Dera Bassi court complex project hits a roadblock
Dera Bassi, July 14 The decision for shifting the project to another place was taken as the site in Devi Nagar village on the Ambala-Kalka highway was under litigation. Senior officials in the district administration and the judiciary, comprising Mohali Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Poonam Deep Kaur, Ropar District and Sessions Judge Amarjot Bhatti, AK Mittal, an inspecting judge from Punjab and Haryana High Court, Dera Bassi SDM Sanjiv Kumar, Dera Bassi Municipal Council executive officer Rajesh Sharma and officials from the revenue department, decided this after a meeting held in Mohali on Saturday. SDM Sanjiv Kumar claimed that he had been asked to identify a couple of alternative sites and submit a report to the ADC at the earliest. “We have already identified four-five sites for setting up of the courts complex. After going through the revenue records of these sites, a report would be prepared and submitted to the ADC,” the SDM said. The complex is to be constructed by the Building and Roads (B&R) wing of the Punjab Public Works Department (PPWD) at a cost of over Rs 7.50 crore. Earlier, the court of the Mohali ADC (Development) had declared that the Devi Nagar panchayat owns 202 bigha of shamlat land situated near Dera Bassi on the Ambala-Chandigarh highway. Following this, five acres were earmarked for construction of the complex. Later, villagers filed cases against the gram panchayat in the court of ADC, and it was decided that 202 bigha 16 marla of shamlat land was vested in the panchayat under Section 11 of the Punjab Village Common Land (Regulation) Act, 1961. Dera Bassi govt college introduces new courses
Dera Bassi, July 14 “We applied for two new self financing courses B Com (professional) and Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Applications (PGDCA) in the mid of 2013 at Punjabi University. University has sanctioned 60 seats for B Com (professional) and 30 seats for PGDCA for the session 2014-15, for which admissions are under process.” Total 120 seats (including 60 seats) of existing course BCom will now be available for BCom aspirants from this session. About 150 aspirants have filled the admission forms. On merit basis 60 seats in BCom have been filled with the cutoff of 70 per cent and seats in B Com (professional) were filled with cutoff of around 57 per cent till last Wednesday. New appointment of teachers and other required staff will be hired from these self financing courses, said principle. One more graduation course BCA is expected to be introduced in the next academic session. |

Teenage girl, woman run over by trains
Dera Bassi, July 14 It is learnt that the body of 18-year-old girl old was found on railway tracks in Mohan Nagar this morning. The deceased was wearing a blue T-shirt, a black lower and a pair fo red and black footwear. She was carrying a bag in which a slip was found that mentioned a couple of phone numbers. When contacted on these numbers, it was learnt that she had been looking for a room on rent in Dera Bassi. She belonged to Delhi and was in the town to take admission in a dental college, the police said. In the other case, a woman, about 35 years of age, was crushed to death under the Sadbhavna Express near Ghaggar railway station. Rajinder Singh, in-charge, Government Railway Police (GRP), Mubarikpur, said she was wearing a suit and a pair of blue bathroom sleepers. The deceased seemed to be a migrant. Ranjit Singh, Head Constable with RP, Lalru, said the mutilated bodies have been sent to the Civil Hospital at Dera Bassi. The bodies would be preserved at the hospital for 72 hours for identification. The police have initiated inquest proceedings in this regard, he added. |

Deshraj case: CFSL provides audio CD to defence counsel
Chandigarh, July 14 The SP, who was accused of corruption, had earlier moved an application in a CBI court seeking an independent analysis of the voice samples that were with the investigating agency. The IPS officer had sought to conduct a mirror image of all the voice recordings that were with the investigating agency so that these could be analysed by private experts. The application was allowed by the CBI Court of Special Judge Vimal Kumar. Deshraj Singh moved an application through senior advocate SK Garg Nirwana stating that they feared influence by the CBI in the case and sought that an independent analysis of the all the voice recordings be conducted. On receiving a complaint from Inspector Anokh Singh, the SHO of the Sector 26 police station, the CBI had, on October 18, 2012, laid a trap to catch Deshraj Singh. The Inspector had allegedly recorded the voice of the SP demanding Rs 1 lakh as bribe on various occasions before and on the day the trap was laid. |

2 held for fraud
Mohali, July 14 Accused Sanjiv Kumar (26), a resident of Kathua, Jammu and his accomplice Rajinder Kumar (26), took Rs 80,000 fraudulently from victim DLN Bhargav from Vijaywada (Andhra Pradesh) for getting him a job in the navy. “While taking money from the victim in Mohali, the accused had promised him that he would get his appointment letter soon from Chennai,” said SP (City) Swarndeep Singh. The victim came to their contact last month through Facebook on which they have advertised regarding job opportunities in the navy. Sanjiv Kumar worked as JE in merchant navy and had left the job a year ago. When the victim approached the Mohali Police, he was asked to contact the accused again after changing his identity. “The accused, who could not identify Bhargav, called him again at Phase 7 with Rs 80,000 on July 13. When they came here to meet Bhargava, we arrested them,” said SP Swarndeep Singh. The police also recovered a Verna car, which was being used by the accused. 2 cartons of liquor seized
Morni (Panchkula), July 14 During the raids, the police recovered two cartons of country-made liquor from the house of Babu Ram in Thapli village.SI Paramjit Singh, in charge Morni police post, revealed that Babu Ram had stocked the liquor in his house. A case under the Excise Act has been registered against him.No arrest has been made in this regard so far. The SI revealed that more raids would be conducted at different places to check illegal sale of the liquor. |

