Rain pours misery on city again
Ludhiana, August 2
The rain that had lashed the city for an hour today threw life out of gear once again. Within an hour, the roads and the streets were deluged.

Illegal change of land use
ATPs told to report within 15 days
Ludhiana, August 2
On the directions of Additional Commissioner (R) Rishipal Singh, demi-official (DO) letters have been issued to two Assistant Town Planners (ATPs). They have been asked to report within 15 days what action did the Municipal Corporation take against persons who have started commercial activities in various housing schemes of the government without taking permission for change of land use.

Assault victim kills himself 
Ludhiana, August 2
A 54-year-old person allegedly committed suicide in the Basti Jodhewal area. The deceased has been identified as Sarabjit Singh, a resident of Bharpur Nagar. He was a factory worker.

Delay in delivery of number plates
DTOs asked to pull up contractors
Ludhiana, August 2
The applicants for high security number plates at the District Transport Office, Ludhiana, were relieved as Anurag Aggarwal, Principal Secretary, Transport, ordered all the District Transport Officers to pull up the contractors for the delay in installing the plates.

100 items cleared at F&CC meeting

Police pick holes in statement given by victim

There is no headway in the acid attack case where a 30-year-old man was attacked with acid two days ago. The police suspect the victim is hiding something.

Saharanpur riots
Attacks stage-managed: MP 
Ludhiana, August 2
HS Phoolka, senior advocate, Supreme Court of India, who has been handling cases pertaining to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, and Harinder Singh Khalsa, MP from Fatehgarh Sahib, Punjab, visited the affected areas of Saharanpur. They interacted with victims whose shops and other commercial establishments were destroyed in the riots. They also interacted with members of Sikh and Muslim communities. Hindu organisations called for peace and harmony.

Environmental degradation raises concern 
Jagraon, August 2
Environmentalist Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal feels that it is the modern lifestyle and casual approach of the new generation that has led to environmental degradation. Seechewal said the level of soil, water and air pollution had assumed alarming proportions. Stressing the need of conserving environment from pollution, Seechewal said it was the duty of every individual to protect environment from further degradation by planting more and more saplings. “A majority of the people, particularly youngsters, are still not serious about preserving the environment,” he said.

Health officials survey 896 houses

Civil Surgeon Dr Subhash Batta, Dr Anil Verma, District Epidemiologist, along with five health teams, surveyed 896 houses, covering a population of 4,314 in Ranjit Nagar, Muslim Colony, Fauzi Colony, Deep Nagar Sherpur and Shiv Colony, Dhandari Khurd.
