Nawanshahr, January 18
Electronic equipment, including television sets, LCDs, washing machines, inverters, CFL tubes, refrigerators, worth lakhs of rupees were damaged due to sudden increase in voltage at Teachers Colony here today.

Residents of the colony --- Chander Hans Pandey, Surinder Kumar, Krishan Kumar Chhabra and Anita Rani --- said voltage fluctuation occurred as Powercom officials had not replaced the old cables.

“In most of the localities, the electricity cables have worn out. Besides, the web of old cables having naked joints are hanging low at a number of places, causing frequent trips and posing a threat to residents,” they said while accusing the local Powercom officials of adopting dilly-dallying attitude on the issue.

Powercom (City) SDO, Jaswant Rai, expressed ignorance about the damage done due to sudden increase in voltage. He said he had not received any complaint in this regard.

When asked about changing electricity cables in the town, the SDO said about two months back, he had prepared the estimate and sent the same to the Executive Engineer for sanction.

The affected residents demanded suitable compensation from the Powercom as well as strict action against the erring officials under the Right to Service Act.
