Notice served on sugar mill over delayed payment issue Ambala, July 28 A notice has been served to the sugar mill management by the Cane Commissioner, Haryana, which states that the mill must immediately make payment to the sugar cane farmers. The notice stresses that it is obligatory on the part of the sugar mill to make payments and that several meetings in this regard have already been held. The notice was issued after the delayed payment matter was taken up by the Ambala Deputy Commissioner, Mr D.D. Gautam, with the state government. A letter was reportedly written by the Deputy Commissioner to the Cane Commissioner on July 25 giving details about the ongoing delayed payment issue. The notice was reportedly prepared on July 26 and served to the mill management through the Deputy Commissioner office, yesterday. When contacted, Mr Gautam confirmed that a final notice had been issued to the sugar mill management to make immediate payments to the farmers. “The notice states that if the sugar mill management fails to make the payments to farmers, the dues of the farmers will be treated as arrears of land revenue,” he said. Mr Gautam said a meeting of the leaders of sugar cane farmers and the mill management had been called tomorrow. “I must stress that we are monitoring the situation and in no condition will farmers’ interest be compromised. We will ensure that the interest of the farmers are looked after,” he said. Incidentally, the sugar cane farmers are becoming restive after the payments by the Banoundi sugar mill were delayed. Besides this, a dharna was also being observed in front of the office of the Subdivisional Magistrate, Naraingarh, for over past one month. The farmers also blocked the NH 72, last week. With BKU leaders lending support to the “sugar cane farmers cause”, the delayed payment issue has taken serious overtones. The BKU leadership, particularly the faction led by Mr Hari Singh Khokhar, has time and again visited the agitating sugar cane farmers to express support. A farmer who is awaiting payment from the Banoundi sugar mill said that delayed monsoon had dashed hopes of a bountiful crop. “We just hope that we would at least get sugar cane payments so that we do not have to face a financial crisis,” he said. |
