2 booked for land fraud: The Sirhind police have booked Gurdeep Singh of Bhamarsi and Ravinder Singh of Jalla village in Fategarh Sahib for allegedly defrauding a person of Rs 10 lakh in a land deal. The accused had taken the money from Gurmail Singh of Bhadson, near Patiala, on the pretext of getting registered a plot in his name.

61 lakh for canal repair: The district administration will spend Rs 61 lakh to repair and clean the drains. Deputy Commissioner Arun Sekhri said on Wednesday at Bachat Bhavan that the Drainage Department was cleaning the Sirhind Choe and Mahadian drain and repairing the SYL canal. He said the Lodhiwal choe and Bassi Pathana drain would be cleaned under
MGNREGA. The DC further directed the executive officers of the municipal councils to remove encroachments along the drains.

Say no to polythene: The Ludhiana College of Engineering and Technology, Katani Kalan, in association with Radio Mantra organised a seminar titled “Say No to Polythene, Go Green”. Representatives from NGOs and other sponsors participated in the event with the aim to sensitise youngsters to the negative effects of using polythene and plastic bags. The organisers distributed jute bags to encourage the gathering to shun polythene bags. College principal Dr Pawan Kumar touched upon “green chemistry” and urged students to practise it.

Ex-sarpanch remanded: Balwinder Singh alias Toti, former Akai Dal sarpanch of Daula village, was on Wednesday sent to 14-day judicial custody in the sub-jail here. He was arrested yesterday for allegedly thrashing a Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO), Soil Conservation Department, outside the SDM office complex in Gidderbaha. Bus service for girls: Government Mohindra College will start a bus service for girl students from the upcoming academic session. The college will charge each student Rs 200 per month for the service. The authorities have identified six routes in the city. The buses will pick up students from the bus stand at 8:15 am, 8:45 am and 9:15 am and drop them at 1:45 pm, 2:15 pm and 2:45 pm.

De-addiction centre raided: An unauthorised drug de-addiction centre was raided by a district-level drug de-addiction committee at Cheema village on Wednesday. Deputy Commissioner Arshdeep Singh Thind said the centre was being run without any licence by Devinder Singh, a resident of Cheema village. The team found eight patients (drug addicts) admitted to the
centre.
Two commit suicide: A 20-year-old woman from Bahadurpur village (near Sangrur), and her "paramour" from Badbar village (Barnala) allegedly committed suicide by jumping before a train near Akoi Sahib village. Satinder Kumar, Station House Officer, said the bodies were found lying on the railway track on Wednesday morning. The police had initiated proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC, he added.
Jail inmate dies:
A 68-year-old woman lodged in the district jail died on Wednesday. Jail Superintendent Jagwant Kumar Sharma said Surjit Kaur (68) of Bhasaur village was a diabetic patient and was undergoing treatment. He said she was being taken to the civil hospital when her health deteriorated. But she died on the way, he said. Sharma said she had been lodged in the jail here
along with her son since November 2013.
