Cops told to face trial
Jalandhar, January 16 Senior citizen and a resident of Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar SP Luther had alleged in a complaint in 2002 that his son Sandip Luther was kidnapped and tortured by the Jalandhar police at the behest of a senior IPS officer. He had said that his son Amit Luther was married to Richa Mehta, daughter of Tirlok Mehta, while Tirlok Mehta's brother was married to one Monika. Monika, he had alleged, was close to one IPS officer. Monika, according to SP Luther, had sought the help of his son Amit Luther in a property dispute. As Amit refused to do so, Monika got irked. She got Amit Luther and Tirlok Mehta framed in a false case. They were, however, exonerated after an inquiry. Thereafter, his other son Sandip Luther was picked up by the then Kartarpur SHO Angrez Singh, (now posted as in charge CIA Staff, Jalandhar), the then Police Division 4 SHO Nirmal Singh (now a retired DSP) and Additional SHO Harbhajan Singh (now retired) on May 8, 2002, and he was allegedly tortured by these police officials for no fault. SP Luther had also referred to a probe conducted by the state Human Rights Commission which had held that Sandip Luther was kidnapped. After hearing the arguments, Judicial Magistrate GS Sekhon issued summons and directed all three accused to appear on February 28. A senior IPS and an ACP-level officer have not been summoned for want of any "direct evidence" against them. |
