Mystery shrouds woman’s death
Jalandhar, January 13 The police has arrested her husband, Mohit Sethi, an engineer, father-in-law Mahesh Sethi, and mother-in-law Pooja Sethi, after registering a dowry death case under Section 304-B of the IPC on the complaint of the victim's father Ravinder Kumar, a resident of Panchkula. Meanwhile, the cops suspect foul play behind the incident. Pooja Sethi found Richa Sethi's body hanging in her room on the first floor of the house after she returned home from her duty. She informed her husband and son and subsequently the police was informed about the incident. Receiving the information, the police reached the spot and removed the body. An unsigned paper note was recovered from her room on which it was written: "Nobody will be responsible for my death". The police said Mahesh Sethi and Pooja WEre bank employees. Mohit and Richa came in contact while pursuing studies in Panjab University. As the Sethi couple was not happy with their relation, the duo got married in court almost five years ago and started living in Chennai. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), West, RPS Sandhu, said the police visited the house and found that the body was hanging from the ceiling fan of the room, while her legs were touching the bed. Her vein of a wrist was also found slit and blood was oozing out. The police also found a bottle of sauce broken inside the bathroom and a washbasin damaged, the ACP added. During questioning, Mohit claimed to have left for the market while his parents were in their respective banks when Richa took the extreme step, the ACP added. The police informed Richa's father Ravinder Kumar, a resident of Sector 4, Panchkula, and arrested the trio on his complaint. Ravinder reached the city late last night and lodged a complaint against the Sethi family. In his complaint, Ravinder Kumar alleged that the Sethis were harassing his daughter for dowry, which had strained Mohit and Ruicha's relations for some time. The body was handed over to the family this evening after postmortem by a board of doctors at the local Civil Hospital. Meanwhile, the police is investigating the case to know the reasons which forced the girl to take the step, Sandhu added. |
Auto-rickshaw driver held for death of aide
Jalandhar, January 13 The incident occurred near Basti Adda last evening when Deepu, the auto driver was travelling with his friends - Sonu and Pradeep - and their vehicle reportedly overturned. In the accident, Pradeep sustained serious injuries, while the two escaped unhurt. Station house officer, Basti Bawa Khel, Makhan Singh, said the auto driver called Pradeep's mother Raj Rani, a resident of Rattan Nagar, informing that her son had met with an accident. The SHO said the duo then took away the injured and instead of admitting him in the hospital dumped him in the Raja Garden locality. The critically injured might have died while being transported, the SHO added. Panic gripped the Raja Garden area as the body was noticed late in the evening. On verification, the police identified him as Pradeep Kumar. Meanwhile, the police has recorded the statement of the victim's mother Raj Rani and a case under Sections 304-A and 201 of the IPC was registered against Deepu and his accomplice Sonu at the Basti Bawa Khel police station. The police has launched a hunt to nab Sonu, who is absconding since the incident. The body was handed over to the family after a postmortem examination at the local Civil Hospital this afternoon. |
Six, including three jawans, arrested in flesh trade racket
Jalandhar, January 13 Acting on a tip-off, the police sent a decoy customer to a residential flat and nabbed three Army Jawans - Ashwani Kumar, Sohan Prasad and Surjit Kumar - along with Kamlesh, Sonia and Amandeep Kaur. Station house officer, Division No 7, Som Nath said the couples were found in the flat when the police conducted the raid. He said Kamlesh, who is the kingpin of the racket, had been running the trade from the same flat for the past couple of years. She had been supplying girls to the customers for Rs 2,500 to Rs 5,000 per night, Nath added. Meanwhile, the police has registered a case under provisions of the Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act against them and further investigations were on. |

Factory workers suffer burn injuries
Jalandhar, January 13 Station house officer Division No 4, Surinder Pal Singh, revealed that the incident occurred in Juneja Soap Factory, where Jatinder Kumar, a manager, and his assistant, Shambhoo, sustained burns after certain chemical fell on their faces. The incident occurred when the duo was reportedly busy in work and a chemical, to be used in manufacturing soap, fell on them. The injured are undergoing treatment at a hospital, he added. The SHO revealed that in their statements, the victims claimed that the incident occurred due to their own negligence. However, certain factory workers, on the
condition of anonymity, revealed that the factory owners were trying to hush up the case and had pressurised the victims to give statements in
their favour. |

