30 die of H1N1 infection in Haryana since January
Sirsa, February 21 As many as 30 persons have died of H1N1 infection in Haryana since January this year, out of which five deaths have been reported in Sirsa alone. The health authorities have so far taken samples of 36 patients out of which 17 have tested positive for Swine Flu in Sirsa this year, said Dr Deep, nodal officer for Swine Flu in Sirsa. Earlier, 21 laboratory-tested positive cases of H1N1 virus infection were detected in Sirsa in January 2010. One person had died due to the disease that year. Sudden return of the virus to an unusual extent this year is baffling the health authorities in Haryana. A spokesperson of the Haryana Health Department said that while effective steps had been taken to check the spread of H1N1 swine flu, since January 1, 2013, 455 suspected cases had been tested and screened and out of them a total of 198 cases had been reported as positive. He said so far 46 positive cases had been treated and discharged from hospitals. As many as four cases were treated by home quarantine and treatment had been completed. The spokesperson said 49 positive cases were still on home quarantine. He said a total of 30 persons had so far lost their lives due to influenza A H1N1 since January 1, 2013. He said a maximum of five deaths had been reported from district Sirsa, four each from Panchkula, Faridabad and Karnal, three each from Bhiwani and Kurukshetra, two from Gurgaon and Jind and one each from Fatehabad, Hisar, Kaithal. The spokesperson said Chemoprophylaxis was given in 597 positive cases as a preventive measure. As many as 132 cases were reported positive by government laboratories and 66 by private labs. The Health Department, Haryana, had urged the people to cooperate with the health authorities and in case of any symptoms of H1N1, they should contact the nearest health institution of the state government for treatment.

State aims at rehabilitation of sex workers
Chandigarh, February 21 While stating this, Sumita Misra, Director General, Women and Child Development Department, said the beneficiaries of the scheme were the female sex workers and sexually abused women, who were identified by the agencies of the state government with the help of NGOs, expert bodies and demographers. She said the scheme had been launched to focus on capacity building or skill building and development of these women to make them self- dependent. The scheme also aimed at the rehabilitation of the beneficiaries by providing them vocational training through the Women Development Corporation and ITIs, identified by the Department of Technical Education. She said other objectives of the scheme, included assistance in securing loans for establishing self-employment ventures, provide back-ended capital subsidy on loans and arrange the sale of the products by organising exhibitions. She said the women would be trained in manufacturing of spice powder and packaging, book binding, printing and dyeing of clothes and many other activities. She said a stipend of Rs 3,000 per month would be given to the each trainee under the scheme. The duration of training would be between one month to one year depending on the trade.

Martial arts classes for women in Panipat
Panipat, February 21 The martial arts classes will be held on every Sunday at DAV Police Public School and Police Lines, Panipat, from 10 am to 12 noon and a counselling centre will be established at the venue to educate women about their rights and the train them to respond at the time of crisis. Information regarding training has been sent to all schools and colleges, a police spokesperson said. Students of Classes VI to VIII will get training on February 24 and college girls on March 3. Working girls and women will get training in self-defence on March 10 and March 24 respectively. Housewives will undergo training on March 31. All those who are interested can get themselves registered for the training at the Indian Institute of Technical Health Education (IITHE), Samalkha-Hatwala road, DAV Police Public School, Panipat, Police Lines, Panipat, and SP, PRO, office, Panipat. “The idea is to arm our girls and women with basic self-defence techniques so that in times of trouble they can protect themselves. We will organise such camps in future also," DAV Police Public School Principal Ritu Dilbagi said.

Free treatment for hepatitis C patients in Ratia
Fatehabad, February 21 Saket Kumar, Deputy Commissioner, Fatehabad, held a meeting of the Health Department to prepare a road map for the purpose today. Kumar, who is himself a doctor and a postgraduate in Pediatrics from Patna Medical College, said he had been reading about the prevalence of the disease in The Tribune before coming to Fatehabad. Saket Kumar said besides providing treatment to the existing patients, the authorities would look into the reasons for the spread of the disease. Hepatitis C is spread through parental route, transfusion of infected blood and physical relations with an infected person. Teams from PGIMS, Rohtak, had carried out screening and mopping operations in February last and identified 1,848 positive
Later, during enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay (ELISA) tests, the PGIMS authorities found that 1,503 persons were suffering from the disease. During the survey, the teams had covered nearly 32,000 people of Ratia town and over two-lakh people living in "dhanis" of the Ratia area. The operation has been launched on the intervention of Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who was apprised of the prevalence of a large number of hepatitis C patients in the area by the local residents during the Ratia byelections in November 2011. However, the authorities have yet not started any medical treatment of the infected patients, resulting in a lot of resentment among people. Though the health authorities recently began providing treatment to the patients under homeopathic and ayurvedic systems of medicine, the patients and their relatives are not satisfied with the step.

