MC fails to take action against violators
Jalandhar, January 18 The biggest violation that has come up in the past three days is an illegal hoarding right in front of the MC’s own new administrative complex. This unauthorised hoarding put up for the reception of new state BJP chief Kamal Sharma has pictures of top BJP leaders, perhaps owing to which the officials failed to take any action. The hoardings stands today, even a day after the event. Hoardings regarding the government’s forthcoming polio immunisation plan, too, have been put up illegally across the city. Such illegal hoardings also continue to remain installed around the tehsil complex and important intersections of the city. As per the new regulations started in the city in accordance with the Punjab Outdoor Advertisement Policy-2012, all hoardings with social, religious, political, sports or government messages have to be booked in advance on a token payment of Rs 100 per hoarding for a week’s time. The MC has also earmarked 15 sites with 76 slots for putting up such hoardings. Mayor Sunil Jyoti said, “The prevalence of illegal hoardings had certainly minimised. We would issue more warnings before finally acting upon the violators.” |
All 7 candidates allowed to contest NRI Sabha polls
Jalandhar, January 18 All seven candidates - sitting president Kamaljit Hayre, Jasbir Singh Shergill from the UK, Pritam Singh Narangpuri from the USA, Jagjit Singh Toor of the UK, Sarabjit Singh of Italy, Sukhwant Singh and Gurjeet Kaur, both from Germany - have been given clearance for contesting the polls. Both Hayre and Shergill had reportedly raised objections against each other’s candidature. The objection against Hayre was that he was a British national and hence ineligible for contesting the polls. The SDM said the communique of the Additional Advocate General mentioned that the candidate could be barred if he was neither born nor brought up in India. But Hayre was allowed to contest since he was born in the UK, but returned to India at the age of four. Ever since he has done his schooling and pursued his college studies here. Hayre proved that he had been here for the past 40 years. Hayre, too, reportedly leveled allegations against Shergill, which he was not able to prove. The officials, however, have invited all candidates tomorrow to explore the possibility of conducting the elections unanimously. |
Two killed in road accidents
Phagwara, January 18 In another accident, a villager, scooterist Avtar Chand, 51, of village Bilga Patti was killed on the spot when the scooter he was riding was hit by a speeding truck near Maio Sahib last night. The deceased was working as patwari. The truck fled after hitting the scooter. The police has sent the body for postmortem to civil hospital and registered a case against the truck driver. |
Mayor’s flag march has little impact on encroachments
Jalandhar, January 18 Despite the top authorities taking a tough stand against those occupying the road illegally, several vendors selling shoes, plastic goods, flowers, fruits, socks and mufflers, currency garlands and eatables continue to put up stalls on the roads. While a few vendors have chosen some vacant plots or pulled their vends away from roads, there are many who continue to do business crossing the yellow line. It was perhaps the flag march effect or the rain effect today that most of the shopkeepers, except a few bicycle sellers and plastic good sellers, had displayed their stuff within the shops. “The roads seemed somewhat clear. The exercise will have an impact only if the officials continue the drive, start challaning those indulging in encroachments and hold meetings with some errant shopkeepers and vendors to convince them on the matter,” said Bhavneet Sharma, a shopper. Another visitor Akshit Gupta said the biggest problem in the markets was now lack of adequate parking space. “Most shopkeepers have their delivery vehicles parked in front of their shops owing to which there is only a little space left for cars to park. I had to make two rounds of Nakodar Road to look for a suitable parking space,” he claimed. Municipal Corporation officials said they now planned to target internal market areas in the next week before which they would be duly warned to retreat from roads. |

Ambedkar Bhavan awaits completion even after 13 months of opening
Jalandhar, January 18 Almost all pending sanitation and electricity work has been completed and the flooring at the entrance have been done with utilisation of Rs 54 lakh grant from the Social Welfare Department. What primarily remains is cutting off of the boundary wall of the tehsil complex from the front and erecting of an entrance gate there to allow entry from that side. The building is yet to get an electricity and water connection. The incomplete building had been formally inaugurated on December 18, 2011, just before the Assembly elections, by minister Gulzar Singh Ranike. The building has come up at a cost of nearly Rs 1.55 crore. The staff members of the District Welfare Office, which is currently lodged on the third floor of the complex, have been long waiting for the bhawan to be complete so that they can shift there. Once opened, the 15 rooms will be used for dispensing benefits under various SC welfare schemes and providing free coaching to poor, bright kids for entrance examinations to professional colleges. It will also house a library from where the youth could find extensive literature about the life and teachings of the architect of the Indian constitution. A hall in the bhavan would also be made available for SCs for holding marriages, social functions and meetings. BS Tuli, XEN PWD, said the pending work related to flooring of parking area and entrance gate would be completed in a few days. He said the delay had occurred on account of late payment by the department. |
