No headway in lockers' case
Jalandhar, January 20 Investigations in the case are, however, in full swing and the police shall be checking the CCTV footages of cameras in the vicinity of the bank to search for any clues of the thieves. Talking to The Tribune, ADCP Naresh Dogra said, "The bank did not have any CCTV camera despite instructions issued to it many times in this regard. But we will now be checking out the CCTV footages of all cameras in the vicinity. The nearest camera is in a retail outlet nearby and we shall be checking to see if any unusual activity has been caught on it. CCTV cameras on nearby roads etc will also be checked for footage." Owing to the deftness with which the theft was done and the fact that the thieves seemed to be well versed with the goings-on at the bank, the police is not ruling out the possibility that the role of bank staff might also be suspect. While earlier there were reports that one of the thieves had left behind his mobile phone in the bank, Dogra denied the reports, saying the mobile in question fell from a locker. Sources said the police had also begun rounding up persons for questioning regarding the case. |

Open manholes an invitation to mishaps in city areas
Jalandhar, January 20 Interestingly one such open manhole is lying uncovered for over two months in a locality falling under Punjab local bodies minister Bhagat Chunni Lal’s Assembly segment. The open manhole is located at lane number three of Tara Singh Avenue falling under ward number 42 in the Jalandhar West Assembly segment. The MCJ authorities have failed to cover the open manhole despite bringing this to the notice of Mayor Sunil Jyoti and area councillor Baldev Singh several times. As a result, the open manhole is posing a danger to the lives of a number of persons, especially the children passing through this lane daily. When The Tribune team visited the area on Sunday, it found that the open manhole created double trouble for the residents. Firstly, there was the impending risk of falling of children in the open manhole and secondly the sewage overflowing from the manhole. As a result, the sewage water has accumulated in the area and at some vacant plots near the open manhole. The stink emanating from the accumulated sewage water was also giving an open invitation to diseases. Besides a deep and wide pit of nearly 6 feet by 6 feet was also created due to sewage overflowing around the open manhole on the kutcha lane of the locality. An active member of Tara Singh Avenue Welfare Society, Dr Rohit Arora, said “They had informed area councillor Baldev Singh soon after the slab around the manhole was broken when a car passed over it around Diwali over two months ago.” Dr Arora said, “There is the risk of occurrence of any mishap anytime, as a number of children daily pass through the lane as a playschool is also located here.” Besides they had also lodged a complaint telephonically with the MCJ. The MCJ authorities gave them complaint number as 341, he added. “When no effort was made to cover this open manhole, the representatives of the society met Mayor Sunil Jyoti twice. He telephoned to the official concerned in their presence to get the manhole covered immediately but to no avail so far,” he rued. Alleging that poor quality material was used in the construction of manholes while laying sewer in the area a few months ago, Dr Arora stated, “A number of slabs around manholes had already broken.” Dr Arora further stated, “The MCJ authorities have seemingly not learnt any lesson from the incident that occurred in an area of the same ward in which the five year old boy Sagar had died after falling in one such uncovered manhole at the Kutcha Kot locality on the Basti Peer Dad road in November, 2011.” While Mayor Sunil Jyoti could not be contacted despite repeated attempts, area councillor Baldev Singh told The Tribune, “I had given in writing to the MCJ SDO concerned to cover this open manhole a few days ago and the same would be covered soon.” |

She said people in both rural and urban areas were witnessing unannounced power cuts.