Survey to assess nutritional status of children
Chandigarh, February 21 Director general of the department Sumita Misra said the main objectives of the project were to assess the nutritional status of children below five years of age on the basis of anthropometry parameters such as height and weight and the prevalence of clinical signs of nutritional deficiency and morbidity among children and feeding practices of infants. Other objectives of the survey are to estimate the iodine levels in the household, salt samples used for cooking by spot testing kit and to assess knowledge and practices of various functionaries of Integrated Child Development Scheme, she said. She said the state government would spend over Rs 11.16 lakh on the survey to be conducted by National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad.

Sonepat, February 21 Besides the director of the college, Dr RC Siwach, and medical superintendent MS Punia, senior professors, Dr Shyam Singla in the Surgery Department of PGIMS, Rohtak, Dr Pradeep Khanna in community medicines, Dr VK Katyal in general medicines and Dr Vivek Kaushal of radiotherapy gave their presentation in the programme. Dr Siwach said the training programme was aimed to develop the teaching and working efficiencies of the teachers in this newly incepted college. The first batch of 100 students was started in the college from this academic year, he said and added that such training programmes would be organised in future also.

GVM college overall champion in science exhibition
Sonepat, February 21 The college Principal, Dr Jyoti Juneja, said the exhibition was divided in seven subjects and the GVM college participated in all subjects. The college students got first position in three subjects, second position in two subjects and third position in one subject. Besides, four students of the college were also awarded the prizes of the best presenters in the exhibition. Sweta and Nisha got the first position in botany, Nasrin and Annuu in computer science and Brijlata and Geetanjali were placed at the first spot in psychology. Similarly Sarika and Sukany got second position in chemistry and Neha with Ankita were runners-up in zoology. The third position was bagged by the team of Neeru and Ashima in geography. The best presenters included BSc students Priya in physics, Sarika in chemistry, Nasrin in computer science and Brijlata in psychology, the Principal added. Dr Junela claimed that after the inclusion of private colleges in the exhibition competition in 2009, GVM college had been winning the overall championship at the district and state levels since then. Yamunanagar, February 21 The topic of the programme was "Motivation and Principles to Improve Technical Teaching Skills". The event started with lightening of lamp by the chief guest Prof Puran Chand Tewari, a senior Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at National Institute of Technology, Kurukshetra, along with college Principal Dr Kuldip Singh and Dean Academics Prof Harish Mahendru. In his inaugural speech Dr Kuldip Singh welcomed key speaker Dr Tewari and stressed upon the importance of the topic. In his lecture Dr Tewari explained various techniques for self-motivation. He said teachers should explain a topic by practical demonstration. In the second session, Dr Tewari described the seven techniques such as faculty-student contact, student-student cooperation and support, active learning by team work, quick feedback system. Sonepat, February 21 This was stated by the Vice-Chairperson of the Haryana Commission for Women, Chander Prabha, while inaugurating "Swaranjali", an annual cultural event, at Government Women College, Murthal, recently. "Besides, making provisions of various incentives, including scholarships for girls students, the women university at Khanpur Kalan is the first university in northern India for the women, located in rural areas," she said. She added that these facilities had made the future of girl students bright and secure. She said the modern period had thrown a challenge for women to shoulder more responsibilities in society as well as in family and they should always be prepared for that. "Women can play a major role in the eradication of social evils," she added. College principal RS Baniwal said that the college had been encouraging the girls from villages to continue their higher education in the college. Dr Rajkala Deswal, coordinator of the programme and vice-principal of the college, gave details of the different events, being organised during the annual cultural event.

Over 1 lakh beneficiaries under 'Ladli' scheme
Chandigarh, February 21 While stating this here, Haryana Woman and Child Development Minister Geeta Bhukkal said the scheme was implemented to combat the menace of female foeticide and arrest the declining sex ratio in the state. Under this scheme, a grant of Rs 5,000 per year per family was being given on the birth of second daughter in a family for five years. Earlier, the amount was invested in Kisan Vikas Patras in the name of the second daughter through mother or father or guardian and the matured amount of about Rs 96,000 at current rates of interest will be paid after the second daughter attains the age of 18 years. Now the government has started to invest this amount in an insurance scheme of LIC of India from August 2008 for providing increased benefits, she added. Bhukkal said the Kishori Shakti Yojna was being implemented in 87 projects of Integrated Child Development Scheme for improving the health and nutritional status of adolescent girls in the age group of 11-18 years.

