Power woes reach Abohar bus stand:
The Powercom that had earlier discontinued electricity supply to the main sewerage disposal works plunged the main bus stand in darkness on Thursday evening by stopping power supply to force the cash-strapped Municipal Council to pay dues estimated to be in crores.

‘Make NRI co-chief of NRI panel’:
Three-time former Canadian MP Gurmant Singh Grewal on Friday urged the state government to act on the suggestion of NRIs of having more say in the Punjab NRI Commission by appointing an NRI as co-chairman of the panel. He also stated that elected Punjabi leaders from both the ruling group as well as the Opposition would host SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal during his proposed visit to Canada this summer.

Three youths killed in accident:
Three youths of Muktsar district were killed in a road accident on Friday. All in their early 20s, the youths were travelling in a car to Chandigarh when it collided with a truck near Kothe Theh village on the Moga-Kotkapura state highway. The deceased have been identified as Gurinder Singh, Prabhjeet Singh and Vikramjeet, all residents of Sadarwala village in Muktsar. They were scheduled to attend a marriage in Chandigarh.

Missing lineman found dead: Three days after an assistant lineman in the Punjab State Power Corporation went missing from his house in Uggoke village of Moga, his body was recovered from near a canal in Channuwala village on Friday. Investigation officer Suraj Pal Singh said the deceased, Ajmer Singh, was posted at Baghapurana and his family had lodged a complaint about his going missing allegedly during duty hours three days ago. The police has registered a murder case against unidentified persons.

Pakistan flag burnt:
The activists of Youth Congress Punjab here on Friday burnt the Pakistani flag at Jagraon to register their protest against the killing of two Indian soldiers by Pakistani army after crossing Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir some days back.

Meeting:A meeting of government employees, working on contractual basis, in various departments was held  here on Friday. Workers from all the departments alleged that they are grossly under-paid. Employees from all the departments have decided to launch protest campaign against the state government for  not giving them any facilities and very less  salaries.

More than 250 patients were examined at a free check-up camp organised by the District Homeopathy Department in collaboration with NGO Helping Hand Charitable Trust on Gurpurb here on Friday.

Thieves kill guard, ransack shops:
Burglars ransacked eight shops in Jeobala village, 12 km from here, on Thursday night and brutally killed a watchman, Gurnam Singh (45). A case under Section 460 of the IPC has been registered. The attackers took away gold and silver ornaments, besides cash amounting to Rs 1.5 lakh. The police got information about the incident in the morning.

DEHRADUN

Schools closed till Jan 20: Dehradun district administration has ordered closure of all schools due to the cold wave. All the schools will remain closed on January 19 and 20. The order was issued by Dehradun District Magistrate BVRC Purushottam. The schools will reopen on January 21.