Mohali, July 14 In the girls’ (U-12) category, Srishti Dhir bagged the title defeating Navjot Kaur in straight sets. Marching ahead to win the final Dhir maintained lead throughout the rally. She won the game in straight sets 4-2, 4-2. In the semifinals, Srishti Dhir defeated Simran Garg 6-1. In the final of boys (U-10) category, Arshjot Singh beat Anuvansh Chugh with ease and bagged the title. Arshjot Singh won the first set 4-1. In the second set, he again fired good shots to blank his opponent 4-0. He won the match 4-1 and 4-0. Arshjot marched into final after defeating Jivaj at a serve breaking score of 6-3 while Anuvansh made his place with defeating Parth 6-2. Siddarth Goyal overpowered Akshit Chhabra to lift the title of boys’ (U-14) category. Siddarth overpowered his rival 4-2 in the first set while in the second he continued to dominate the game and won the second set 4-2. Panjab University decides to appoint regular director for sports
Chandigarh, July 14 The chair that is being looked after by the chairperson of Department for Physical Education, as an additional charge, will be filled soon, as the committee constituted by the vice-chancellor has approved the selection procedure. Finally waking up from slumbers, the Panjab University Chandigarh decided to follow UGC 2010 guidelines to appoint a regular director. Appointment of regular director is a long pending issue and notably for the same post was approved last year. However, later the advertisement was cancelled following some printing errors. The authorities had received five applications at that time. As per the meeting minutes, held on June 13, the post will filled as the Director of Physical Education and Sports. However, the Dean Student Welfare (DSW) maintained that the post will be not merged with the physical education department. “It was decided to fill the post and for that the university has decided to follow the UGC 2010 guidelines. Last year, the post was cancelled following some printing errors in the advertisement,” said Navdeep Goyal, DSW. Sources also alleged that the post was kept vacant following some unknown reasons by the top authorities of the university. When asked about the reason for not filling the post for past two years and cancellation of post for assistant director, after conducting screening and physical fitness test, the DSW added, “It was important to fill the post for the welfare of sports. I have nothing to comment on cancellation of posts for assistant directors. The post for regular director is approved and the same will advertise soon,” said the DSW. The meeting was attended by Dean University instruction, Dean (research), Dean Student Welfare (Men and Women) and chairperson of Department of Physical Education. An inspiration for budding football players
Chandigarh, July 14 At this age, he still plays soccer and imparts training to young players. He is a well known figure. Famous as Bhola uncle, he is a role model for young players. He still features in some seven-a-side local tournaments and prefers to play as a game-maker. “It’s been over 40 years that I am in this city. Although, I haven’t got much hyped fame, still the local players treat me as their first coach. Football Stadium, Sector 17, AKSIPS School, Sector 41, Office of AG Haryana (Chandigarh) have given me a chance to live big for my dream. And now after retirement, I will focus to coach nursery children,” stated Bhola. A retired employee of AG Haryana audit office Chandigarh, in his early day, represented Haryana (Kalka) in national level competition. He was the member of his office that played in the north zone and all-India football tournaments. Following the aim, he wants to spread the soccer’s passion in the nearby areas. “I am not a qualified coach but able to spot the talent and guide him or her further to get good coaching. Small children in nearby areas are full of talent and I want to guide them in right direction. Chandigarh is one of the best places for young kids with ample number of facilities. One should divert such facilities to children of nearby areas also,” expressed Bhola. On recent concluded world cup, he said, “It’s amazing that not only local youth but children have also started taking keen interest in the game. Small trainees of our school were well aware about the teams and their members. While the 2014 was as good as the previous world cups that I have seen so far. Germany really played well and deserves to be crowned as the champions. I just wish, in 2017 FIFA junior world Cup, our junior team (hosts) would play at their best. Our performance in that tournament may help us to gain some identity,” stated Bhola Nath. |
City woman becomes international TT umpire
Chandigarh, July 14 Malik passed the examination conducted by International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) and Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI), to become an international umpire at Ajmer (Rajasthan) on Sunday. Malik is Doctorate (Ph.d) in physical education and also a qualified coach of table tennis. She had also won various awards in the field of table tennis, both as a player and as an official. She had also represented Panjab University in inter-university competitions and at present she is an active member of the Chandigarh Table Tennis Association. — TNS |
