Centre clears dual citizenship

The long-pending demand of the people of Indian origin (PIO) for dual citizenship will be met in the near future, with the Centre giving its green signal to the proposal on the eve of the Pravasi Bharatiya Conference, scheduled to be held in New Delhi from January 9.

Missing govt paddy worth 97 lakh found
Ferozepore, January 5
In one of the biggest hauls, the police has recovered missing government paddy worth more than Rs 97 lakh allegedly from the compound of Satman Rice Mills, Guruharsahai. This paddy had been allotted to Pashupati Rice Mills Pvt Ltd, Abohar.

A pregnant woman died of jaundice here yesterday, even as residents of Kot Mit Singh and Guru Arjan Dev Nagar and adjoining areas alleged that contaminated water was being supplied to them.

Virtually rejecting the Kelkar committee recommendations, the BJP today favoured the retention of tax sops like interest reduction up to Rs 1.5 lakh, standard deduction and saving incentives.

Militants on extortion spree
Jammu, January 5
Militants went on an extortion spree in Rajouri robbing four villagers of at least Rs 55,000 at gunpoint, official sources said here today. A group of four to five ultras descended on Rajouri district’s Sarno village around 10 pm yesterday and extorted Rs 50,000 from Chuni Lal at gunpoint.

SYL: Haryana, Punjab get ready for battle

Emotions are stirred up in Punjab and Haryana as the time limit of one year set by the Supreme Court to complete and commission the SYL canal expires on January 15. Defence experts today welcomed the setting up of a Nuclear Command Authority (NCA) but stated that it was more or less on the lines of the Pakistani nuclear structure as it did not categorically spell out the chain of succession, both in political and military terms.
