Assault on driver by cops
Mohali SSP marks inquiry into case

Taking serious note of a complaint filed by a driver with a Panchkula-based company against an assistant sub-inspector (ASI), Mohali SSP has marked an inquiry to Dera Bassi Superintendent of Police.

Mohali SSP Inder Mohan Singh Bhatti has asked Dera Bassi SP Anil Sharma to investigate the matter and submit him a report.

In his complaint to the SSP, Surinder Kumar alleged that ASI Harpal Singh, posted at Dera Bassi, assaulted and detained him. He said the police official threatened to implicate him.

The incident took place on June 22. He said a car that was in front was not letting him overtake as the driver was busy on phone. After he overtook the vehicle, the latter gave him a chase. As they reached near Dera Bassi police station, the olice officials signaled him to stop at a naka. After he stopped, the driver of the Swift car pulled him out of his vehicle and started thrashing him.

“Later, I learnt that the driver of the Swift car was ASI Harpal Singh,” claimed Kumar. The officials then took him to the police station detained him illegally, gave a sound beating and threatened to frame him in a drug peddling case, Kumar alleged. The police officials forced him to sign an apology letter and then let him off, the complainant stated.

‘Kidnappers’ open fire on being chased by villagers

Residents of Behlolpur village nabbed one of the three alleged kidnappers who were taking away an unidentified girl in a car late this night. The residents, who claimed to have handed over the suspect to the police at Balongi, alleged the trio opened fire at them after being trapped in their car after a chase.

The residents said the other two youngsters managed to take away the girl after firing the shots.

Although the Mohali police denied the kidnapping and firing incident, they said a case was being registered in this connection.

“Some residents, who claimed to have chased the suspects, are in an inebriated condition. Although, we will be verifying all facts later, we have sounded an alert in the area to nab other suspects,” said a policeman.

Meanwhile, village sarpanch Harbhajan Singh accompanied by several other residents reached the police station. Some residents claimed they were standing on a village road, when they saw a girl raising the alarm in a moving car. As some of them started chasing the car in their vehicles, the alleged kidnappers got trapped near the Green Enclave, a residential complex near Daun village.

Chandigarh, August 2
During a special drive launched ahead of the Independence Day, a team from the police crime branch, headed by ASI Kuldeep Singh, arrested a man with 40 gram of charas.

The police said Keshav, a resident of Sector 37, who was coming from the ISBT-43, was stopped for checking near the Sector 42/43 roundabout. He was found carrying the narcotic. The accused was arrested and a case under the NDPS Act was registered against him at the Sector 36 police station. During interrogation, it was established that the accused used to procure drugs from Amritsar and deliver it in Chandigarh.

Man held under Arms Act

While patrolling near Sanatan Dharam Mandir, Sector 23, Chandigarh, a team of the crime branch, headed by SI Tarsem Singh, apprehended Navitan Pal, alias Tony, of Sector 37, and recovered a country-made .32 bore pistol, along with two live cartridges, from his possession. During interrogation, he disclosed that he got the pistol from Meerut, UP. A case under the Arms Act has been registered at the Sector 17 police station.

Both the accused will be produced in the court tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the police today held a drive to check antecedents of residents at a colony in Sector 25.

PG house owner booked, released on bail

The Chandigarh Police registered a case against a Sector 8 resident for running paying guest accommodation without permission.

Narinder Sharma has been booked for disobedience to order duly promulgated by a public servant under Section 188 of the IPC at the Sector 3 police station. He was arrested and released on bail later.

The police carried out checks in the wake of the Independence Day and found that students were staying as paying guests, the information of which was not provided to the police.

Man held for thefts

The police have arrested, Baldev Singh, a resident of Sector 41-B here, on the charge of theft.

Parbhakar Chaurashia and Gorakh Nath of Sector 56 reported that Baldev Singh, a resident of Sector 41-B, along with another person, stole a purse containing a silver bracelet and some coins and cash amounting to Rs 2,300 on Friday.

The accused also committed the crime in another house from where a purse, a mobile phone and Rs 40,000 in cash were stolen.

Girl’s body found

The body of an unidentified girl was found near the railway crossing at Durali village, Kharar, today.

The Government Railway Police have registered a case of murder. As per GRP officials, the victim’s limbs were tied together. Further, she was tied to the railway track with a duppata. “We suspect that the girl (around 22 years of age) was placed on the railway track in an unconscious state and during night hours so that she is run over by a train,” said a GRP official at Kharar. The victim was wearing a blue suit.

Mohali realtor arrested on rape charge

Panchkula, August 2
The Panchkula police today arrested a coloniser of Mohali for allegedly raping a woman at a hotel in Morni.

A team from the Chandimandir police station arrested the accused, identified as Devinder Gill, from Noida.

The police said Gill had allegedly raped a woman on the pretext of marrying her. Later, the victim filed a police complaint against him. Her medical examination confirmed the crime.

Devinder was declared a PO in a fraud case. Phase 1 police station SHO Ravinder Pal said, “Devinder Gill was booked for fraud of Rs 2.5 crore this year and was absconding since then.”

Swimmers Teesta Tewani, Kavya Nayar and Sanchi Bhargava secured first three positions in the 50 meters freestyle event of girls’ category (Under-8) during the ongoing Chandigarh State Swimming Championship inaugurated at Swimming Pool of Panjab University here today.

