Jalandhar, January 8
Showing no concern for the health of small children, who have to brave the bone-chilling weather conditions to attend their schools, the managements of the majority of CBSE-affiliated private schools in the city and surrounding areas kept their primary wings open even today.

On the other hand, following the publication of a news report in The Tribune today depicting the plight of the tiny tots, Deputy Commissioner Shruti Singh issued a direction to the managements of all the primary schools, including those affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), for closing them till January 13.

Besides, Shruti Singh rescheduled the timing of senior classes from 10 am to 3.20 pm keeping in view the adverse weather conditions.

Earlier during the day, thousands of small children studying in various CBSE-affiliated private schools located in different parts of the city again braved the cold weather conditions even today as the managements did show any concern for their health.

The managements of the primary wings of the majority of the CBSE-affiliated private schools, including APJ School, Cambridge International and Shiv Jyoti School, thought it wise to keep their schools open in the chilly weather. As a result, thousands of tiny tots reached these schools shivering in the adverse weather conditions.

Though some of the schools had closed their pre-primary wings for a few more days and even rescheduled the timings of their primary wings, yet it was very difficult for the small children to attend schools in the adverse weather conditions.

Expressing gratitude to The Tribune for highlighting the plight of the children, Poonam of Shaheed Babu Labh Singh Nagar heaved a sigh of relief when she came to know that the DC had ordered closure of all the primary schools in the district. Her son is studying in the primary wing of a CBSE-affiliated private school located near the Sodal railway crossing.

Meanwhile, social activist Rajat Mohindru, who demanded closure of primary wings and rescheduling of timings for senior classes, thanked the DC for promptly accepting his and the parents genuine demand.

At the same time, he criticised the school managements for not closing their primary wings at their own.

Meanwhile, some students of senior schools demanded that their schools should also be closed for a few days due to the ongoing cold wave. Neha, a class IX student of DSSD Girls Senior Secondary School, said, "The DC should have ordered closure of all the schools, including the senior ones, as they also feel cold in this chilly weather."

Kapurthala: Meanwhile, Kapurthala DC Alaknanda Dayal has also taken a serious note of the managements of majority of primary schools not adhering to the Punjab Government order of closure of all the schools till January 13. On her instructions, DEO Roop Lal said, “If any primary school is found open in the district, proper action will be initiated against its management.” "Besides, the senior secondary schools should also reschedule their opening timings to 10 am as per the state government order," he added.

Deputy Commissioner’s orders
“All primary schools, including those affiliated to the CBSE, will remain closed till January 13 and the timing of senior classes has been rescheduled from 10 am to 3.20 pm,” orders Shruti Singh, DC.

A bid by a Malsiyan-based woman to commit suicide in front of the office of the Inspector-General of Police (Jalandhar zone) was foiled by policemen this morning.

The woman, Jaswinder Kaur, reached the IG’s office this morning and tried to get inside to meet the officer. The policemen, including women constables, on duty did not let her meet the officer, following which the distressed woman threatened to commit suicide and took out poison from her pocket. The constables virtually overpowered her. The woman was later sent to the New Baradari police station.

The woman was detained and sent to the rural police that was handling her case.

The woman has been running from pillar to post for justice and had already filed a complaint at the Shahkot police station in this regard.

She alleged that the police had been trying to hush up the case and favouring the youth and his family members. She has also expressed displeasure on the way by which a woman police officer, who is investigating the case, has been forcing her to settle the issue.

Earlier, she had filed a complaint to the SSP, who subsequently marked an inquiry to the DSP, Shahkot.

The woman had also tried to meet Punjab DGP Sumedh Singh Saini on November 26, but the police

prevented her from doing so. She had threatened to lodge her protest before the office of the Inspector-General of Police from January 2 onwards if the youth was not brought to book.

Jalandhar, January 8

The number of complaints by residents facing difficulties in getting the Aadhaar cards is rising by every passing day, courtesy shortage of staff and machines preparing the cards. Not only this, an indifferent attitude of the employees engaged is also responsible behind the mess.

Lakhwinder Singh Arora of New Ganesh Nagar visited a makeshift centre twice for getting his card prepared near Mithapur Chowk in Multani market but failed to get his work done.

“I along with my wife, daughter and son went to the makeshift centre on Monday at 2 pm. Two women present there told us that they were going for lunch. We kept on waiting but they did not return,” Lakhwinder Singh Arora said.

“We again went to the centre on Tuesday afternoon. We kept on waiting for our turn while standing in the queue for over two-and-a-half hours. At 4.30 pm, they got submitted mine and my daughter’s forms and completed the formalities and issued us a slip bearing enrollment number. But they did not deposit the forms of my wife and my son claiming that the time is over and we will have to come next day. I kept on requesting them to get our forms submitted but to no avail,” an apparently irked Lakhwinder added.

“While they refused to entertain us despite making repeated requests, they accepted the forms of several other “sifarshi” forms. I have made up mind to file a complaint to the authorities concerned in this regard to take action against the erring staff,” he said.

District Food and Civil Supplies Officer TS Chopra said, “I will look into the inconvenience caused to the public by the employees of this makeshift centre located near Mithapur Chowk.”

‘Release CD of Bikram’s abuses during Maghi Mela’

Phagwara, January 8
Former Bholath MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira has asked the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) to release CDs of Bikram Singh Majithia while hurling abuses in the state Assembly last month during the Maghi Mela to expose how abusive behaviour was being encouraged by Deputy Chief Minister.

Addressing a press conference here in Pahgwara, Khaira said Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal seemed to be helpless. The same, he said, was apparent during the NRI Sammelan when the CM was seen cautioning Majithia.

Khaira termed as a bundle of lies the Chief Minister’s statement wherein the latter claimed that he had spent 17 years of his life in jail. Khaira said it was only late Jathedar Gurcharan Singh Tohra who had spent a maximum period of eight years in jail.

He alleged that the Badal government was befooling the people while making claims to make Punjab a power surplus state in this year while at the same time people were facing prolonged power cuts amid severe cold. —OC
