Living a stage
Hours before staging the play, Mahendra Kumar rechecks the 'to-do' list he has been following since the morning. In between the excitement and anxiety, the two emotions he is primarily going through, he misses a few things and heads out straight to buy them himself! That he can instruct one of his student actors to fetch them for him doesn't cross his mind, "Theatre is a way of life for me and doing anything related to it is not work, but mere living. It's like breathing in and out," says the renowned thespian and co-founder of the Department of Indian Theatre, Panjab University.
It has been exactly 44 years since the inception of the department in 1972 and with it his career as a theatre director. He has done Hindi as well as Punjabi adaptations of plays by Shakespeare and Gogol, as also English adaptations of plays written in Indian Languages. This time too, he is presenting a classic Sanskrit play, Mrichhkatikam by King Shudraka (classic here goes back to 2000 years), in colloquial Hindi as Vasantasena. "People have come up to me and shared their experiences of watching my plays, the most common being that they have read Shakespeare before but grasped it for the first time." His modern adaptations are not limited to simplification of the language but adding props and using technology that makes his plays 'audience friendly'. For Vasantasena, he is using a revolving stage, which he confesses is not a novel concept. "But the usage is novel." Actors, who otherwise have to follow space rules, enjoy freedom of a different sort here. "You see the space move, take a shape according to the requirement of a particular scene," say Kumar, who is as popular as a set designer as he is for his theatre exploits. A garden thus turns into a temple, turns into a bar, turns into a bed chamber and then turns into an execution ground! "It's like sitting in a train and reaching milestones in a journey," he says. The modern-day adaptation is just the initial hiccup of getting the play ready. Involving each and every student of the department is what he spells as the biggest challenge. "So you have to ensure that all students participate and treat themselves as integral part of the production process." There are students playing the lead role, then there are some posing as props or assisting backstage. "You have to involve them to give them a sense of belonging. We work for 12 hours daily and I am with them working all the time." And there is no scope of turning complacent, for Kumar says theatre is an art of communicating with the audience. "To make them understand what we mean as actors, we need to develop understanding among us first," says Kumar, as he takes a look at the list once again, gets a nod from co-director as well as costume designer Shveta and heads to the department. By now, he starts looking tired and notices our concern. "Is breathing ever tiring? I am just doing theatre," he signs off. Catching up!
One of the male leads showing off his chiselled eight-packs abs, the heroine walking out of the sea in a bikini, a movie set largely in Pattaya City, Alisha Chenoy lending her voice, two games on it — Pollywood is fast catching up with the ways of Bollywood!
On the launch of theatrical trailer of Yaaran Da Katchup on Wednesday in Chandigarh, the male actors, director and producer strike a confident pose, while its leading ladies Simpy and Shagun appeared a bit anxious even as the film's release date is approaching near. Friendly ties "We have tried to blend the Punjabi film tradition with the modern Bollywood take," says the producer Vikram Bansal. Bollywood influence we clearly see, the traditional take Vikram explains, "The veterans of our industry, Jaswinder Bhalla, BN Sharma and Rana Ranbir, bring that touch." The film, which revolves around three friends, is about friendship, some romance and the chaos the trio creates once they get together for their seven-yearly union. Interestingly, it is BN Sharma's first double role with him having an impressive 85 films to his credit. Right break Anil Juneja flaunts his eight-pack abs in the film; we ask the fitness freak what made him go for films. "I was active in theatre for a long time now, Yaaran Da Katchup gave me the right break," says Anil. While whole of the unit had fun on sets, Anil lips were sealed and his focus remained on his workouts. "It's for the first time that you will see a bare body fight in a Punjabi film," says Anil. Gaming zone The promotion bug has also caught Pollywood. Leaving no stone unturned to bring the audience to the theatre the crew also released two games based on the movie. Here too the director has brought the old and new alike. While the Yaaran Da Katchup Fun Unlimited 2D is a tap game for those short on time, Yaaran Da Katchup Fun Going is a 3D game on the lines of snake and ladder. "One can play endlessly with our film characters in 3D," shares Vikram. The film has Hardy Sandhu, Varun Sharma and Anil Juneja in the lead roles. It has been directed by Abhay Baiju Chhabra and releases on July 18. mona@tribunemail.com