Jalandhar, January 13 The project is aimed at the diversification of agriculture and to bring out wheat and paddy from
traditional cycle of cultivation. It will be based on the ambitious Indo-Israel Project, a joint venture of both the countries to envisage quality production of
vegetables besides improving the prospects of vegetable exports. The project would be the first in the state and the second in the country. The vegetable growers and farmers would be acquainted with new and scientific techniques, not only to boost the production but also to supply raw material for the agro-based processing industry, she claimed. The deputy commissioner further said that a
hitch poly-house would also be set up in an area, measuring 2000 sq meters, to produce quality seed for the vegetables. Three units of naturally ventilated poly-house would also be set up in 6000 sq meter area, for the cultivation of
cabbage, tomato and cucumber. Six units of net house and eight units of walk-in tunnels would be set up in 3000 meters and 4000 meters respectively. For the cultivation of cucumber, low tunnels had been designed, she added. |
'Lohri of imperialism' burnt
Jalandhar, January 13 Workers gathered on the occasion and raised slogans against capitalism. The district leader of the party, Jaswinder Singh, while speaking on the occasion, said that the American capitalist forces were attempting to capture the natural resources of countries across the world. Owing to which the common man was falling prey to unemployment, corruption, inflation and poverty. Opposing the recent move of the government, to bring FDI in retail, he said, the entry of Walmart in any country, in the past had spelled trouble for the small business and farm sector of that country. Alleging that the leadership and parties of this country were vying to please the American imperialist forces. he further said that the same was being done at the cost of the future well being of cottage industries and farmers of our country. The CPI (ML) New Democracy while celebrating the birth centenary year of the Ghadar Party, as an anti-imperialism year burnt the Lohri of imperialism, as one of the ceremonies to oppose imperialism during the year. Groundnut removed from lungs of 10-month-old
Jalandhar, January 13 Dr HJ Singh, who conducted the surgery said, “The child was also turning blue at times (cyanosis). In fact the child had been taken to many doctors during the past 25 days, but no one was able to diagnose the problem correctly and it was mostly ruled as a case of recurrent pneumonia/bronchial asthma. However, when we conducted an X-ray of the chest, it raised the suspicion of the presence of a foreign material in the child’s lung.” The grandmother of the patient told the hospital authorities that the family was preparing for the first Lohri of the child and expressed doubts that the child might have inhaled something but was not sure about it. The groundnut was removed bronchoscopically, a procedure that continued for an hour. The operation was conducted on January 11 and the child was discharged today. Dr HJ Singh, bronchoscopist, said that little children needed to be supervised, when nuts and eatables lying around them. For a little children, a seemingly harmful thing like a groundnut or eatables during festivals like Lohri could prove fatal for their health. |

Jalandhar: Lohri festival was celebrated in MK College of Education, Shahpur and CTIMIT, Maqsudan Campus of the CT Group of Institutions. An extension lecture was organised for which, Dr Davinder Singh Chhina, Director, Punjab Cultural Promotion Council, was invited, to express his views on “multi-culturalism and human rights”. The lecture highlighted the value of international peace, friendship and growth by imbibing the great morals of giving equal respect to all the sections of society. Dr Chhina quoted that it was very essential for the teacher as well as student community to be aware about human rights. He suggested multi-culturism and human rights should be introduced as independent subjects in schools, colleges and universities, which would further strengthen human peace and prosperity. Life history of Swamiji was also highlighted through a speech by a student. In the end, Dr Chhina was honoured with memento by college Principal Dr Harvinder Kaur, for promoting multi-culturalism and international peace. Lohri was also celebrated in the college in its true spirits. Sweaters and toys were gifted to the little girls living in the nearby areas. Shiv Jyoti Public School, Jalandhar celebrated 150th Birth Anniversary of Swami Vivekanand on 12th January, 2013. The members of the managing committee, Principal Vibha Sharda and Vice-Principal Neeru Nayyar, along with members of students’ council, lit the lamp in front of the portrait of Swami Vivekanand. The programme started with the bhajan and songs loved by Swami Vivekananda, followed by an enactment depicting the glimpses of Swamiji’s life by students. An exhibition on the life and philosophy of Swami Vivekanand was also displayed. The members, students and teachers also participated in the rally, taken out in the city. Bank cashier commits suicide
Phagwara, January 13 The deceased was working in the rural-branch of Bank of Baroda, in nearby village, Mehtan, and was under severe depression. The police has sent the dead body of the deceased to local civil hospital, for post-mortem examination In another incident the dead body of one unidentified person was found in mysterious circumstances from a canal in Phagwara on Dosanjh-Kalan road, last evening. There were injury marks found on the dead body, the police said. In third accident, one villager, Chuharr Singh, of Village Madhopur, was killed in a road accident here last night. |

2 held for molestation
Nakodar, January 13 Ladda was arrested under Section 323/452/34 IPC, on the charges of molesting a woman here last evening. Two of his other accomplices, Kaka and Todi, were still at large. In second criminal incident, the police has arrested Harwinder Sonu, under Section 323/354/341 of the IPC, on the charges of allegedly attacking a girl, with sharp-edged weapons, who resisted molestation in Nakodar last evening. The Injured girl was admitted to Nakodar Hospital. |
