RS bypoll: Nitish seeks Lalu’s help
Patna, June 14 “The BJP is the main conspirator in the RS byelections (for supporting rebellion within JD-U and backing two Independents). It wants to destabilise the Jitan Ram Manjhi government and thrust an early election in Bihar,” Kumar said. "I have talked to Lalu Prasad, Congress state chief Ashok Choudhary, its legislature party leader Sadanand Singh and CPI secretary Rajendra Singh seeking their support for victory of two JD(U) candidates in the bypoll to the Rajya Sabha in Bihar," Kumar told reporters at the JD(U) headquarters here. Asked whether his appeal to Prasad arose from political compulsion, Kumar said, "No, it is because of the prevailing political circumstances as we have to fight a common enemy in BJP which is mocking us.” Senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi, however, ridiculed Kumar for “begging” Prasad against whom he fought for past two decades for victory of his candidates in the RS bypoll. "The BJP has no interest to destabilise the Jitan Ram Manjhi government which is being remote-controlled by Nitish Kumar. He has set his house on fire and blaming BJP for it," he said. "The truth is that he is an expert in engineering defection in other parties. He fomented dissension within RJD resulting in defection of 13 MLAs and ultimately asking three of them to resign to bring down the House strength, he alleged.

Cong hopeful of getting Oppn Leader's post
New Delhi, June 14 Most past precedents where no LOP was recognised in the Lower House go back to a time when there were hardly any enactments mandating the nomination of LOP on the panel to select constitutional authorities like the Chief Vigilance Commissioner, chairperson of National Human Rights Commission, Lokpal among others. The most cited precedence when there was no recognised LOP in the Lok Sabha was the one in 1984 when the ruling Congress, armed with a brute majority in the House, denied the second largest party, TDP, the LOP’s post in Lok Sabha. The reason given at that time was – the TDP did not command seats equivalent to 10 per cent strength of the House, a requirement as per one law. But the Congress strategists this time are hopeful that the BJP, even with 282 MPs in the LS, would not find it easy to repeat the 1984 move denying the second largest party a LOP’s position. “In 1984, there were no enactments which required the presence of LOP of the Lok Sabha on panels for the selection of the CBI Director, the NHRC Chairperson, the CVC and the Lokpal. Denial of LOP post at that time would not have caused any legal or constitutional crisis. But with major laws requiring LOP’s nomination, the ruling party would not find it easy to deny us the LOP’s post merely on the basis of numbers. “If they do, the signal going out would be – they are not interested in building institutions,” said a top Congress strategist, admitting that the party had completed the formality required to seek the position of LOP in LS. Law on the party’s side?

Infosys diluted focus: Murthy
Bangalore, June 14 Addressing shareholders for the last time as the Executive Chairman, Murthy, who earlier this week announced that he and his son Rohan had decided to step down four years ahead of their term, said his “work was done” and hoped that the new CEO Vishal Sikka would chart a new course without any interference from founders. “...fairness, transparency, meritocracy and accountability are the key to success for any enterprise. Somehow, the company had diluted its focus on meritocracy and accountability during the last decade,” Murthy said at the 33rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) here. Describing Sikka as a technology visionary, Murthy said he had carried out the mandate that the Infosys board had accorded him about a year ago. Sikka, whose appointment was announced on June 12, was not present at the AGM as he was on his way to the US. Thirty-three years since its inception, the Indian IT behemoth appointed its first non-founder CEO in Sikka, who was roped in from outside. Analysts believe this could be the “fresh start” that Infosys needed as it has lagged behind peers such as TCS and HCL Technologies. Murthy, who founded Infosys along with six engineers in 1981, bid adieu to the over $8 billion entity for the second time. He was called back from retirement last June. Defending his decision to bring in his son, Rohan, Murthy said he wanted to bring in a “fresh perspective to the field” and focus on the use of “technology and high quality people.” Murthy will continue as the non-Executive Chairman till October 10, after which he will be designated as the Chairman Emeritus.
— PTI All praise for son Rohan
Defending his decision to bring in Rohan, Murthy said he had inducted his son Rohan Murty in the Infosys as the Executive Assistant because he needed someone "intelligent" and "smart" to assist him. "Last year, when the board requested me to come back, I knew I needed somebody by my side who is intelligent, smart and is new to the industry to the point where he would not accept status quo," he said.

Efforts on to bring Dawood to India, says govt
New Delhi, June 14 The minister said the CBI followed a set procedure and it had to discuss issues with various ministries before taking any decision for getting the things done. He says the agency is facing staff crisis and financial problems. When asked about the cases taken over by the CBI from the state police, he said, “Though the CBI is over burdened, it takes over the police cases on the request of the particular state government.
Taking state cases is a part of the procedure and the CBI cannot deviate from it. It also shows that
the people have faith in the CBI.” He said the government was considering giving more power to the CBI and the decision would be taken on the right time. |
Safe blood banks in every dist soon
New Delhi, June 14 The assurance came from Health Minister Harsh Vardhan during the launch of a Blood Donation Drive to mark the World Blood Donors’ Day today. Vardhan led the campaign by donating his blood. Currently, against the requirement of 12 to 13 million units of blood every year, India collects 10 million units. Vardhan attributed the rising demand to surgeries, accidents and medical tourism. He said about 87 per cent pregnant women suffered from anaemia, of which 13.5 per cent suffered acute anaemia which could be life threatening. Citing “Maternal Health-Donate blood to save mothers”, the theme for this year’s World Blood Donors’ Day, Vardhan said: “If there were more safe blood banks in the country, the number of women dying during pregnancy due to loss of blood can be significantly reduced.” Harsh Vardhan today unveiled the National Policy for Access to Plasma Derived Medicinal Products from Human Plasma for Clinical or Therapeutic Use. The Policy aims at ensuring easily accessible and adequately available high-quality plasma-derived proteins for clinical and therapeutic use. |
