Of sweat & sparkle
Girls may be dying to work with Ashley Rebello for his long association with Salman Khan. But if his words are anything to go by, it's not an easy job to style stars

Salman Khan in Kick
Salman Khan in Kick

It is a little hard to reserve glamour for the edges when the job description starts with all things fashion and style. Perhaps, it is cool to refer to the sweat that goes behind the sparkle. Nevertheless, Ashley Rebello makes it a point to detag all the imagery often associated with being a B-town stylist. "It is not glamorous, you should see us during our everyday work conditions. All the designers are in jeans and all sweaty in their workshops," he doesn't mind giving a reality check, while, in Chandigarh for a workshop at INIFD. He laughs, "And all the girls want to work with me because of Salman Khan. That is when I tell them it is a lot of work." While we would just make do with a couple of questions about Salman Khan. The questions that he is more than qualified to take, having dressed the star in films like Jai Ho, Ek Tha Tiger, Dabangg, Bodyguard, Kick to even the upcoming Bigg Boss 8.

"Salman Khan looks good in whatever he wears, so that makes my job very easy. Plus, he's a wonderful human being and I love working with him." He laughs, "The only tricky part about styling him is that his weight fluctuates a lot. So, we have to have a tailor ready 24/7."

Then and now

While over the years fashion evolved and the profession became an industry, a couple of things remained the same. The struggle of the initial years now replaces the drive to excel and better each time. "I worked 24x7 and never had the time to visit a coffee shop. I don't know how students these days have all the time to hang around. Even when I went to New York to study, we were just 10 students and it was so competitive."

That also includes the platform that has a lot of scope for styling. Yet another contrast from the days he did his first film back in the nineties. "The first film I did was Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikander and I got Rs 50,000 for it."

Mirror, mirror on the wall…

From the time when Bollywood discounted any need for a fashion reference and made blunders in the name of costumes, we have come a long way. Well dressed actors don't come few and far between. "Apart form the fact that Salman is wonderful and I work with him, I quite like Saif Ali Khan's style. Then there's Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor, who spell class with their clothes."

Constructive criticism closely follows compliments. There are always people in abundance falling on either side of the graph. "Parineeti Chopra needs to work on herself a little. She wears things that don't suit her, so I would be looking forward to dressing her as well." Apart from the man who calls the shot in the nation. "I would really like to dress up Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a way that keeps his style intact. I would keep all the linens and band galas intact but make it a little more edgy for him."

Comfort is the key

Amidst a string of upcoming projects that include a Marathi film and Prem Rattan Dhan Payo, Dolly Ki Doli, Bajrangi Bhaijaan starring Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor, there's been no Punjabi film after Zindagi Khoobsurat Hai. "I do not have the time right now. I am meeting a couple of producers…While I haven't seen any Punjabi films, I liked this song which has Jimmy Shergill and Neeru Bajwa."

There's no getting away without answering the inevitable in looking good. He keeps things as simple as, "I like comfort and simplicity. I want everybody to walk into my store because we have things priced at as affordable as Rs 4,000… Comfort is one of the key factors to being stylish." Some of the things that everybody knows yet several ignore.

Don’t get sidetracked by the tagline, Bollywood film Khota Sikka is supposedly a family film
Jasmine Singh

Sometimes, the answer lies in a name, and sometimes, it is the same name that could keep you guessing. Bollywood film Khota Sikka, starring Hemant Pandey, Aatri Kumar and Nilufer Salehi, has an interesting tag-line that could leave you debating over it for hours. But amidst all these you wouldn't mind some dope on it.

The cast and crew have spent almost a year shooting it, which finally releases on September 12 across India. Says Hemant, whom we have seen in Office Office and other comedy films, "We have spent a lot of time on the film, hoping it will be liked. The film is a wholesome entertainment. We are also announcing our next film today. This is the best time to do this.”

But the buck seems to stop at the tagline 'Size doesn't matter."

"It just goes with the storyline where a boy falls in love with a tall girl," he adds looking at Nilufer, who smiles at the mention.

"When I came for the auditions and met the actor of the film, I was sure I wouldn't be doing this film. But when I read the script, and the role, I was all for it," she smiles.

Aatri Kumar opens the conversation by calling Khota Sikka a family film. "It is meant for everybody in the family," he says obviously inviting a debate on it. "The film is contrary to the tagline. For an audience who will come to see the film because of the title will be surprised to see such a family film," he adds.

Produced by Manoj Bhardwaj, Pawan Raj Khokhar and Naveen Kumar, the movie also stars Rakesh Bedi and Sushmita Mukherjee. The other artistes include, Vijay Kashyap, Sumit Arora, Samrath Chaturvedi, Richa Verma, Shikha Tiwari, Preeta Jain, Abhishek Khanna, Riddhi Bansal, Dyuti Geete, Nishikant Dixit, Aditya Sharma and Zubien Khan, among others. The story is written by Raj Inder Singh and the music is composed by Uddhav, who has also given his voice. The other songs are sung by Mika Singh, Shaan, Sunidhi Chauhan and Pamela Jain. Ram Pratap Singh has directed the film, which releases on September 12.

I hope to kill girl-next-door image: Parineeti

Actress Parineeti Chopra feels perturbed when people refer to her as the quintessential 'girl-next-door' of Bollywood. She hopes that with her forthcoming films Kill Dil and Daawat-e-Ishq, she will be able to break that stereotype. In an interview, Parineeti has shared insights about working in Kill Dil, on being stereotyped as the 'bindaas bubbly' girl and dating rumours.

What's it like working with Shaad Ali in Kill Dil?

