s 1.3 lakh snatched from farmer: Motorcycle-borne miscreants snatched a bag containing Rs 1.3 lakh from a farmer from outside Civil Hospital here today. The farmer, Aad Ram from Bhagsar village, was robbed when he was on his way to an autorickshaw stand after withdrawing money from Gaushala Road branch of Punjab National Bank. This is the third incident of snatching from bank customers in less than a year. None of the accused has been arrested in spite of scrutinising the CCTV footage.

School observes Women’s Empowerment Day
: A declamation contest was organised to mark Women Empowerment’s Day at SDP Senior Secondary School, Hazuri Road. Students highlighted the pertaining issues related to women empowerment. The role of women in society was discussed.

Youth booked for abduction:
The police have booked a youth on the charge of abducting and threatening a girl studying in a PTU centre here. SHO (city) Sarwan Singh Bal said the victim complained to the police Balwinder Singh alias Balli of Palahai Gate abducted her when she was on way to an examination centre in Nakodar. The accused was booked under Section Section 366 of the IPC.

CHANDIGARH

Local lads in national karate squad: Four local karate players have been selected to represent the nation in the eighth International Karate Championship to be held in Nepal from May 23 to 25. The tournament will be hosted by the Nepal Karate Federation, Member of Nepal Olympic Committee and Nepal Sports Council. Navdeep Sharma of Chandigarh Karate Club, Aditya of Mount Carmel School-47, Jaspreet Singh and Anupam both from Saupin’s School-32, are selected. The players will play under the supervision of Inderjeet Kumar (coach), Gurcharan (manager) and Ashwani (chief coach).

Election Department keeps strict vigil at counting centre: The media was not allowed to take still and video cameras inside the counting centre. Journalists were also not allowed to stay inside the hall for more then two-minutes.
