Unsafe temples of learning
Students left at mercy of elements in rickety structures
Ludhiana, April 11
While the Punjab and Haryana High Court has sought an action-taken report from the state government regarding shifting students from five unsafe government schools in Ludhiana district following a petition filed in public interest, there are a number of other unsafe school buildings in the city, which pose a huge risk to students and the staff.

Compulsory retirement for officer 
Ludhiana, April 11
Acting tough against several officials and employees of the Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) for dereliction of duty, the state government today sent Executive Officer Avtar Singh Azad on compulsory retirement; three retired officials will have to forgo 5 per cent of their pension for a period of one year; another official has been reverted from the post of EO to Superintendent while a couple of others have been issued a warning.

MC drivers call off strike
Ludhiana, April 11
Mayor Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria addresses protesting MC drivers in Ludhiana on Thursday. Drivers of the municipal corporation, who had gone on a "flash strike" yesterday demanding a permanent job for kin of their former colleague Darshan Lal, today called off their protest after city Mayor Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria promised that a resolution for this purpose would be adopted in the next general house meeting of the civic body.

2 robbers in police net; mobiles recovered
Ludhiana, April 11
With the arrest of two persons, the city police claims to have busted a gang, which used to rob people in the city by arming itself with a clamp (a tool used by gardeners).

Theft at factory unit

Thieves struck at a factory unit located in the Jiwan Nagar Focal Point area and decamped with raw iron material and electronic items worth over Rs 1 lakh.

Biscuits served in mid-day meal
Ludhiana, April 11
Complaints regarding mid-day meal served to the students in government schools refuse to die down. Though the contractor claims that he is serving the meal according to the schedule and after it being sampled by the teams appointed by him, no guidelines were being followed while preparing the meal. The very purpose of the government's scheme to provide a nutritious diet to poor and needy students seems to be getting defeated due to discrepancies in the mid-day meal.

Jatinder Singh, alias Langra, alias Bunty Having failed to find a clue to the whereabouts of notorious criminal Jatinder Singh, alias Langra, alias Bunty, who escaped from police custody while he was being brought back after a court hearing in Phillaur, the city police today issued an advisory, indicating that the criminal might have formed a gang.

Holiday planner told to refund fee, pay compensation
Ludhiana, April 11
The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has ordered Country Vacations, a holiday planner based in Hyderabad and having an office on the Mall Road here, to refund a membership fee of Rs 99,000 along with interest, and also pay Rs 10,000 as compensation to complainant Rajinder Chawla for deficiency in services and unfair trade practice.

Secy issues guidelines to Health Dept

Principal Secretary, Health, Vinni Mahajan has instructed all the Civil Surgeons in the state to remain fully equipped for the coming season of vector-borne diseases. She issued these instructions at a state-level meeting held in Chandigarh yesterday.

Govt sets up advisory board

In order to boost the micro small and medium sector, the Punjab government has constituted a state-level advisory board, which has 35 members. In this board, various government agencies are members and Rajeev Jain, former general secretary of the United Cycle and Parts Manufacturers Association, has been nominated as a member.

Power hike uncalled for: CICU
Ludhiana, April 11
An across-the-board increase of 9.06 per cent in the power tariff by the Punjab State Energy Regulatory Commission has been vehemently opposed by the CICU. Avtar Singh, general secretary of the CICU, issued a statement in this regard today. The tariff for the small power industry has been increased by 12.5 per cent, from paise 510 to paise 574, for the medium industry by 11.55 per cent from paise 561 to paise 626 and for the large consumers by 13 per cent, from paise 561 to paise 633.

Crop diversification need of the hour: VC

"Crop diversification is required in Punjab as the Central government will not continue with the paddy crops. Punjab has to shift the subsidies from paddy to pulses," says Vice-Chancellor Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon during an interaction with farmers at PAU.

Ambulance 108 largely ferries expectant women
Ludhiana, April 11
Most of the Ambulance 108 service vehicles seem to be used only for ferrying pregnant women from home to hospital and back after delivery. These ambulances are busy in dealing with pregnancy cases most of the time. As per the record, a majority of cases tackled by such ambulances were those of pregnancy, which is 40 per cent of the total.

Despite Right to Education having been implemented, teachers continue to flout the rules and punish children. Yet another case of corporal punishment, a teacher allegedly beat up a student with a stick has come to light.

Maths practical exam
1,000 teachers yet to get their dues
Ludhiana, April 11
Punjab School Education Board conducted class X maths practical examination for the first time, which was highly appreciated by teachers, students and the parents. But the teachers, who had taken this initiative, still have not been paid their dues by the board, thanks to the lackadaisical attitude adopted by the board officials. As many as 1000 teachers in the district are yet to get their dues.

The Additional Diputy Commissioner of Police II (ADCP), Bhupinder Singh Sidhu stated that nearly 138 persons had been arrested various cases by the police of zone- II of city during last two months.

Two more courses added
Ludhiana: The GHG Khalsa College of Pharmacy, Gurusar Sadhar, a premier institute of pharmaceutical education and research has been granted for two more postgraduate courses by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for. The courses will commence from 2013 session. In addition to already running M Pharma, Pharmaceutical Chemistry there will be M Pharm (Pharmacology) and M Pharm (Pharmacognosy), each course will have an intake of 18 students.

Foreign students participate in Africa conclave
Ludhiana: The students from African countries, enrolled in various postgraduate programmes of the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), participated in the Africa Conclave, held in Ludhiana. The event, organised by the Chamber of Industrial and Commercial Undertakings (CICU), aimed at strengthening the bilateral relations between India and African countries. The Ambassadors, Secretaries, Counsellors from the Embassies and office of High Commissioners of Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, Kenya, Niger, Rawanda, Sudan, Ethiopia, and Namibia in India, participated in this conclave.

CRIME

Thieves decamp with electronic goods
Ludhiana, April 11 
Thieves struck at an electronic shop located near Veer Palace on Chandigarh road and decamped with LCDs, LEDs and other expensive electronic items including home theatre. The matter came to light when the owner of Krishna Electronics arrived at the shop here this morning and was shocked to find it ransacked. He immediately informed the police about the incident.
