DU rolls back move on Hindi
New Delhi, April 10 The northeast students of Delhi University who had been protesting against the imposition of Hindi over the last one month today ended their protest after an assurance from the university. As many as three protest demonstrations were organized by students under the banner of the North East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) at Delhi University and the fourth demonstration was held at the Ministry of Human Resource Development. “Through our campaign we were able to create pressure on Delhi University and the government. Today the university administration informed NEFIS that all our demands had been accepted,” said one of the NEFIS members. “This is a very positive development. Thousands of students would have suffered in case of imposition of Hindi. The fact that the administration agreed to roll back implies that the decision to make Hindi compulsory was a flawed one. These reforms need to be put to debate, otherwise students may lose a lot more than anyone can realize,” he added. |

‘Highest number of deaths of homeless in Delhi’
New Delhi, April 9 During the same period, the cumulative toll of such deaths of people, either living on the streets or whose bodies remained unclaimed in various states and UTs in the country, was 21,489. These disturbing facts come at time when various human rights commissions do not have a mandate of looking at the concerns of the homeless while in Delhi, the city government and the agency concerned—Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB)—have failed to act with a sense of urgency on constructing shelters and rather have been careless in their approach, as pointed out by the Delhi High Court many times. “The RTI we filed showed the deaths to be of alarming proportion. They could be even more with cops trying to cover up. This once again highlights the apathy of the government with there being just 176 shelters for nearly 1.5 lakh homeless in Delhi—all run by voluntary organisations,” remarked Indu Prakash Singh, head, CityMakers Programme, Indo-Global Social Service Society (IGSSS) and the executive committee member of the SAM: BKS. There have been clear directions from the Delhi High Court to respect the human rights of the homeless. In this regard, former UN Special Rapporteur Miloon Kothari said, “The High Court has passed numerous interim orders yet the authorities continue to treat the homeless with hostility and the primary agency responsible for the homeless, DUSIB, lurches from crisis to crisis. Surely Delhi’s homeless deserve better than a callous, corrupt and uncaring government.” |