Nurturing dreams
An interesting anecdote, a funny joke or a heart-warming story; the thing that touches is that they not only just pull the right strings but also bring along a strong desire to share them. Besides a passion for film-making, it was the urge to share that kept Shirin Anandita go ahead with the film Ho Javey Je Pyaar. So much so that she ended up not just penning it but producing it as well.
"It is a very beautiful and touching love story. It warmed my heart so much that I had to write it and since nobody finances ventures starring debutants, I produced it as well," shares the writer-director from Ambala. "Our problems and conditions might be different but human emotions are universal. Something like a love story doesn't even need a title for people to understand." At times, difficulty lies in attempting the simplest of things. "Difficult stories are in fact easy because by the time people understand, the film is over." She adds, "Since it is a story that I have written, direction came easy. I knew what the script demanded so I made the necessary changes constantly." The film stars debutants Zorawar Singh and Feroza Kaur Heer, who have a background in theatre. She laughs, "The only thing I did not do is acting because the script demanded raw and fresh faces. There is a certain innocence about newcomers that seasoned actors cannot bring along." A love story based in a Punjabi urban-rural setting, the film explores what a relationship goes through and how love changes the course of one's life. "The ideas are seldom different; it is how you treat a subject that makes a difference." She adds, "The film releases on July 11 and has been shot in Ambala, Sangrur and Chandigarh. The schedule lasted one month." The music has been given by Inder Raj and the film features seven songs. Having worked as an assistant director on the sets of films like Adda, Komal Gandhar, Monopoly and Ramaiya Vastavaiya, the passion for film-making goes back to childhood. "It's been my childhood dream to make a Punjabi film…if you are bitten by the film bug, you just enjoy cinema no matter what and how it is." Coming up is a film, "on a very international subject which explores the world of spiritualism and how things happen there." As for this one, "I'm very happy with the way the film has turned out. The rest is up to the audience." manpriya@tribunemail.com

COMING SOON The Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi, in collaboration with Alliance Française Le Corbusier de Chandigarh, is organising the screening of three films, directed by Alain Jaubert. The duration of the films is of thirty minutes each. The films, based on the European masters, will be screened on June 15 at the auditorium of Government Museum and Art Gallery, Sector 10 C, Chandigarh from 5.30 pm onwards. Entry is free. The films are based on the following masters: Gericault (1791-1824) The Raft of the Medusa by Théodore Géricault (1819, Louvre, Paris) is one of the biggest paintings in the Louvre (at just under five metres high and over seven metres long) and one of the most famous (it was added to the Louvre's collection almost immediately after the death of the artist). This detailed reconstruction of a contemporary tragedy caused a scandal at the Salon of 1819, where it was exhibited under the title Shipwreck. The scandal was both political and aesthetic. Géricault worked obsessively on the subject. J Louis David (1748-1825) Famous for Les Sabines (1799), Musée du Louvre, Paris, artist Jean-Louis David while reading the classics, came across an episode of the founding of Rome which inspired him to create a series of drawings and a painting, which, completed in 1799, was exceptional both in size and in subject matter. Goya (1746-1828) La Lettre, la flèche et le balai: 'Les Jeunes (Circa 1812) and Les Vieilles (Circa 1810) Musée des Beaux-Arts, Lille Two paintings of the artist are with the same dimensions and always associated with each other. But are they really companion pieces? If historical investigation doesn't provide an answer, several other clues do indicate that they are. The ensemble creates a kind of story of destiny on the one hand and on the other, an old disabused painter who regained his energy through a new love. — TNS |

