Hyderabad, May 12
As expected, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy is all set to take over as the next Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. The swearing-in ceremony will be a public affair at Lal Bahadur Stadium here on Friday at 1 pm.
YSR, as he is popularly known, was unanimously elected by the Congress Legislature Party, which met here today, as its leader in the presence of party observers Ghulam Nabi Azad and Shivraj Patil.
Born at Pulivendula in Cuddapah district on July 8, 1949, Yaduguri Sandinti Rajasekhara Reddy graduated from M.R. Medical College at Gulbarga in neighboring Karnataka. First elected to the Assembly in 1978 from Pulivendula, a constituency that has returned him five times so far, Reddy had served four terms in the Lok Sabha, before returning to state politics to lead the party in 1999.
Dr Reddy, who later hinted that a few ministers would take oath along with him, said that his government would strive to provide a “credible and transparent” administration and listed rural development, irrigation and employment generation as his priorities.
The party in charge for state, Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad, later talking to reporters, said it was up to the Telangana Rashtra Samithi, the alliance partner, to take a decision on joining the government.
