Abduction bid causes scare
Jalandhar, January 15 Though the targeted nursing student managed to escape from the clutches of the youths and took refuge in a college hostel, the incident has created tension among women in the city and nearby areas. The incident occurred adjacent to the nursing college when the girl was on her way to the nursing institute at about 6 pm and two motorcycle-borne youths Amrit Pal, a resident of Gurdaspur, and Ramnjeet Singh of Amritsar, intercepted her. The duo, after an altercation, allegedly attempted to drag her and tried to make her sit on their bike, but the alert girl managed to escape from the place. She, reportedly, rushed to the nearby hostel of the institute and took refuge inside. The police revealed that the youths chased her till the hostel, but were stopped and nabbed by the institute’s security guards and subsequently the police was called. The girl, in a statement to the police, claimed that Amrit, who belongs to her village, had been forcing her to be friendly with her, said Balbir Singh, area station house officer. The youths were remanded to judicial custody by a local court. The incident has, meanwhile, created an atmosphere of insecurity among women who have demanded addition deployment of women police force in and around the educational institutes where eve-teasers and anti-social elements keep on loitering. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Sarabjit Singh claimed that a sexual assault response team (SART), led by Assistant Commissioner of Police, had already been constituted for safeguarding the women. Moreover, a round-the-clock helpline (1091) has been introduced for the purpose. Moreover, every police station has been provided additional woman constables, two each, to provide foolproof security cover to the women, the DCP added. Night patrolling has also been intensified in and around the city, he claimed. |

Rajiv Awas Yojna may get delayed
Jalandhar, January 15 A detailed plan report of the project to the tune of Rs 49 crore put before Housing and Urban Development Coporation Limited, a nodal agency for financing housing and urban infrastructure activities in India, has received quite a few objections. The agency has demanded that the site plans for each slum locality be given with the minutest details. It has also sought a soft copy of the DPR and all tables and expenditure details mentioned in it in a "conformed pattern". The various slum localities for which the scheme was being sought included New Anand Nagar, Guru Nanak Nagar, Tej Mohan Nagar, Kot Sadiq and certain pockets in the Bhargo Camp, Abadpura and Mithapur areas. The officials of the B&R Wing of the MC have again got onto work to finish the requirements in a week's time so that the objections could be cleared in a meeting scheduled to be held in the last week of this month. If the MC misses this deadline, the project may then have to be put on the back burner till further proposals are sought on the matter by the Centre. Of the total Rs 49 crore, an amount of Rs 24.48 crore is to come from the Centre and 20 per cent each is to come from the state and the Municipal Corporation. The beneficiary himself is to spend 10 per cent of the cost of dwelling from his own pocket. The scheme is akin to the ongoing Integrated Slum Housing Development Project, but is more flexible in terms of approach with regard to construction plan. The Executive Engineer (B&R), Chaman Lal, said the team was fully confident of getting it cleared by January 31. "We are working on the objections raised so that they can be removed at the earliest," he said. |
