Man booked for using forged documents for job

Karam Singh, a resident of Pandori Gola village, has been booked by the police for using fake documents for getting a job in the Indian Army. Karam has been booked on the complaint of his elder brother Kulwant Singh.

Ex-serviceman commits suicide
Hoshiarpur, January 21
An ex-serviceman, Jorawar Singh (60), resident of Bohan, committed suicide by consuming poison last night. According to the police, Jorawar Singh in his suicide note stated that his son Lakhbir Singh got married to Devinder Kaur about two years ago. His daughter-in-law Devinder Kaur, her mother Jasbir Kaur, aunt Jaswinder Kaur and uncle Jaswinder Singh used to torture him without any reason. This had disturbed him, due to which he consumed poison.

Villagers block traffic
Hoshiarpur, January 21
Residents of Ahrana Khurd staged a dharna and blocked vehicular traffic in front of their village on the Hoshiarpur-Phagwara road from 4.30 pm to 9 pm last evening in protest against the registration of an FIR under Sections 323, 324 and 34 of the IPC and Section 3 of the SC/ST Act-1989 at the Mehtiana police station against Balbir Singh, his wife, brother Joga Singh, son Balbir Singh, all of Ahrana Khurd, yesterday.

Govt employees organise gate rally

On day one of their three-day protest, employees of the Deputy Commissioner’s office organised a gate rally here seeking fulfilment of their pending demands. District Employees Association president Sukhbir Singh Tikka said the employees had been suffering due to the alleged indifferent attitude of the higher authorities. Tikka claimed that the anomalies of the Fifth Pay Commission had not been removed till date.

Woman succumbs to burns, husband arrested

Following the death of Mandeep Kaur, wife of Rakesh Kumar, who attempted to commit suicide on January 17 by setting herself ablaze, the Bulhowal police has added Section 304 B of the IPC in the already registered case under Section 498 A of the IPC.

Gang of mobile tower battery thieves busted, 4 arrested

Gurdaspur, January 21
The Gurdaspur police has busted a gang of inter-state robbers who used to steal costly wires and batteries from mobile towers rendering these non-functional for days and hitting the connectivity in towns adjoining Gurdaspur.

The worst affected was Kalanaur township from where the five-member gang operated.

One of the robbers used to work in a reputed mobile company following which he brought in his experience and expertise to rob the company of lakhs of rupees by stealing costly wires and batteries from mobile towers.

After receiving several complaints, the Gurdaspur police formed a team of
senior officers comprising SP (Detective) Jagjit Singh Saroya, DSP (City) Navjot Singh and SHO of Kalanaur Police Station Jagdeesh Kumar.

Acting on a tip-off, the police officials raided a house in Wadala Bangar village, falling in Kalanaur tehsil, and arrested four members of the gang
while the fifth one identified as Hardeep Singh managed to flee.

The persons who have been nabbed are Sandeep Singh, Mangal Singh, Kashmir Singh and Baljinder Singh.

Sandeep Singh, who used to work in a mobile company and had stints at New Delhi and Pune, was well versed in the working of towers. He also worked for some time in the Delhi Metro.

“The gang used to earn Rs 30,000 for a half hour’s labour. Consumers used to complain of connectivity problems following which the police zeroed in on the gang. They used an assortment of weapons, including knives, country-made pistols, and steel cutters to steal wires and batteries which they would later sell in and around Gurdaspur,” said the SP (Detective).

Narcotics, including 2 kg powder, were also seized from their possession.

Senior officers said the gang targeted towers in some cities of Rajasthan.

The police has also recovered a tempo from their possession which was used to transport the stolen goods.

The five accused have been booked under various sections of the IPC and the Excise Act and Arms Act.

The SP (Detective) added that two of the four accused had been arrested earlier under the Excise Act, but subsequently they got back into the business after taking advantage of the lax excise laws.

Man booked for using forged documents for job

Karam Singh, a resident of Pandori Gola village, has been booked by the police for using fake documents for getting a job in the Indian Army. Karam has been booked on the complaint of his elder brother Kulwant Singh.

A case under sections 465, 468, 471 of the IPC has been registered against the accused. Karam got the job on September 19, 1984, and got retired on November 31, 2010.

According to official records, Karam got recruited on the basis of a fake pass certificate of class IX.

He was recruited as a driver in the General Reserve Engineer Force (Grip Department).

Kulwant Singh submitted a criminal writ petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court to get the case registered against his brother. On the orders of the High Court, the district police conducted an inquiry in the matter and registered a case last evening.

The police said the accused was absconding.

Villagers block traffic

Residents of Ahrana Khurd staged a dharna and blocked vehicular traffic in front of their village on the Hoshiarpur-Phagwara road from 4.30 pm to 9 pm last evening in protest against the registration of an FIR under Sections 323, 324 and 34 of the IPC and Section 3 of the SC/ST Act-1989 at the Mehtiana police station against Balbir Singh, his wife, brother Joga Singh, son Balbir Singh, all of Ahrana Khurd, yesterday.

The agitators alleged that the FIR was falsely registered against Balbir Singh's family by the police and demanded its cancellation.

Later, DSP Kuldeep Singh Heer intervened and assured them that justice would be done. Only then they lifted the blockade and the traffic was resumed.

Woman succumbs to burns, husband arrested

Hoshiarpur, January 21
Following the death of Mandeep Kaur, wife of Rakesh Kumar, who attempted to commit suicide on January 17 by setting herself ablaze, the Bulhowal police has added Section 304 B of the IPC in the already registered case under Section 498 A of the IPC.

According to the police, Mandeep Kaur succumbed to her burns at the Civil Hospital yesterday. Following her alleged torture by her husband and mother-in-law for bringing dowry from her parents and for not conceiving Mandeep Kaur attempted to commit suicide. She had sprinkled kerosene on her body and set herself on fire. She was badly burnt and was admitted to the Civil Hospital with 85 per cent burns.

Her husband Rakesh Kumar had recently returned to India from Muscat, where he had been earning his livelihood. The police has arrested him and his mother is still at large.
