BJP set to corner SAD
on dismal poll show
Chandigarh, June 14 However contrary to the speculations, the BJP or its state or central leadership is in no mood to walk out of the alliance at this stage. Disturbed over the dismal performance of the alliance, which could bag only six of the 13 Lok Sabha seats, the party high command had formed a seven-member fact-finding committee headed by former Punjab minister Balramji Dass Tandon. Former minister Manoranjan Kalia, Pathankot MLA Ashwani Sharma, former BJP chief Rajinder Bhandari, adviser to Punjab CM Tikshan Sud, BJP vice-president Laxmi Kanta Chawla and Punjab Traders' Board chairman Narottam Dev Ratti are the six members of the committee. Tandon said: "We will submit the report to BJP's in charge of Punjab Affairs Shanta Kumar and the state BJP president within a week." Highly placed sources in the BJP said the findings of the committee were "startling" and these could create more tension between the alliance partners. The members of the committee are disturbed over the fact that Punjab is the only state where the alliance failed to do well due to "strong anti-incumbency" against the state government, particularly the SAD. The sources said the report had listed several factors behind the combine's dismal performance. There were government's failure to control drug trade, skyrocketing sand and gravel prices, failure to enlighten people on property tax as a substitute of house tax, high building regularisation charges, delay in VAT refund to traders and interference of halqa in charges in administrative functioning. They said the report had particularly emphasised on "illegal activities of SAD halqa chiefs such as land grab, patronising criminals and drug traders". Report lists factors

Dera head shot dead in Moga
Moga, June 14 Sources said the religious leader, who was in his late thirties, was busy meeting his followers when two youths from within the crowd allegedly fired shots at him from close range. He was rushed to hospital where he was declared brought dead. He suffered bullet injuries on his head and chest. The identity of the assailants was not known yet, although it had been confirmed that the shots were fired from a revolver, said sources. The dera is situated along the Moga-Ferozepur national highway on the outskirts of Khukhrana village, near Dagru railway crossing. Paras Mani had constructed his dera on a 2-acre land given by the people of Khukhrana village five years ago. There had been a significant increase in the number of his followers in the last couple of years. However, none of his followers have any information about his antecedents. The state intelligence had conducted several inquiries to know about his background, but he reportedly did not cooperate. Sources in the intelligence said Mani was a resident of Ludhiana. A local police officer, however, claimed he belonged to Jalandhar. The central and state intelligence agencies had been keeping a close eye on him for the past several months suspecting him to be an ISI agent or a runaway criminal. A police officer said it could be a case of personal enmity. Crime trail

Clergy meets today, Golden Temple clash on agenda
Amritsar, June 14 Sources said the Sikh clergy may discuss the violent clash that witnessed violation of ‘maryada’ at the Takht. However, any decision on this would come only after the
SGPC probe panel submits its report. Talking to The Tribune, Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh said though they would not take any decision regarding the incident, they would certainly deliberate on the ways to avert such incidents in future. He said “routine matters” would be discussed during the meeting. Besides, the issue of Nanakshahi Calendar is back in the limelight with Sikhs in Pakistan observing the martyrdom day of Guru Arjan Dev twice for the second consecutive year. The SGPC and the DSGMC had not sent their jathas to Pakistan after the Pakistan High Commission denied visas to the pilgrims. The issue of violent clash at Takht Sri Patna Sahib on January 7 is also pending before the Takht. During the last meeting of the Sikh clergy, the superintendent of Takht Sri Patna Sahib had met the Sikh high priests and appealed them not to invite Takht Sri Patna Sahib Jathedar Giani Iqbal Singh in their meetings in view of his dismissal. SGPC task force illegal, says Mann Phagwara: SAD (Amritsar) chief Simranjit Singh Maan has alleged that the SGPC task force had been set up in an unconstitutional manner. Mann said according to the Sikh Gurdwara Act 1925, no such private militia could exist. “But the SGPC has one that it utilises for its vested interests and dirty politics.” |

Bajwa a failure: SAD
Chandigarh, June 14 In a statement here, SAD general secretary Maheshinder Singh Grewal said: "Bajwa, instead of looking into his own dismal performance as well as that of the state Congress under his leadership, is desperately trying to portray that there is a wedge between the SAD and the BJP." Grewal said Bajwa should first explain his own humiliating defeat from his constituency Gurdaspur. "He should also explain why he lost even from the Qadian assembly segment which is represented by his wife Charanjit