I think I am in awe of Shaad. When I got the offer, I was happy I was going to work with the director of Saathiya and Bunty Aur Babli. But now that I've got to work closely with him, my love and respect for the person that he is, has touched sky-high. He is a joy to work with. No matter how much the stress on the sets, he's always in a good mood. When a director is not temperamental, then the actor looks forward to going to the sets every day. For us actors in Kill Dil—Ranveer Singh, Govinda and me, Shaad is not just a fantastic director but also a friend. When we finished shooting we partied together.

Ranveer and Shaad are close friends. So were you the outsider in the beginning?

Oh yes, for sure! I already shared an equation with Ranveer. I used to manage his career when I was working for Yash Raj Films. He was also my first co-star. But I didn't know Shaad at all. But within five minutes of meeting him, the ice was broken. It's not difficult to get along with Shaad.

He's an introvert and you're an extrovert?

Shaad is not an introvert! He talks a lot. He is constantly joking and laughing.

Then why this perception?

Maybe some people think just playing loud characters makes me Punjabi. But if you think about it, the girl I played in Hasee To Phansee was very different from the girl in Ishaqzaade. I hope Daawat-e-Ishq and Kill Dil kill that image.

So after Rani Mukerji are you the new 'Babli' in Shaad's cinema?

Ha ha. I hope not. I am not at all the bindaas bubbly type in Shaad's film. I am very different in Kill Dil from the way I am seen in my other films. That's what we all from the Kill Dil team believe. So, far I haven't done anything that's glamorous, be it Shuddh Desi Romance or Hasee Toh Phansee, I've so far pretty much played the normal working class girl.

I think slotting you as the girl next door belittles your versatility?

That's what I feel too. Whenever I am asked this, I've to spend half an hour explaining why I feel I don't need to be slotted as the girl-next-door. Like when I am asked, 'Oh, you excel at playing the loud Punjabi girl'. The funny thing is, I've only played Punjabi in my first four films released so far. I was not Punjabi in Ishaqzaade or the subsequent films.

You seem to have worked with all the younger actors. Now do you look forward to working with the Khans and Kumar?

I am doing a film with Saif (Ali Khan). I am very excited. I don't plan too far in the future.

What about a boyfriend. One never hears of you being linked with anyone?

Oh, there is one link-up, with Maneesh Sharma. there. That rumour never goes, maybe because I spend a lot of time with him, even go out with him. Over here if you are seen with the same man more than once, you're presumed to be involved with him. But the truth is that I haven't really found a person to be in a relationship with. — IANS

Nawazuddin’s Farzi signature

After the success of Kick, Nawazuddin Siddiqui will star in Farzi, co-starring Shahid Kapoor. Confirming the news, Nawaz says, "Yes, I have signed Farzi with the very talented Krishna DK and Raj Nidimoru, as their body of work proves beyond doubt their capabilities." Well, it's nice to see that Nawaz is now diversifying and exploring newer genres.

Priyanka all the way

Mary Kom is a good movie but it could have been a better movie. One reason to watch the movie, hands down, is Priyanka Chopa's nuanced and gritty performance. She is brilliant and effortlessly switches from daughter to girl to boxer to wife to mother as Mary Kom. Her hard work deserves an applause. The brand placements are shameless and jarring. The end is rather abrupt. Some scenes showing Mary's struggles are quite touching and rooting for her comes naturally.

Bald decision

Ranveer Singh begins shooting for Bajirao Mastani in October and will go bald for the role. He has to wrap up prior endorsement commitments and shooting for Dil Dhadakne Do and Kill Dil before he goes bald. He will also promote Kill Dil in November.

Poor choice of word?

Deepika Padukone has slammed the censorship which objected to the word 'virgin' in her movie Finding Fanny. She finds the Censor Board to be inconsistent in the way they view and judge movies and does not agree with the judgment. She says the context of the use of language has to be taken into consideration.

Divine blessings

Rani Mukerji visited the famous Shreemant Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati temple in Pune to offer gratitude for all the blessings that have come her way and to participate in the aarti and be blessed. Take a look.

Meet the Chugal Mughals!

Leading ladies of the show Jodha Akbar
friendship zone: Leading ladies of the show Jodha Akbar

Round-the-clock shooting schedules and a rather long distance from Mumbai take their toll on the actors who are a part of Zee TV's historical magnum opus Jodha Akbar. However, the one thing that keeps them going is the bonding and the fun they have as a team on the sets.

Creating a Whatsapp group by the name of Chugal Mughals (gossip queens), the girls on the show have found a new way to stay connected and have fun. Keeping all the men out consciously, the girls are tight-lipped about all the talks that happen on the group. The camaraderie between Paridhi Sharma, Lavina Tandon and four other female co-actors on the sets is such that the six of them always manage to find a lighter moment or a private joke to chuckle over even on the most hectic days.

Being the notorious one in the group, Lavina, aka Rukaiya Begum, is the 'admin' of the group and ensures that she keeps the girls entertained at all times. Staying away from family due to their work, these girls have managed to make a family away from their families.

Talking about the group and all the fun these girls have on the sets, Jodha Begum aka Paridhi Sharma said, "We are a fun bunch of girls and it's really nice that I've found like-minded people on the set. We actors shoot in trying situations, with little access to our loved ones and miss little things like having your family around during your meal time. The six of us make it a point to have lunch together and in fact ensure that the entire cast shares their meals. There are times when we are shooting for intense episodes and just one look at these mischievous girls makes me crack up and lighten the mood in general. I love these girls to bits and hope that we stay the way we are — a mad bunch!"

Do not miss Jodha Akbar, Monday to Friday at 8:00 pm only on Zee TV.

This was my second visit to the Ajmer Dargah and I feel rejuvenated."

While Nikitin is best remembered for featuring as Thangabali in Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Chennai Express, Kratika is known for her roles in TV shows like Jhansi Ki Rani and Punar Vivah.
