Bhuntar airport runway extension on the cards
Shimla, November 8 With the value of this land in Kullu being very high, the cost of acquisition may cross over ~500 crore. As such the government is seriously considering the relatively less expensive proposition of constructing an over-bridge to extend the runway for enabling landing of bigger aircrafts. Vijai Singh Mankotia, vice-chairman, State Tourism Board, said: “Experts have suggested to construct an over-bridge by erecting 68 pillars, and to reduce the threat from Beas water huge walls can be constructed. We are planning to go ahead with
this proposal.” He said the team from IIT Roorkee and the AAI had visited the spot and given its report, adding that the government would soon decide on the construction of the over-bridge. Mankotia said the proposal to divert the river could be too expensive so constructing an over-bridge would be more feasible. He said: “Even if the river has to be diverted, very little land will have to be acquired as the over-bridge will serve the purpose at a relatively cheap cost. With Deccan Airways expressing its willingness to operate flights from Shimla, Kullu and Dharamsala to Delhi and Chandigarh, Himachal will have to ensure that the infrastructure and facilities at the three airports are proper. While flights are operating from Gaggal in Kangra, they have been very erratic from Kullu and non-functional from Shimla for the past two years.” While
Rs 142.70 crore had been approved for undertaking repairs of the sunken 300-ft runway at Jubbarhatti airport, plans were afoot to extend the runway at Gaggal in Kangra as well, he said. This would enable landing of wide-bodied aircrafts and thus bringing the air fare down, he added. Bottlenecks
