Falling in love with a Hoshiarpur woman proved costly for an Iranian citizen. The woman, identified as Ritu of local Bassi Khwaju, allegedly duped Ramin Salamati, the Iranian citizen based at Sharjah, UAE, of gold ornaments and cash worth Rs 35 lakh on the pretext of marriage.

The Model Town police on Tuesday booked Ritu and Hardeep Kumar of the Sutehri road area under Sections 420 and 120-B of the IPC on the complaint of Ramin.

In October 2010, Ramin, dealing in supplying seafood, met Ritu at Hotel Regal Plaza's Bollywood Cafe, Burdubai, Dubai, where she worked as a dancer.

Later, he fell in love with Ritu following which the girl proposed him for marriage. But Ramin Salamati demanded some more time before taking the final decision as he wished to get familiar with Ritu and her family. After some time, Ramin agreed to marry her.

Meanwhile, Ritu returned to India to pursue her career here. But she remained in touch with Ramin.

In August 2011, Ritu told him that she had disclosed her relationship to her parents and they wanted to meet him.

He came to India where her father gave him shagun and insisted that marriage be performed at an early date. But, Ritu insisted that marriage be performed in November, 2012, as she wanted to do a course of beautician at Mumbai.

In his complaint with the police, Ramin alleged that Ritu took cash and gold ornaments from him on various occasions on one pretext or another.

He returned to Dubai and after some time Ritu asked him to deposit money in the account of Hardeep Kumar so that her aunt can make arrangements for the wedding.

He again came to India in September 2012 and stayed in Ritu's house. During this period he gave gold jewellery and cash to Ritu. In the first of week of November 2012 Ritu went to her maternal grandmother's house in Swajpur village (Tanda).

After four days, Ramin came to know that Ritu had eloped with Hardeep Kumar.

Jalandhar, January 16
In Punjab, more than 33,000 persons have died of cancer in the past five years. This means 6,600 persons died of cancer every year across the state.

This number is likely to go up as two per cent of the population is yet to be covered under a survey launched by Punjab's Health Department. The maximum number of cases have been reported from Ludhiana district, reveals a report prepared on completion of the first phase of the survey.

Stunned over the findings, the health authorities are planning to re-examine those suspected to have cancer as well as confirmed cases. Residents of Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Tarn Taran and Pathankot districts are less affected by the disease, the report figures show. Of 54 lakh houses in the state (with a 2.73 crore population), more than 47.69 lakh houses (over 2.48 crore population) have been checked for cancer in the first phase.

Executive Director, State Health Systems Resource Centre, Punjab, Dr PL Garg, said Ludhiana had 3,169 cancer patients; Ferozepure 2,041 and Amritsar 1,789.

"The figures are not too alarming but the disease, which is fast growing, is a matter of concern," said Dr Garg.

He claimed that the date was yet to be medically analysed and teams had been constituted for the purpose.
