Firemen set for Diwali exigencies
Jalandhar, October 21 According to Surjit Singh, District Fire Safety officer, “We have conducted mock exercises to assess the response time and have positioned fire tenders in six places from where we can tackle any fire exigency in the shortest possible time.” He said the tenders would be placed at Chowk Sudan, Babrik Chowk, Industrial area, Basti Adda near Old GT Road, Police lines road and in their headquarters opposite old jail. The department has also set up an emergency response centre where it would also provide precautionary and first aid tips. The department is keeping a strict vigil on various hotels and Cinema Complexes during this time. “Most of the hotels have so far not installed adequate fire safety system on their premises. It is posing a serious threat to the people who would be going to these hotels these days,” said Rajinder Sharma, sub fire officer. He said despite several reminders, hotel managements do not allow them to enter inside the premises for the annual inspection. “Whenever we ask them for the no objection certificate (NOC), they send us some old paper signed 15 to 20 years ago. In the absence of the implementation of the Fire Safety Act in the state, we do not have any power to issue challans to them,” said Sharma. |

PTU learning centre body seeks VC’s resignation
Jalandhar, October 21 Holding banners against the VC, they took out a march in the city before burning his effigy in front of his house on Cool Road here. The association members even put up a banner against the VC on the gates of his residence. Putting up tents right in front of his house, the members even began an indefinite protest against him on the matter. The association members linked the VC in an alleged corruption case along with his friend Parveen Kumar to whom, they said, he had transferred an amount to the tune of crores of rupees. They alleged that the NC had misappropriated an amount of more than Rs 50 crore. Owners of learning centres said they used to get Rs 4,500 to Rs 5,000 per semester as fee share, over which they were now being forced to accept only Rs 2,600 per semester. The rest of the money, they alleged, was going to Parveen Kumar, regarding which they wanted a free and fair vigilance inquiry. Hardeep Singh Bagga, president, said the VC was not concerned about the fate of students and was busy shielding his misdeeds. He said more than 40,000 students of the 2012 batch had not got approval due to negligence of the PTU authorities. He said the dharna would continue till October 31 after which it would be further intensified. The VC was stated to be out of state. The university authorities refused to make an official comment on the matter. Insiders, however, termed the protest to be politically motivated, targeting the VC at the time when his extension was around the corner. Dr Arora’s extension would be due on December 24. |

Panchayat Union stages massive protest
Jalandhar, October 21 The rally caused a huge jam at the PAP Chowk. It became even difficult for the traffic police to manage the flow of traffic even after the protest ended. It was a chaotic situation where the people were seen struggling to commute. The Joint Action Committee included the sarpanch, panch, panchayat officers and junior engineers besides the panchayat secretaries of Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur and Kapurthala districts. Addressing the gathering, convener of the union Prem Sing Molvi said by handing over the contract for the panchyat audit to private hands, the Punjab government is planning to sideline the panchayats and curtail their powers. He said it is the panchayats that form the grassroot level of democracy. He said the decision will lead to corruption in the working of the panchayats. As per the same decision, the company will charge Rs 5,000 for every audit amounting to Rs 10 lakh. The fee will be increased as per the audit for the extended amount. Prem Singh said the private company will earn crores of rupees every year. As per the decision, the elected members of the panchayat will not have any right to challenge or complaint against the company. He said the panchayats have been asking for more rights. Instead of providing it, the departments, including anganwari, pension, health, birth and death registration, animal dispensary and primary education, have been taken back from the jurisdiction of the panchayats that has crippled the system. |

Transport Ministry urged to forbid refurbished buses from plying on roads
Jalandhar, October 21 After his suggestions were sought before the tabling of the Bill in Parliament, Soi urged the Ministry of Transport to lay more emphasis on the condemned vehicle policy. "After I went through the Bill, I found some shortcomings in the policy. The Bill was silent about the expired vehicles. I have urged the Transport Ministry to incorporate strict provision forbidding the use of condemned vehicles on road," Soi said. He emphasised that the refurbished school buses Soi said he would also meet Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari and raise the issue with the ministry. "The school bus involved in an accident in which 14 children from two Nakodar villages had lost their lives on March 4, 2013 was also refurbished. During the inquiries, it was found that the bus had been assembled and refurbished. Had this bus not been assembled from parts of a condemned bus, the students inside the bus could have got away with less serious injuries," Soi added. The school bus has a lot of problems - tyres were withered, chassis was in poor condition and it collided head-on with a truck which was carrying a consignment of 5,000 bricks. Thus the impact was big. The bus didn't even have the yellow paint needed as per the Supreme Court guidelines. The speed of the bus was 80 kmph and there were no seat belts. The driver didn't have the licence and drugs were found in the bus. Dr Soi has been fighting for the cause of road safety for the last 16 years. It was Dr Soi who called road accidents as murder when he first wrote to the Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court regarding the deaths in accidents taking place on the roads of Punjab. He, however, said that all these policies and Bills would not serve any purpose until the enforcement agency laid emphasis on enforcement of traffic laws. |
