Traffic cop caught taking bribe
Chandigarh, September 9

MC plans steps to check theft of streetlight poles
Chandigarh, September 9
Thieves are giving sleepless nights to the Municipal Corporation (MC) authorities with streetlight poles, wires and high mast lights being stolen from different parts of the city. In a bid to encounter the problem, the civic body is now planning to replace electricity poles with concrete ones on isolated city roads and connect poles with overhead wires to check the thefts.

Residents to have say in solar power tariff
Chandigarh, September 9
City residents will have a say in deciding the solar power tariff. To determine the tariff, the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) will hold a public hearing session on September 22. The Chandigarh Renewable Energy Science and Technology Promotion Society (CREST) will sell solar power to the UT Electricity Department on the basis of that tariff.

Expect scattered rain for 3 days

Rain is likely to continue in isolated areas in the city for the next three days. The overall temperature will remain low. According to the weatherman, the effect of western disturbances will be seen till September 13 and rainfall will be scanty after that.

Hooda govt’s bid to woo state’s young achievers boomerangs
Panchkula, September 9
Haryana CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda enjoys tea and refreshments with awardees after the Haryana Pratibha Samman Samaroh in Panchkula on Tuesday. The Haryana government’s strategy to woo young achievers, who cleared various entrance examinations including the civil services from the state, boomeranged when the awardees alleged the distribution of cash rewards during a ceremony held here today was not on merit and had been done in haste.

Tribune employees donate blood on the 116th death anniversary of The Tribune Trust founder, Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, in Chandigarh on Tuesday. The Trust president, Justice SS Sodhi (retd) (centre), his wife Bonny Sodhi, and (from left) Principal of Tribune Model School Vandana Saxena, Editor-in-Chief Raj Chengappa, Punjabi Tribune Editor Varinder Walia, General Manager Vinay Verma and Tribune Employees Union president Anil Gupta (second from right) were present on the occasion. More than 100 employees of The Tribune donated blood at a camp organised on the occasion of the 116th death anniversary of the founder of the Tribune Trust, Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia. The camp was organised by the Tribune Employees Union on the office premises here today. Justice SS Sodhi, president of the Tribune Trust, inaugurated the camp and said there was no activity more meaningful and noble than blood donation.

Three cars damaged in Sector 32
Chandigarh, September 9
Unidentified assailants damaged three cars in Sector 32 on Monday night. Miscreants used bricks, iron rods and sticks for damaging the vehicles and two cars were damaged minutes after when a police party left the spot around 12.45 am.

OSD asked to appear before CBI
Chandigarh, September 9
As part of the ongoing investigations by the Central Bureau of Investigations (CBI) into the alleged favour given to M/s Selvel Media Pvt Ltd in the allotment of tenders for the maintenance of 86 public toilets and displaying advertisements on these between 2007 and 2012 by the municipal corporation (MC), the CBI has asked the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to the Joint Commissioner to appear before the investigating agency.

New abattoir for Mohali

The Mohali Municipal Corporation has planned to set up a modern abattoir in the Phase I, Industrial Area, to ensure the scientific and hygienic slaughtering of animals.

‘Duplicate’ omnipaque
Panel recommends another probe

Four months after the PGIMER authorities received a complaint, against a campus-based chemist, alleging supply of a “duplicate” omnipaque, the inquiry committee —while approving fault in the omnipaque — recommended that a further inquiry be conducted by the UT drug controller.

A seminar on ‘Contentious Issues Under Companies Act 2013’ was held with an aim at finding practical solutions and answer to frequently ask questions (FAQs), regarding filing of returns and various forms under the Companies Act, 2013. Welcoming the members, Uma Kant Mehta, chairman, Chandigarh branch, highlighted the need for continuous and detailed study as the New Companies Act, 2013, has very strict provisions for auditors too.

Long waiting list for hostels
PUSU members hold protest

PUSU workers hold a protest outside the Vice-Chancellor's office at Panjab University on Tuesday. Representatives of the Panjab University Student Union (PUSU) today held a protest demanding permission for allowing facility of hostel rooms on guest basis. The facility was recently discontinued. The students were earlier allowed to stay in hostels by paying per day charges.

5,000 new teachers by Sept 30, says minister

As many as 5,000 new teachers will be given appointment letters by September 30, Education Minister Daljit Singh Cheema said here today.

Experts dwell on climate change

The Panjab University-based student group, “Emerging Youth Blood Donor Organisation” (EYBDO), on Tuesday launched a helpline, “Dare 4 Fear”, for safety of women in the tricity. 2 convicted of murder

The court of District and Sessions Judge SK Aggarwal today convicted two persons in a murder case. The court convicted Jagpal and Rakesh in a case of murder. The quantum of sentence will be pronounced on September 11.

Plots in Mauli Jagran
HC sets two-month deadline
Chandigarh, September 9
The Punjab and Haryana High Court has set a two-month deadline for the Chandigarh Administration and its functionaries to hold an inquiry for finding out whether plots under occupation of some private persons in Mauli Jagran are a part of the gram panchayat land. A Division Bench has also directed both the Administration and the plot holders to maintain status-quo till the inquiry is held.

Shopkeeper booked for obstructing public servant

Mohali: The police have booked a shopkeeper and his helper for deterring a public servant from discharging his duty and hurting his religious sentiments. The case was registered on the complaint of Kesar Singh, who was in charge of an anti-encroachment team of the Municipal Corporation. Kesar Singh had alleged that when he was heading the drive at the Phase IX market, a shopkeeper misbehaved with him and his team and also hurt his religious feelings. The case has been registered under Sections 353, 186, 295, 506 and 34 of the IPC.

Robbery in Sec 44
Sketch of accused released

More than a week after a robber entered the house of a teacher at Sector 44 at midnight and tried to molest her, the police today released the sketch of the suspect.

Punjab lift Dhruv Pandove Trophy

Unseeded CHART trainee Naresh Badgujar returns a shot during the St Stephen’s School AITA Championship Series Tournament at the CLTA tennis courts in Sector 10. Unseeded qualifier CHART trainee Naresh Badgujar upset fourth seed Ishaan Sethi to move into quarterfinals of the St Stephen’s School AITA Championship Series Tournament today.
After losing the first set 2-4, Naresh came back strongly to win the next set 4-1 and decider tie-breaker by conceding only one point. In the next match he will be facing his practice partner, CHART trainee, Shashikant Rajput who defeated CLTA trainee Aishwarya Goel 4-1, 4-2.
