Blow to property owners
Chandigarh, November 27
In a major blow to city residents, UT Administrator Shivraj V Patil has turned down the proposal to convert leasehold residential and commercial properties into freehold. The move will affect the owners of nearly 50,000 leasehold properties, both residential and commercial, including 35,000 Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) flats, 2,000 commercial properties, 4,500 residential properties which come under the Estate Office and the CHB flats being constructed in Sector 63.

Hit by car near Lalru, two BPCL employees killed
Lalru, November 27
Two employees of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) were killed while another one sustained serious injuries when a speeding car hit them on the busy Ambala-Chandigarh highway near here early this morning.

Schools get creative to attract tiny tots

With admission to nursery classes round the corner, schools are going all out to attract tiny tots. Other than offering a comfortable travel in deluxe school buses, addressing the security concerns of parents is also being listed by several schools as their unique selling proposition (USP) this session. To justify their exorbitant admission fee, schools are providing GPS-enabled air-conditioned buses designed with fairytale characters. “You will travel by ‘Mickey Mouse’ this time and ‘Donald Duck’ in the next session if you get admission” is what the staff at some schools are seen telling children during pre-admission interactive sessions.

Man hacked to death
Zirakpur, November 27
A 32-year-old resident of Ramgarh Bhudda village was hacked to death by some residents of Singhpura village near here late last night. Lakhwinder Singh, alias Lakhi, owner of a welding workshop, was allegedly killed by his “friend” Satnam Singh, a resident of Singhpura village, and some of his accomplices due to old rivalry.

New Deputy Commissioner Vivek Atray addressed a press conference focussing on road safety. “Safety measures must be followed at any cost. I have seen people removing helmets and seat belts after they reach Panchkula. I will be coordinating with the Police Department to see that the residents wear seat belts and helmets while driving,” said Atray.

Deputy Commissioner Tejinder Pal Singh Sidhu has directed all officers to ensure that the name of the district is written as “Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar” and not “Ajitgarh” in all official correspondence. Tejinder Pal Singh Sidhu, who was presiding over a district-level road committee meeting here, also said roadside encroachments, which resulted in mishaps, would not be acceptable.

Dr Gautam is IOB chairman
Dr Gautam Munjal, a city-based orthodontist, has taken over as the chairman of the Indian Board of Orthodontics (IOB) at the recently concluded 49th Indian Orthodontic Conference in Kolkata. Dr Munjal is one of the few orthodontists in the country having earned the diplomate status in its first batch in 1999 and was elected the director of the Indian Board of Orthodontics in 2010, which is one of the eight boards in the world and the third one to be formed in India in 1999.

MC inks pact with BARC for setting up bio-gas plants in city

The Municipal Corporation today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai, for setting up two Nisargruna bio-gas plants based on biodegradable waste in Chandigarh. MC Joint Commissioner Rajiv Gupta signed the MoU with Dr Sharad P Kale, scientist of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai.

Chandigarh Carnival to kick off today

Over 200 take part in anti-obesity walkathon
Chandigarh, November 27
Around 200 people, including senior citizens, doctors, nurses and staff of Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mohali, participated in an anti-obesity walkathon. It was conducted in association with senior citizens of the tricity on World Anti-Obesity Day at Chandigarh Lake, Sector 42, here. The walk demonstrated the concept of “Flab is Bad” - ability of shedding lot of weight by walking. Application opposing bail of Inspector Rajesh Shukla adjourned
Chandigarh: The CBI court on Thursday adjourned the application opposing the bail of Inspector Rajesh Shukla to December 19.The complainant in the case of corruption against the suspended SHO of police station Sector 34, had moved an application to cancel his bail. The complainant, Lalit Joshi, a parking contractor, had alleged that the inspector was manipulating evidence and was misleading those concerned with the case. He also alleged that Shukla was using his influence against witnesses Joshi to withdraw the case. — TNS

Students of the National Institute of Nursing Education, PGIMER, Chandigarh, organised a health mela on ‘child care’ at Dadu Majra and Dhanas villages. Over 100 residents visited the health mela each at Dhanas and Daddu Majra villages. Nearly 170 parents registered for medical examination of their children. Different aspects of child care, including neonatal care, healthy breast feeding practices as well as prevention and management of malnutrition, diarrhoea, seizures and other childhood disorders, were discussed on the occasion. Nights in city colder than Shimla
Chandigarh, November 27
Nights in the city are colder than Shimla. There is a stark variation in the day and night temperature here. Also, mornings are expected to be foggy between 5 am and 6 am, according to the Met Department, Chandigarh. The minimum temperature recorded in Shimla today was 9.5 degree Celsius, while it turned out to be 8.7 degree Celsius in Chandigarh. The maximum temperature recorded today in the city, however, was 26 degree Celsius (one degree above normal) against that of 17.4 degree Celsius recorded during daytime in Shimla. The predictions for temperature are similar for the next three days with possibility of haze in the morning, according to the weatherman. TNS

