And now posters in
Bhajan’s favour Chandigarh, July 25 A large number of posters have appeared in various parts of the state, calling upon the people to urge AICC President Sonia Gandhi to appoint former Chief Minister Bhajan Lal as the Haryana unit chief. Printed on a glossy paper, the multi-coloured posters urge Mrs Gandhi on behalf of “the people of Haryana and Congress workers” to make “hardworking, experienced and honest Bhajan Lal” as the state party chief and strengthen the Congress in Haryana. Purported to have been published by Rajesh of the Congress Ekta Manch, a little known organisation, the posters urge the people to write to Mrs Gandhi at 24, Akbar Road, New Delhi, which is the AICC headquarters, a single-line request : “Ham Shri Bhajan Lal ko pradeshadhyaksh ke roop main chahte hain (We want Mr Bhajan Lal as the state Congress president)”. The posters also inform that already “10,000 request letters” have already been sent to Mrs Gandhi. The posters carry photographs of Mr Bhajan Lal and Mrs Gandhi also. The factions opposed to Mr Bhajan Lal are formulating their response to these posters. The response of the high command is not known. Neutral observers feel that whatever gains the Haryana Congress may have made by supporting the farmers’ agitation are likely to be frittered away by this open poster war, which is merely the manifestation of the deep-rooted factionalism in the party. |

Move on paid seats
in colleges opposed Chandigarh, July 25 Some parents intimated the TNS about the system of paid seats being introduced in the state. The guardians also brought the issue to the notice of the Higher Education Department of Haryana. The department, while expressing its inability to do anything about the matter as it was under the jurisdiction of the university, clarified that there was no plan to introduce the paid seat system in government colleges of the state. According to sources, the aided colleges under the varsity have been allowed to offer admission to students to the B.Com (Part I) classes in lieu of Rs 10,000. Each college is being allowed to admit 10 students in the paid category. Similarly, five students per college are being allowed admission in the postgraduate level in science, commerce and arts streams against a payment of Rs 10,000 per head. The colleges, however, have been barred from offering the existing seats to the paid category students. For having such students, the colleges will have to create additional seats. S.C. Jain College of Ambala has already allowed admission to students in B.Com (Part I) after accepting Rs 10,000 from each of them. When contacted, Mr C.L. Singla, Principal of the college, said they had introduced the system of having paid seats after obtaining the requisite permission from Kurukshetra University. The money taken from the students of this category would be spent for the development of the college, he said. Mr R.S. Chaudhary, Vice-Chancellor of Kurukshetra University, said it was decided to allow colleges to have paid seats in view of the rush of students seeking admission. |
