Family elated at reunion with son in city
Jalandhar, October 22
The child was restored to the family by the Commissionerate Police after being recovered from Aligarh in UP. The police managed to trace the location of the child through mails and phone calls being made to the family for seeking Rs 15 lakh ransom for the child’s release for the past four days, a revelation which was made by the police today. Commissioner of Police Yurinder Singh Hayre said even as his team suspected the involvement of 10 to 15 persons in the episode, three of the main masterminds had been arrested in the case. One of the main accused, Mahinder Gupta, a resident of Ishar Colony here, is a commerce graduate and had been working with a private bank earlier. He is currently out of job, married and himself has a seven-year-old child. Gupta, reportedly got into contact with two other arrested accused Suresh and Sanjiv, both from UP and residing at Basti Danishmandan here and planned the kidnapping. Hayre said Gupta had been visiting Rainbow Park, where he found Gopi an easy target owing to his extreme addiction to cellphone games. He tried to be friendly with him till finally committing the crime on October 12. The CP said the Alto car in which the child was kidnapped belonged to Gupta, but was yet to be recovered. Kidnappers sent mail
ID via courier
From there on the child was kept in Jalandhar for some days before being taken to Chintpurni and finally on a bus to Aligarh. The Commissioner said the kidnappers did not make any contact with the family. We were completely clueless till the family received a courier four days ago, with just a paper inside mentioning that they should contact him on the given email ID. They had been demanding Rs 15 lakh ransom for the release of the child and said that they would kill him if the money was not released. Phone calls also followed and we traced them to Aligarh, Hayre said. The CP said he sent his team under ACP Tejvir Singh to Aligarh in plainclothes and they managed to locate the whereabouts of the child and the gangsters. “We immediately sent more force under DCP Naveen Singla who even got the deployment done at bus stand and railway station so that they do not sneak away with the child.” The CP said a police party at the railway station there had been looking for a boy with his hair tied on his head. “But the kidnappers had got his hair cut owing to which there was some confusion and we just managed to recover the child, but we failed to lay hand on more gangsters in the group,” he said. Cheerful cherub
Even just after a few hours of his safe return, the cheerful cherub did not show any signs of trauma which normally anyone his age would have suffered had he been away from his family for 11 long days. He kept beaming all the time, hugging and kissing his parents and responding to all poses which the mediapersons kept telling him to make. DCP Naveen Singla said even as the child was being brought back, he had his eye on his cellphone. “He asked me for my phone and kept playing game on it for quite sometime,” he said hinting at the level of his addiction. |

Go green this Diwali, save nature
Jalandhar, October 22 In the city also, various Non Governmental Organizations (NGO) are working with the district administration to make the people aware about the harms of celebrating Diwali in a boisterous way. "All manmade things come from nature. Excessive consumption leads to their depletion. For example, the gold jewellery that we will buy on this Diwali is coming from a gold mine that is not only depleting the natural resources but in the process of mining is probably ruining many ecosystems," said S. Kapoor of Chitra NGO. However he feels that although the administration has taken some efforts to make the children aware of the harms of bursting crackers, it failed to inform the public on the harms of excessive consumerism," said Kapoor. He also informed that after getting lured by the excessive advertisement and hoardings that scream out to people offering sales extravaganza, bargains and discounts encourage them to buy even after few days of the festival. Also, the tradition of burning earthen lamps seems to have lost somewhere and instead asthetic lights coming from China and Korea have taken their places. People are nowadays using them excessively to adorn their houses, business establishments, monuments and even roads. This is actually contributing a lot to the global warming. "Instead of the electric lights, we should use more of earthen diyas and lamps. Although, their duration may be short but it will infact reduce lot of pressure on the nature," said Nandita, a student of Appejay Fine Arts College. Nevertheless, due to excessive use of bursting of crackers, the festival has turned from the explosion of joy to the explosion of pollution. "The toxic substances used in the firecrackers are very harmful to health of all living beings. Not only to children and ailing people, it also causes serious health disorders amongst birds and animals," said Surinder Saini of Jalandhar Welfare Society. He informed that since most of the fire cracker companies employ children to manufacture these, people should refrain from using them on Diwali. — TNS |