CELEB POINT Divya Dutta It is never the destination…it's always the journey. When we were young, we heard a lot of grown-up people talk about goals and how to achieve them. We heard people landing with good jobs and saying — 'Now since I have achieved this, I am sorted.' But the fact is they were not! Once the job is there, the hunt for something else begins…just in the quest to get 'sorted'. The quest is unending, but the point is at what cost? For that future, don't we forget the present? We forget to cherish and enjoy each moment. Life doesn't wait, it just keeps happening to you! So keep enjoying it as it flows your way. I was seeing a few pictures of mine when I was out holidaying with my family. Seeing my pictures, a friend said — 'You seem to be having a lot of fun.' I was, indeed, but was also going through an emotional crisis at that time. So it was a mixed feeling. Both sides of life were happening to me simultaneously. That was the flow of life for me at that time. Maybe it was easy to endure my tension because it came packaged with my holiday or maybe I wasn't supposed to just feel euphoric about my holiday. It's never black and white! Life is a mixed bag of good and bad thrown at you. It's intertwined, always! You have to endure the bad and enjoy the good. Just let it pass. I wanted to be an actor, I would always say once that big launch happens for me I'll be sorted. So I am sorted today. And without a dream launch or sugar daddies planning my each move. I don't keep waiting for something that didn't come. I made the best of what came my way. It's like life might not go the way you plan it, but it definitely holds your little finger and takes you where you belong. All you have to do is walk the path with faith. Enjoying the rivers, the sunshine, the flower beds and yes some thorny roads...everything…because once you reach your destination you'll have an important question to answer…did I enjoy my journey! green
thumb It is better to make preparations before any plantation drive Satish Narula Let the metrological predictions go on, we all know the monsoon is round the corner! And that is the time to plant trees and shrubs. In an effort to make the planet green, many organisations contribute through plantation drives that also involve people. Furthermore, there are those who start giving plants free of cost from various sources such as petrol pump, hospitals, banks, clubs or institutions like the department of forests and horticulture, to count a few. It is good to do something for humanity, but let us do it in a scientific way. Do not think it is too hot and early for taking action. Those who do such voluntary service need to be active at this time. In fact, the preparations start a month prior to the active commencement of plantation. It has been seen that the species planted in pre-dug and filled pit definitely do better than those planted at the spur of the moment, without planning. The place of planting has to be decided in advance. 'Sudden' planting may prove wrong at later stage and then it is too late to do corrections, especially in case of trees. It is also better if you know in advance what species are you getting or giving for plantation so that proper selection of the place is done, depending upon the potential spread of the tree in the times to come. There is a procedure to plant a tree or shrub. A pit of at least three feet depth and with a similar diameter is required for planting trees. For shrubs, one could do with two to two-and-a-half feet dimensions. The upper soil, say half of the pit depth, is kept on one side and the lower soil is rejected. The upper soil is then mixed with equal quantity of well rotten farmyard manure and to this mixture is added about 30 grams of insecticide dust. The dust is also sprinkled in the pit before adding mixture of soil and manure. In case the soil is heavy type, add one part soil, one part sand and one part farmyard manure. The pit is filled with the mixture by pressing hard. The mixture is filled six inches above the ground level and watered. This will settle the loose soil and maybe the level goes even below ground level. In that case, the mixture is added to maintain the level. Distributing plants and then helping in planting are done with missionary zeal. In this endeavour, however, rather than doing service we do disservice albeit unknowingly. This is especially so when we distribute fruit trees that are not specified and are obtained from some local source or even from neighboring states or hills. The fruit plants come into bearing after many years and if at that time they bear poor fruits, the disappointment is more.

