointed former councillor Chander Mukhi Sharma as member of the Central Board of Film Certification with effect from April 9. Sharma had won the MC elections from ward No. 1 on two occasions in 2001 and 2006 on congress party ticket. Currently, he is the president of the Chandigarh Basketball Association.