PU students protest fee hike move
Chandigarh, November 27
A delegation of the Students for Society (SFS) submitted a memorandum against the move to hike tuition fee by 5 per cent for 2015-16 session. SFS has also initiated a signature campaign to protest the recent fee hike. Till now, more than 300 students have supported the campaign.

To facilitate work and bring efficiency, the boys hostel no. 6 at Panjab University has initiated the payment of hostel charges by debit and credit cards. Boys hostel no. 6 is the first hostel in the university to take the initiative. With this, the hostel inmates will be able to pay their hostel charges through a swipe facility.

30 armed youths vandalise petrol pump

A gang of over 30 unidentified armed youths from Ambala ransacked and vandalised a petrol pump on the Kalka-Ambala Highway in Sarseeni village today. The miscreants also decamped with cash worth Rs 25,000.

Hundreds of daily commuters, tourists and passengers remained stranded for hours due to traffic jam on the Pinjore-Nalagarh National Highway 21-A today. According to information, a truck rammed into a car from behind near Johluwal village of the Pinjore block.

The UT Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has directed XOLO mobile company with its service centre at Sector 32 and head office in Sector 64, Noida, to jointly pay Rs 5,000 as compensation for deficiency in services. The forum has also directed the company to refund Rs 10,600 as the cost of the faulty mobile set and pay Rs 3,500 as litigation costs.

Two get life term for murder
Mohali, November 27
A court here has awarded life term to two persons and imposed a fine on them for the murder of an employee of a factory. The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge (Senior Division) Parminder Pal Singh sentenced Surmukh Singh and Sunil Kumar to life term and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 each on them. In case they fail to pay the fine, they would have to undergo an imprisonment of another six months.

Bid to loot cash: Miscreant sets ATM on fire
Mohali, November 27
An ATM of the State Bank of Patiala was set on fire by a person at Mundi Kharar, near here, today. The miscreant had made an attempt to loot cash from the ATM. Manager of the bank branch Sunil Bansal said he got a call in the morning from a person whose house was located near the ATM stating that smell of smoke was coming from the area.
He said when he reached the spot, he found that lock clips of the shutter had been cut. On lifting it, he found the machine burning. The ATM had been badly damaged.

Truck driver held for hitting parked cars
Chandigarh, November 27
A truck driver was arrested for hitting the car of the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), UT, which was parked outside his house in Sector 7A, Chandigarh. CJM Anubhav Sharma alleged the driver of the truck (No.HR-46B-7566), Narinder Singh, a resident of New Delhi, hit his car and another car parked outside his house, on November 26. A case was registered at the Sector 26 police station .

Thieves strike at BJP leader’s house in Panchkula
Panchkula, November 27
Thieves struck at the house of a BJP leader in Sector 21 late last night. The house of Varinder Garg was vacant and the caretaker living on the ground floor was away to his native place. Garg said that electronic and sanitary items worth Rs 2 lakh had been stolen. Thieves struck at the first floor and not the ground floor.

30-yr-old man found dead
Panchkula, November 27
The body of a 30-year-old man was found at around 9.30 pm today. A shopkeeper of the area rang up the police after spotting the body lying in front of the deceased’s residence in Sector 26.

2 hurt as cars collide
Chandigarh, November 27
The occupants of two cars were injured after their vehicles collided at the sector 27/28 light point on Thursday night. According to the police, the incident took place around 10:15 pm when the two cars were crossing the red light at the light point. The impact of the collision was such that after being hit by the Indica, the Honda City overturned twice. Due to the collision, the drivers of both cars received injuries.  Meanwhile, the police rushed both the injured persons to the hospital. TNS

Delhi Dragons defeated Haryana Heroes by 5 wickets in a match of the ongoing Youth Premier League today. Riding high on a perfect unbeaten knock by Alimuddin (45 runs) and Rohit Hande (26 runs), Delhi Dragons managed to achieve Haryana Heroes’ total of 154 runs.
