With 7/7, BJP sweeps Delhi, sets sight on Assembly polls
NEW DELHI, May 16 The Delhi results also brought further ignominy for the Congress as it was decimated to the third spot in all the seven Lok Sabha constituencies. Although it had ended up third in the state elections in November last as well, what is further humiliating for the Congress in Delhi is that while in finishing third even this time, the distance between the second and the third has become more. AAP finishing second in all the seven Lok Sabha constituencies has further snatched the Congress' vote share while improving its own by almost four per cent. On the other hand, the BJP has poached not only on the AAP voters but also the Congress voters, increasing its vote share to a staggering 48 per cent from 33 per cent in the assembly elections. For the Congress, the rout in the national Capital is now complete. From winning all the seven seats in 2009, the Congress this poll season is at the receiving end of a complete role reversal. Leading the victory march for BJP were all first-time Members of Parliament-Harsh Vardhan from Chandni Chowk, Meenakshi Lekhi from New Delhi, Maheish Girri from East Delhi, Manoj Tiwari from North East Delhi, Pravesh Singh Sahib Verma from West Delhi, Ramesh Bidhuri from South Delhi and Udit Raj from North West Delhi. All the BJP candidates won their constituencies by over one lakh votes with Verma winning with over 2.68 lakh votes in the West Delhi Lok Sabha constituency. Vardhan defeated AAP's Ashutosh by over 1.35 lakh votes. And the list of Congress heavyweights who managed a dismal third place included Congress general secretary Ajay Maken, former Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit's son Sandeep, Union Ministers Krishna Tirath and Kapil Sibal and former Delhi Congress chief J P Agarwal. The results in Delhi mean that the high-voltage campaigning by Modi across the country has pumped in oxygen in the BJP cadre in Delhi. Not only are they willing to go an extra mile now, but see the formation of the BJP-led government at the Centre as the basic source of strength which would help it emerge as the party with majority in the next round of assembly elections. Reacting to the mandate, Vardhan said, "People have rejected AAP this time. AAP has been exposed. People had hopes from AAP but later they realised they have been fooled by the AAP. The fate of the Congress was sealed in last assembly elections when people rejected it. Congress has become synonymous with corruption and scams," added Vardhan. Unfortunately for AAP, it would now be time to face the reality. Although it has emerged as the second most-preferred party in Delhi after the BJP, it has lost a big chunk of its supporters, who somehow feel that Kejriwal would not be too good for a stable government in the state. For AAP it would be starting from the scratch without the goodwill of a large number of its earlier supporters whenever the elections are held for the assembly. The House has been in suspended animation since Kejriwal government's resignation in February. Congress slides to poor third |

NE Delhi: Tiwari strikes a chord with voters
New Delhi, May 16 He defeated former Delhi Congress chief and MP Jai Prakash Aggarwal by a margin of 1,44,084 votes. Prof Anand Kumar of the Aam Aadmi Party, which was completely routed from the national Capital, stood second with 4,52,041 votes, pushing the sitting Congress MP to the third position with 2,14,792 votes. "It is the blessings of the people of my constituency that have bought me this victory. My win is people's win. I would do my best to live up to their expectations," said Tiwari after winning the elections. Prof Anand who ended in a close fight with Tiwari said that party got less time to campaign for the elections. "We have managed to give tough fight and are in the second position in all the seats. |
Bidhuri puts up good show in South Delhi

In East Delhi, Maheish Girri credits Modi for win
New Delhi, May 16 He defeated his rival AAP's Rajmohan Gandhi and Congress' two-time MP Sandeep Dikshit. Gandhi bagged 3,81,739 votes while Dikshit got 2,03,240 votes. Girri gave the credit of his victory to his party and Narendra Modi and vowed to work for the betterment of the people of his constituency. "I want to thank people of East Delhi for the victory. I want to tell them that I will work for their betterment," said Girri. Gandhi, who finished second, was banking on AAP's strong support bank in East Delhi, but he failed to convert it into votes. Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit, who secured a little over 2 lakh votes, attributed anti-incumbency as a factor to his party's defeat. |
West Delhi: Verma emerges winner with 6.50 L votes
New Delhi, May 16 The AAP candidate secured 3,82,809 votes while the other two Jarnail Singhs, who contested as independent candidates, secured 84,722 and 5,960, respectively. The BJP candidate Pravesh Sahib Singh Verma secured 6,51,395 votes winning the election with a margin of 2,68,486 votes. Congress candidate and sitting MP Mahabal Mishra, who stood third in the election results list, secured 1, 93, 266 votes. In the last election, he had won the West Delhi seat with a heavy margin. His poor performance of not getting potable water for the voters and high rates of power were the consequences of his defeat in this LS election. |
