3 die in accidents: Richhpal (32) died and Praveen, Jeet Ram, Anil and Ranjit were seriously injured when a speeding Bolero Jeep hit two motorcycles in Sriganganagar on Friday night. In another incident, two persons were killed as their jeep collided head-on with a truck near Purabsar on Hanumangarh highway.

Rs 1.3 crore liquor seized: The Rajasthan Police seized Indian made foreign liquor from two trucks at Loonkaransar on the Sriganganagar-Bikaner highway on Saturday. The police seized 3,253 cartons of liquor. Manohar Lal Bishnoi of Jaisalmer and Hukam Singh Rawat of Rajsamand have  been arrested.

Unpaid teachers protest: Teachers recruited under the Employment Guarantee Scheme (EGS), Special Training Resource Person Scheme (STR) and Alternative and Innovative Education (AIE) held a protest outside the DC's office here on Saturday. They were demanding the release of their salaries of the past four months.

2 youths killed in mishap: Two youths from Hisar were killed in an accident near Dasuya. The victims, Bantu and Kuldeep of Hisar in Haryana, died on the spot when an unidentified vehicle hit them.

Ludhiana

Play on social evils: The Ludhiana Sahodaya Schools Complex organised a short play competition at BCM School, Dugri. Plays such as “Durga Chali Gayi”, “Sarhadan hor vi Ne” and “Nasheyan Vich Galant Samaj” highlighted social evils. Greenland Senior Secondary School, Jalandhar Bypass, bagged the first prize while BCM Senior Secondary School, Chandigarh Road, won the second prize. The third prize went to Guru Nanak International Public School. 

Sangrur

2 held for murder: The Sangrur police on Saturday claimed to have cracked a blind murder case of 35-year-old migrant labourer Indresh from Uttar Pradesh. The victim's body was found on Friday at a deserted place on the Sangrur-Patiala road. The police have arrested Rajesh Kumar and Inderjit.

Rs 65,000 for flood victims: Students of SD Senior Secondary School, Ambala Cantt, on Saturday offered a cheque for Rs 65,000 to the Ambala Commissioner for the J&K flood victims. The cheque will be sent to the PM Relief Fund. Principal Ramesh Bansal said students did not burn crackers on Diwali and saved the amount.

Woman jumps off building: A 28-year-old woman jumped to death from the 15th floor of Medicity Hospital on Staurday soon after her mother died. Neha Gupta of Ghaziabad was pursuing her doctorate. Her mother was admitted here in the cardiology ward. She could not bear the shock.

Sec 144 in refinery complex: Deputy Commissioner Ajit Balaji Joshi imposed Section 144 of the CrPC in the Panipat Refinery complex in view of a proposed strike by workers' union and contractors.

Guv interacts with students: Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki on Saturday said the 21st century belonged to India because 65% of the country's population comprised youngsters below the age of 35. He was interacting with students of 20 schools in Seedhe Samvad programme at JP DAV Public School at Garhi Jhijhara in Gannaur. OC

Man killed in road mishap in Dalhousie: A person was killed and another injured when the truck they were travelling in skid off the road and landed in a roadside ditch near Belly on the Dalhousie-Pathankot highway, 10 km from here, on Saturday. A police report said the deceased had been identified as Jaswant Singh and the injured as Ramesh, driver of the truck. Both hailed from Pathankot. A case of rash and negligent driving against the truck driver had been registered at the Dalhousie police station, the report added. 

KANGRA

NIFT-Fashion Olympiad from Nov 21: The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) will hold a two-day regional inter-college competition, NIFT-Fashion Olympiad-14, from November 21 in the town. Kangra Director of NIFT Balasiddartha on Friday said NIFT was organising a national-level fashion Olympiad to raise awareness levels of fashion business and creativity among youth. The competition was open to all colleges. Professor Balasiddartha said the regional round of the NIFT Fashion Olympiad for Punjab, Chandigarh, Himachal, Uttarakhand and Jammu and Kashmir would be held here. The winners from the region would qualify for the national-level Olympiad to be held in New Delhi in February 2015. 

MANDI

Man killed as car falls into gorge in Mandi: A person, Vijay Kumar, was killed and five others, including two policemen, were injured when the car (HP-28A-2078) they were travelling in fell into a gorge at Banwar under the Sarkaghat police station here on Friday. The injured have been identified as Head Constable Prem Singh, Home Guard jawan Desh Raj, Rakesh Kumar, Mukesh Kumar and Chatar Singh. The accident took place when driver Desh Raj lost control on the vehicle. 

SUNDERNAGAR

Two arrested with charas in Sundernagar: The police recovered 550 gm of charas from the dashboard of a car and arrested two persons of Ballabhgarh (Haryana) at Pungh here on Saturday. A team of policemen on duty at Pungh stopped the car and on checking found the charas. The car was being driven by one of the accused. The police have registered a case under Section 20 of the NDPS Act against Satish Kumar and Ravinder. The car was also taken into possession by the police.

Loss to treasury: The government treasury and local businessmen are losing over Rs 8 crore daily after November 1 as the mining work at river Gaula could not be started yet due to a controversy on some issues between forest corporation and district administration. “The work of mining of sub minerals from river Gaula, which normally begins on November 1 for the next six months, could not be started this year as the officers from both the departments were delaying work,” said Prem Belwal, a social worker based in Haldwani. According to the social worker, over 70,000 workers from across the country have reached Haldwani to get jobs in mining work.

Nainital

Work overload: Returning to work after more than 50 days' strike, the ministerial employees are now braving piles of files which are waiting to be cleared for the last 50 days. According to employees, though they have gave joining letter on November 5, they could resume work only on Friday as one holiday fell inbetween. “It will take more than 10 days time to dispose off the pending files,'' said KK Joshi, district president of ministerial employees association.

Student leader booked: Only four days after students union elections were over in Almora College, the police today registered a case against the newly elected students union secretary for extorting money from shopkeepers in the town. “ We have registered a case against newly elected students’ union secretary Ravi Kumar and 8 of his colleagues after the shopkeepers at new Sabji Mandi complained that these student leaders tried to extort money from them and threatened them with dire consequences on not paying the sum,” said PL Verma, police inspector at the local police thana.

Sitarganj

Farmers' protest: Farmers from three villages in US Nagar district today protested before the office of the SDM demanding compensation for their land which has been taken over for the expansion of a motor road. The farmers said that due to no notice having been given to them by the concerned authorities, they had sown wheat crop on the said land, which is being destroyed for the road work now. “Besides losing thousands of rupees for the cost of seeds and other expenditure, we will become landless forever,'' said Amarjit Singh Mahar, an affected farmer.
