Six engineers suspended for poor night shelter conditions
New Delhi, May 5 The action was taken on the basis of a report submitted by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB), after an inspection of all the 181 night shelters on April 30
and May 1 by the engineering staff. The Lieutenant Governor, Najeeb Jung, had directed the DUSIB to carry out an inspection of all the shelters in the city. According to the report, water was not available in seven shelters located in Taimur Nagar, Neela Gumbad, Vasant Vihar Pahari and four in and around Sarai Kale Khan. "Taking cognisance of the laxity in supervision, six junior engineers and assistant engineers have been placed under suspension and showcause notices have been issued to the NGOs managing these shelters," said a
senior Delhi government official. The Delhi Jal Board has also been instructed to ensure the regular water supply to these shelters. "Water is the most critical element in summer, especially for those who are the most vulnerable and have to survive the heat by taking refuge in night shelters. There can be no laxity on this front," said the LG. |
BJP wants solution to 'chaotic' transport system
New Delhi, May 5 The government should also take action on it so that the fatal accidents on Delhi roads may be prevented. He said that the population of Delhi is more than 1.75 crore and Delhi is the second largest mega city. Its population is only 10 lakh less than the population of Mumbai. Public transport in Delhi includes Metro Rail, DTC buses, chartered buses, feeder buses, RTVs, auto, battery rickshaw, cycle rickshaw, local rail, buses from nearby states, etc. Due to chaotic transport system, the average death rate here is 6.7 persons per day. About 70 vehicles are stolen every day. Delhi BJP president Dr Harsh Vadhan said that due to large numbers of vehicles and encroachment, the footpaths have disappeared in the city, leading to accidents. Delhi needs a foolproof transport policy which has not been framed even after independence. Delhi has inter-state bus terminals like Maharana Pratap at Kashmere gate, Sarai Kale Khan and Anand Vihar ISBT. These are not sufficient for the large number of buses coming from outside states. There is no bus terminal for private buses. These buses are the cause of accident because these are run by "corrupt transport mafia". There should be provision to control this service also. |

Girl arrested for killing father in Rajouri Garden
New Delhi, May 5 The girl is identified as Kulvinder Kaur. Since the death of her mother about three years ago, she had been staying with her 56-year-old father, Daljeet Singh. She is unmarried. Her two married sisters are living with their husbands. A senior police officer said that Kaur has alleged that her father would often make inappropriate advances towards her. This allegedly prompted her to plot the brutal murder. Daljeet's body with deep wounds on his chest and head was found on April 30 at Ganda Nala Road, West Delhi. The body was wrapped in a bedsheet and blood was oozing from it. The victim's neck and legs were bound by cable wire. Blood-stained clothes and gloves were found with the body. "The accused had worn gloves while killing him and even while disposing of the body," said the officer. The police circulated photographs of the victim in a bid to find his relatives. On the evening of May 1, a relative of the victim was reportedly crying on seeing the victim's poster at the premises of Rajouri Garden police station. The police then interrogated Kaur and she claimed that her father who, was employed with a travel agency, had driven some tourists to Haridwar on the morning of April 30. The police suspected her when the travel agency denied that he went on a tour. The police visited her house and found blood stains at several places in a room despite her attempts to clean them up. She allegedly confessed to her crime. She and one of her male friends, Prince Sandhu (22), were arrested on Saturday while the other male friend, 23-year-old Ashok Sharma, was caught on Monday. Sandhu runs a tattoo salon in Geeta Colony, East Delhi. Sharma has a job of housekeeping at a showroom in West Gate Mall of Rajouri Garden. On the early hours of April 30, Kaur had opened the door of her house to give entry to her friends. "They overpowered Daljeet who was sleeping and attacked him with a cricket stump. To ensure that he does not survive the assault, they used a broken piece of glass to rip open his chest and remove the pacemaker," said the officer. Most of the things used in the crime, including a Toyota Innova car, have been recovered. The car had been abandoned at a deserted location in Uttam Nagar once the accused became aware that the police were closing in on them. |
CCTV cameras to be installed around IGI Airport
