: Shiormani Akali Dal President Parkash Singh Badal has nominated former member of the Lok Sabha and former chief of the All-India Youth Akali Dal Amrik Singh Aliwal as general secretary of the party. In a letter issued on Wednesday, Mr Badal has placed on record the contribution made by Mr Aliwal in the election campaign of the party in this constituency.

NOMINATED: Mr Harvinder Happy has been nominated general secretary of the Kisan Cell of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee by its chief, Mr H. S. Hanspal.

TEST CLEARED: Four students of Tagore Public School have cleared the IIT screening test, the result of which was declared on the Internet recently. The four students are Anand Negi, Abhishek Bansal, Sargam Toor and Anuj Maheshwari.

Contest: A declamation competition was held at SKN Model High School on Tuesday. As many as 20 students participated in the contest and spoke on topics pertaining to Indo-Pakistan relations and female foeticide. Sheena of Class VIII bagged the first prize, Geetanjali of Class II second and Vanita of Class IX along with Usha of Class VIII shared the third position. Mr K.D. Arora, Principal, gave prizes to the winners.

A PLEDGE: Employees and advisors of Max New York Life Insurance celebrated their third successful year of operations here in a unique way by pledging not just their own eyes, but also of their family members to the eye bank at the PGI. Over 200 employees and advisors and their family members donated eyes during the anniversary celebrations on Tuesday evening, an official press note said on Wednesday.

GYAN YAGYA: A seven-day Srimad Bhagvat Saptah Gyan Yagya will be organised by the Shri Sanatan Dharam Hari Mandir Sabha from Sunday under the patronage of Bal Vyas Bhagwan Bhaiyaji from Vrindaban, according to Mr Raj Kumar Sharma, president of the sabha. The Mangal Kalas Yatra will take start at 7 am from the temple premises followed by discourse on Srimad Bhagvatam and bhandara will be distributed on the concluding day of the discourse.

CORE BANKING SOLUTION: The Union Bank of India on Wednesday launched the “Core Banking Solution’’ services in their Sector 35 branch. This facility will enable customers to avail on-line banking in 166 branches across the country. The Assistant General Manager, Mr Ravi Malhotra, said this was the second branch in the Chandigarh region having on-line banking facility. MEETING: A meeting of the Lok Janshakti Party was held here on Wednesday under the presidentship of the women’s cell of the party, Ms Latika Sharma. At the meeting, Ms Amarpreet Kaur was appointed as the president of the women’s cell of the district. Mr Upendra Dubey was appointed as the mandal president of the Kalka Assembly segment and Mr Mithan Lal vice-president. Mr Surinder Singh Chauhan was nominated as the general secretary and Mr Surinder Kashyap as secretary and Mr Jagdish Chand as the zone president.

HAILED: A Congress councillor, Mr S.S. Goel, on Wednesday hailed the landslide victory of the Congress in Andhra Pradesh. The Congress will form the next government at the Centre, Mr Goel said, claiming that the INLD would face its worst-ever defeat in Haryana.