Teesta Tewani completed the patch in 00.53.65 seconds while, Kavya Nayar secured second place in 00.57.53 seconds. Sanchi Bhargava finished third in 1.02.35 minutes. More than 200 swimmers under various age categories of boys and girls (under 8 to seniors’ category) participated in the event. The event was organised by the Tricity Swimmers Welfare Society.

Short-circuit sparks fire at PCA stadium, no loss of property

Fire broke out inside the Gymnasium Hall of the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) stadium in Mohali, near the main gate, here this evening. No loss of property has been reported so far.

The fire broke out following a short circuit inside the gymnasium room. Members were also present inside the hall.

According to the Mohali Fire Department, the emergency call was received at 6.12 pm.

“We received a call at 6.12 pm informing us about the fire inside the Gymnasium Hall of the PCA stadium,” said Lakwinder Singh of the Fire Department.

Shockingly, the fire-fighting equipment of the PCA, including the alarm system and hydrants, failed to operate. As per the fire fighters, the hydrants were found to be in a non-functional condition.

A spokesperson of the PCA stadium remained unavailable to comment on the issue.

In February 2008, a major fire broke out at the PCA stadium that gutted its top floor and property worth crores of rupees. No casulaty was, however, reported back then. The fire was caused by a spark of welding equipment being used for the renovation work on the floor. The fire spread across 11,000 sq ft of area within minutes. During that time too, the firefighting equipment at the PCA stadium were found to be non-functional.

No lessons learnt

The firefighting provisions made by the PCA, including the alarm system and hydrants, did not operate at the time of the incident. In February 2008 too, when a fire broke out at the stadium, the equipment were found to be non-functional.

DAV outplay St John’s in quarterfinals

DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, outclassed St John’s High School, Sector 26, 2-0, in a quarterfinal of ongoing Pre-Subroto Football Cup for Boys (U-17), being played on the ground of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 22, here today.

Taking the charge, DAV lads started pressurising St John’s defence in the beginning and attained the lead in the 15th minute through a brace by Nitin Bhandari. After a while, Rajat doubled the lead, after converting an awarded free-kick in team’s favor in the 32nd minute of the match.

In the second match, Delhi Public School, Sector 40, defeated Government Model High School, Sector 29, 5-0. The goals started pouring-in since the eighth minute with Harship scoring the lead followed by goals by Dhruv in the 30th minute, Shivansh in the 35th minute, Manik in 40th minute and Uday in the 42nd minute.

In the third match, Strawberry World School, Sector 26, defeated St Joseph School, Sector 44, 3-0. Sohail shined in the Strawberry school’s win with scoring a goal each in the seventh minute and 20th minute. Maulik scored the third goal of the team in the 36th minute.

In the last match, Saupin School, Sector 32, went down against St Kabir School, Sector 26, 2-0. Arjit scored both the goals in the sixth minute and 26th minute.

Saupin’s pip St Stephen’s by eight wickets

Saupin’s School, Sector 32, registered an eight-wicket win over St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, in a match of the ongoing Inter-School Cricket Championship for Boys (U-14) on the ground of DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, here today.

After putting to bat first, St Stephen’s failed to face a convincing bowling attack by Saupin’s School and bundled out their innings on a mere total of 71 runs in 16.5 overs. Opener Prabhsimran scripted the team’s total and scored 33 runs off 31 balls, inclusive of four boundaries. For bowling side, Pushkar and Atul handled the charge and claimed three wickets and two wickets, respectively.

Chasing the target, Saupin’s scored 72 runs in 16 overs with Gauravdeep scoring 24 runs off 31 balls, including three boundaries, and Manan contributing 21 runs off 31 balls, including three boundaries. Ankit from Stephen’s claimed one for 17 runs. — TNS

Jahnavi, Tanya log win in Round 1 of tennis tourney

Top-seed Jahnavi Shivran and second-seed Tanya Batra tasted success in the first round matches of the girls’ category in the CLTA-AITA’s Championship Series Tennis Tournament here today.

Jahnavi conceded three games against Mansi Singh and registered a thumping win, 4-1, 4-2, while, Tanya moved ahead without conceding a game against Arti Nayan 4-0, 4-0.

In other matches of the same category, CHART trainee Nikita won decider tie-breaker 8-6 against Yamini Issar to move to pre-quarters. Bindu Kulhria defeated CLTA trainee Deepshikha 4-2 and 4-0 and Princy Panchal defeated Srishty Dheer 4-0, 5-4 (6).

In the boys’ category, CLTA trainee MS Karthik upset 11th seed Nishant Kumar 8-5 while, 14th seed Abhimanyu Rojra was upset by Amol Juneja 8-5.

UT Open Tennis Tournament for boys and girls from August 5

The UT Sports Department will host the UT Open Tennis Tournament for boys and girls (U-19) from August 5 to 8 at the tennis courts of Lake Sports Complex, Chandigarh. Interested players can confirm their entries at the Lake Sports Complex with Anita Mittal and Ajay or at the tennis courts, Sports Complex, in Sector 42 with Shubham Kamboj and Parveen Kumar from 6 am to 8 am and 4pm to 7 pm before August 3 (till 7pm).
