The anti-corruption branch of the CBI today arrested a sub-divisional officer (SDO) with the Horticulture Department of the UT Administration, Navraj Singh Dhillon, along with two other employees of the UT Horticulture Department for taking a bribe of Rs 5,000 from a contractor.

Proposal to hike fine for encroachers: UT writes to MHA

Encroachments at a market in Sector 22 To deal with encroachments in markets in the city, the UT Administration has once again written to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to increase the fine for encroachers from the existing Rs 500 to Rs 10,000. Recently, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had rapped the Chandigarh Administration for displaying a complete lack of will “to do anything” on encroachments.

MC surprise check mere ‘eyewash’
Chandigarh, July 14
Residents protest after they were overcharged by an employee of the parking contractor in front of the MC office in Chandigarh on Monday The drive of the Municipal Corporation under Mayor Harphool Kalyan to detect violations at paid parking lots in the city was mere ‘eyewash’. Kalyan along with MC officials and members of the Paid Parking Committee, today inspected three parking lots — Sukhna Lake parking lot, Elante Mall parking lot and the Empire Store in Sector 17— but failed to detect overcharging by contractors from the public.

Residents upset over delayed monsoon

Once again, predictions made by the Met Department for the city has failed which has upset residents as they have to bear the scorching and humid conditions for long. As per the Met forecast, the monsoon was likely to arrive today, but it just drizzled in a few areas this morning, which resulted in increase in humidity.

Thefts on the rise
Chandigarh, July 14
Two burglary cases, and six motor vehicle thefts were reported from across the city in the last two days. In the first incident, Shakti Kohli, a resident of Sector 8-C, reported that Rs 16,000 and gold jewellery were stolen from his house on July 12.

Seattle based developers John Samuel and Bruce Woolsey have announced the launch of Blix, the first ever-mobile application in the personal directory space for Indian smartphone users. Blix uses the GPS on an Android or iOS smartphone to help users’ record, track, save places of importance and share it only with people they choose to.

The Medicos Legal Action Group (MLAG) has termed the health Budget highly disappointing stating that their persistent demand to increase spending on health has not only been ignored but the budgeting in many subheads has been reduced. MLAG convenor Dr Neeraj Nagpal said, “The marginal increase, if any, on clubbing the budgeted funds in the central and state pools would barely counter inflation.”

As many as 17 candidates appeared today for interview for the post of the Registrar of Panjab University, which was lying vacant since January this year. Highly placed sources in the university said in two rounds of interviews today, 18 candidates were called out, of which one did not appear for the interview.

The two murder accused, Kuldeep Singh, alias Deepa, and Sukhpreet Singh, alias Roda, of SAD activist Gurjant Singh have been sent to five-day police remand today. Both the accused were produced before Mohali’s Chief Judicial Magistrate Surabhi Prashar’s court this afternoon.