33-KV substation work at Sirsa village completed
Sirsa, February 21 The commissioning of the substation was done recently by a committee of officers of different wings of the
DHBVN, who energised the substation in the presence of Sumer Singh Yadav, Director (Projects). Yadav said a transformer of 10 MVA capacity of 33/11 KV level had been installed successfully and energised at the substation while provision had been kept for another transformer that could be set up as and when requirement arose. The substation had been connected to the 132-KV substation,
Kurangawali, by extending the 33-KV line, Kurangawali-Panjmana, by 10.20 km for getting power supply. With the commissioning of the substation, over 3,000 consumers of different categories, including about 1,000 tube wells, in these villages would benefit by way of increased voltage and a regular power supply. Earlier, the area was being fed from the 33 KV-substation,
Rori. Due to an increase in the number of connections, the substation had become overloaded and as the villages that fed the Lehengewala substation were at a larger distance from
Rori, power was being supplied to the villages through long feeders, causing interruption in power
supply. Yadav said Sirsa had now a network of 68 substations, including a 400-KV substation at

HAU to hold training on fruit processing
Hisar, February 21 The Director of the centre, Dr Santosh Dhillon, said the training course was exclusively for plus two pass youth between 18 and 25 years of age and belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. She said 25 candidates would be selected for the training on the first-come first-served, basis by the Departmental Selection Committee. The course Director and Head of the Centre, Dr Saleem Siddiqui, said such types of employment- generating courses were being organised by the centre from time to time so that interested youths may be acquainted with the latest scientific processing techniques. The course Coordinator, Dr Rakesh Gehlot, said in this training programme, practical demonstrations would be conducted on processing and preservation of value-added fruits and vegetables products like jam, jelly, marmalade, cheese, toffee, sauce, chutney, pickle, murrabba, candy, ready-to-serve drink, nectar, squash, syrup, etc. He said application on the prescribed performa would be received till March 2.

Yamunanagar, February 21 Dr Preeti Jindal, a senior consultant at a hospital, said a large number of women from the district were suffering from recurrent miscarriage. She said there were many causes, including genetic defects, clotting disorders, uterine abnormalities, hormonal imbalance, stress, smoking, alcohol and if treated properly, recurrent miscarriages could become a thing of the past. Dr Jindal, who specialises in recurrent miscarriage treatment, said soon after conceiving, a woman who suffered a miscarriage also had to undergo physical, mental and emotional trauma. The specialist said ignorant of the treatment options, many leading gynaecologists asked such couples to go for adoption after miscarriages while 90 per cent of the women, who suffered from problematic pregnancies and miscarriages could be treated with the latest advents in the medical science. She said it was only due to lack of awareness that couples continued to suffer needlessly. She said as many as 50 per cent of women, suffering from recurrent miscarriages, had genetic abnormality of foetus, while 25 per cent had thrombotic disorders, 20 per cent suffered from unexplained reasons and the rest of the pregnancies got aborted due to infection, uterine weakness, diabetes and thyroid disorders. Dr Jindal asserted that a number of gynaecologists were still using the TORCH test in multiple miscarriage cases to find out the reasons of pregnancy loss, which facilitated only the detection of virus in body, which could have caused loss of pregnancy. |

Status of Fatehabad projects to be online
Fatehabad, February 21 Fatehabad Deputy Commissioner Saket Kumar, who presided over a meeting of senior officers of the district to review the progress on the projects announced by Hooda, directed the District Information Officer and in charge of the National Information Centre (NIC) at Fatehabad to upload the status of the projects online. Additional Deputy Commissioner Rajiv Rattan informed the DC that out of the 245 projects announced by made by Hooda in Fatehabad district, as many as 150 projects had been completed while construction work of 93 projects was in progress. The projects announced by the Chief Minister include sports stadiums, hospitals, water works, auto markets, model villages, grain market, power sub stations, construction of streets. Hooda is expected to visit Fatehabad again in March as several new projects like the extension of the mini-secretariat and a primary health centre were awaiting inauguration. Chief Parliamentary Secretary Prahlad Singh Gillankhera, who represents Fatehabad in the state Assembly, said Hooda was expected to visit Fatehabad next month but the date of his visit had not been confirmed so far. Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Saket Kumar said a website of the Fatehabad district administration would soon be created where all the information pertaining to all departments would be made available. “All lands records of the district are available online and soon information on the 36 essential services will be made online,” Saket Kumar said.

He emphasised that dairy was not only an instrument of economic security but also nutritional security as the milk contained all essential nutrients required for growth and development.