Wear your attitude
Fashion, they say, keeps changing but style is eternal and sometimes, quite personal. In conversation with Navdeep Kaur, 24, an assistant accounts manager in a private firm, we stand acquainted with yet another definition of style as she says that it is something you are born with. "You cannot imitate another person's sense of style, define your personality," she says, "I am a trendsetter, not a follower,"
Describe your sense of style… I wear anything that I feel comfortable and confident in. I try to experiment with fashion because I believe in setting the trend and not following any. I admire many people and their sense of style, but instead of blindly aping their style, I learn from them and draw influences from them, which I apply to my personal style. Latest addition to your wardrobe… I just purchased a watch from Guess! Brand freak or street smart? I am a blend of both because I like experimenting. Choose one: Sporty, glamorous or chic I like to be sharp and elegant, so it's chic for sure. My style icon… I like the way Sonam Kapoor dresses up. She is quite a fashionista and she looks good in whatever she wears. Who do you think is the worst-dressed celebrity around? I'd crown Vidya Balan with that title. She has an effortless bad sense of style, especially when it comes to Western wear. She reminds me of those good old aunties from the 80s, trying too hard and getting it wrong while attempting to blend the retro with contemporary. One fashion trend you don't understand… I think every trend has its own uniqueness. One should just know how to carry it. Your take on accessories… I think accessories are a must. You can glam up a simple dress by accessorising it right. However, I try not to wear all accessories in one go. I keep in mind the occasion and dress accordingly. Overdoing accessories can make one look like a Christmas tree. One thing that boosts your confidence… Clothes and footwear because it makes me feel very comfortable, thereby boosting up my confidence. I would love to be dressed up by…. There is a lot of potential in the city and I am very fond of Sidhu ji, a city-based designer. She is fabulous and her sense of style is outstanding. One fragrance that you can swear by… Miss Dior! (As told to Amarjot Kaur) |

In the league of stars

Ladies
first
Former Girls Aloud singer Cheryl Cole prefers to receive compliments from women because she feels they are more sincere.
The 30-year-old star said praises from women are more genuine as compared to those from men, reported a magazine. "I find compliments from women are far more genuine than from men. If a guy says, 'You look hot', that doesn't do it for me. I much prefer a woman to say it," she said. Cole said that while the men in her life certainly have an opinion on how she looks, she would much rather have a lady tell her that she looks good. — PTI

Mind over matter
Actress Shilpa Shukla has separated from her husband Mohit Tripathi. She talks about her equation with director Ajay Bahl, being single, turning director and more.
Mutual separation Mohit and I have separated and we are still friends. He lives in Delhi and I live in Mumbai. We are giving each other space and doing what we like, which marriage did not allow us to do. There is no bitterness between us. Close bond There is a special equation between us but I will not put a label on it and demean our relationship. I feel like I have known Ajay for years and people you work with on a film become like a family, anyway. We are close. Exploring spirituality There are some questions to which I have no answers. I have become more spiritual of late and freed myself from worldly materialism. There is a drive towards renunciation. It's a peaceful space to be in and I can't describe the joy I feel. However, I am not celibate. Director's hat I am doing Sujoy's film. But since it has got delayed, I will start work on my film. The film is an adaptation of a chapter from the book, The Guide to Boddhisattva Way of Life by renowned Buddhist scholar, Shantideva. The story is based on the virtue of patience. I wanted to direct it as it lends itself very well cinematically.
Switch over
Rakhi Sawant is turning a new leaf with every passing day. After a disastrous performance at the recently-concluded Lok Sabha elections, the former item girl is trying to claw back into finding her lost spotlight in the film industry once again.
Rakhi was spotted promoting a Marathi movie named Jayjaykar of which she is a co-producer. Though Rakhi insists that she has been associated with this movie right from the very beginning, sources in the know told us that she was roped in only 10 days back to garner publicity for the movie. Having returned to the arc lights after sweating it out as a politician, Rakhi is looking to do good and family oriented movies. When we asked if she would like to reprise the role of an item girl that brought her much success, Rakhi shot down the proposition and said, "I am an actor. I don't want to do item numbers again. I want to act in good and meaningful cinema."

Rs 100 crore while Filmistaan has collected around three crores and is expected to make around Rs six crore, which is good because the movie had a very small budget.