Three fake travel agents booked
Nakodar, January 18 In the first case, the police has booked Sonia of Jalandhar and Ishu of Ludhiana on charges of duping a villager, Lovepreet Singh, of Rs 1 lakh on the pretext of sending him to Malaysia. Neither the accused could send him abroad, nor returned the money. In the second case, the police booked Anil Kumar Mehra on charges of duping a local resident, Jasminder Singh, of Rs 67,000 on pretext of sending him to Doha, Qatar. It was alleged that despite repeated requests, the accused did not returned the money. No arrest has been made so far. |
Transport unions condemn deregulation of diesel prices
Jalandhar, January 18 Happy Sandhu and Jarnail Singh Garhdiwala, heads of the truck union and the mini bus operators respectively, said the Centre's decision to deregulate diesel prices has yet again burdened the people of the country. They said in Punjab, 70 per cent of the population is dependent on farming and transport and diesel consumption is high. By deregulating diesel prices, the government has bowed to oil companies. They said the decision would mean increased vegetable prices and transporters would be forced to increase transportation costs now. They appealed to the state government to put pressure on the Centre to revoke the decision and demanded that the state government decrease VAT on diesel to provide relief to transporters and farmers. They also appealed to farmer and transporter unions to collectively oppose the decision. Meanwhile, the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist), New Democracy also condemned the decision and said it was an attempt by the UPA government to please the corporates. State secretary Comrade Ranjit Singh said it was another example of anti-people policies of the government and its attempts to leave people at the mercy of oil companies. They called for intensification of the agitation on the issue by party activists and other unions across the state. |
Kapurthala firing incident turns out to be case of personal revenge
Jalandhar, January 18 Gafoor Ali was arrested on Thursday. Police sources said Gafoor Ali has confessed that he had resorted to firing to avenge his beating and humiliation by Bhaskar’s associates. The firing was earlier projected as a terrorist activity. Rajesh Kumar Bhaskar had alleged that the incident was a handiwork of some anti-national elements. In his complaint, he had alleged that the incident took place when he along with Joga Singh, city president of Sanman Samaroh; Palwinder Singh and Pardeep Singh, activists of the Shiv Sena, were discussing their programme to set afire the Pakistan’s flag near a petrol pump. Cooking up a story, Bhaskar had allegedly that one Ali Sheikhupuria and another youngster came to the petrol pump and asked for Bhajan Bhawanipuria. Suddenly Ali and his accomplice started firing causing injuries to Bhaskar and two others, the AIATF activist had further alleged. But police investigations revealed that the firing took place as Gafoor Ali, who was heavily drunk, was allegedly abused by Bhajan Singh. Gafoor Ali had fired from his .32 bore revolver. “Bhajan Singh and Gafoor Ali were known to each other for the past more than 10 years and they often consumed liquor at the same place,” said Kapurthala SSP Inderbir Singh. Bhaskar was shifted to Jalandhar’s Satyam hospital, the other two have been referred to DMC, Ludhiana. |

As many as 67 mobile teams and 30 transit teams have been set up by the Health Department for the polio drive. |
Young achiever
Jalandhar, January 18 Parul is the only school-level student from the state to have received the honour for the PM’s chosen top 100 this year. Talking to The Tribune, Parul said, “I feel very privileged to have received the honour. I had never thought I would make it this far. After the exams last year I was expecting 92 to 94 per cent marks, but never thought that I would score this high. And now, this invitation just takes things to yet another level. I feel honoured and extremely happy.” After pursuing her schooling from St Josephs Convent School, Parul pursued her studies for Class XI and XII from the Swami Sant Das Public School. While Parul was the state topper in the medical and non-medical streams for the May-2012 Class XII exams of the CBSE, she was also one the top scorers in the country, said her father Manmohan Kalia. An engineer with the Agriculture Department, Kalia’s joy knew no bounds as his daughter was invited to be a part of the Republic Day Parade through a letter sent by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development. Parul will also be felicitated by the ministry for her achievement. Kalia said, “We had always told her to excel in whatever she does. She was never asked to give in to the stiff competition. She also regularly participated in extra-curricular activities like quiz, etc. But she still managed to secure the top position. So her result was way better than our initial expectations. The invitation, however, is such a rare privilege. This is a really proud moment for me as Parul, who also secured the 100th rank in Punjab PMT, is currently pursuing MBBS at the Government Medical College, Patiala. When asked what field she plans to specialise in, she quips, “I haven’t yet set a target on any specific field. I will decide as per my capabilities.” Parul’s special trip to Delhi will last from January 25 to 28. Her travel, boarding and lodging expenses will be paid by the Central Government. |