New Delhi, May 5 The police have held several meetings with DIAL, the airport operator, to expedite the process of the installation of about 100-odd CCTV cameras at the U-turns, passages and entry and exit points to the airport. "The latest meeting with DIAL was held at the end of April. We have decided the locations around the airport, where the cameras will be installed. DIAL will conduct the technical evaluation and plotting, meaning it will visit the locations, identify what type of cameras need to be installed and at what angle," said a police officer, privy to the details of the case. Sources said that the process is likely to take about 10 days. The CCTV cameras will also be an important security set-up for Aerocity, a commercial complex consisting of hotels and malls, according to police sources. The complex already consists of five constructed hotels that are running their services for customers, although four of them still need complete security clearances. Securing Aerocity is important for security agencies, because of its proximity to the IGI Airport's runway and a hangar of the Research and Analysis Wing, India's external intelligence agency. The main reason for installing the CCTV cameras is to help prevent crime around the airport. In October last year, a Scorpio SUV had intercepted a car near the airport. The car consisted of two courier company executives. The occupants of the SUV held the two persons hostage in the car, drove it to Mahipalpur near Gurgaon and forced them out of the vehicle. In February this year, four men indulged in a carjacking near the JW Marriott Hotel at Aerocity. During the next month, four persons posing as passengers near Terminal-3 of the airport hired a private cab. They forced the driver out of the car near Mahipalpur and fled with it. The three cases have remained unsolved. Some of the places where the CCTV cameras will be installed include Central Spine Road, Mahipalpur Chowk, the Cargo Terminal of the IGI airport and the Customs House. These are locations where there are important entry and exit points to the airport and where there is also heavy footfall of people. "The focus behind this project is to have these areas under constant surveillance. In case of an emergency or if a suspicious person is noticed on the cameras, the members of the central control room, where the cameras will be connected, will activate the quick reaction teams of security personnel and deploy them to the affected area," explained the sources. The idea for implementing such a security plan was made in 2010. It was strengthened when a joint team of Delhi Police, a Ministry of Civil Aviation official and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), the two agencies responsible for the security of the IGI Airport, went abroad in March. When they returned to Delhi, there were discussions on the security arrangements of airports abroad and IGI Airport. "The Ministry of Civil Aviation decided to adopt the security set-up of the San Diego and Amsterdam airports for IGI Airport," said the sources. |
DUTA hails High Court verdict on pensionary relief
New Delhi, May 5 The DUTA will write to the UGC for early implementation of the pension scheme, especially for the teachers who have retired in the meantime and have not been getting any pension, informed DUTA members. In the case of the teachers who have not got any relief from the court in this matter, the DUTA will appeal to the UGC/Ministry of Human Resource and Development to take a humanitarian view of the matter, and grant a one-time option to them. "The financial implication will be negligible since it is a small number of persons and the amount accumulated in their CPF account would be returned and could be used to make the payment for pension," maintained the teachers' body. Congratulating the teachers on a long and arduous legal battle to get what was due to them, the DUTA resolved to stand by all teachers, including those who were appointed after 2004, in the struggle for a proper pension scheme and retirement benefits. |

AAP workers detained for candlelight protest
New Delhi, May 5 The late activist was allegedly burnt alive as he had waged a battle against those involved in land encroachment and grabbing. According to the AAP, this is nothing but a reflection of the poor law and order situation in UP. "We want a CBI enquiry into the case as the UP police are investigating the case as an accident and not a murder. We have gathered to raise the security concerns of RTI activists who are putting their life at stake for justice. The RTI is an empowering law and becoming a road to death. We want a detailed investigation to the matter," said AAP member Amit Mishra. The fact that the late activist Sharma, who is allegedly murdered in Greater Noida area of Gautam Budh Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, last week, had given a written complaint to the police on April 29 about the threats to his life which he was receiving from the land mafia also hints at the murder theory. However, the police are reluctant to investigate the case on that line, said AAP activists. |
