New Delhi, May 9
Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung today held a review meeting of principal secretaries, secretaries and HODs of Delhi government for assessing the functioning of the departments like Public Works Department, Health, Revenue, Irrigation and Flood Control, Agriculture Marketing Board, Industries and Delhi Transport Corporation.

During the meeting, the Secretary (PWD) said the contractors personally supervise the works on the field. Eleven corridors have been identified to carry out the encroachment drive. Fifty per cent of desilting has been done. The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) is being informed of the water and sewerage leakage points.

Giving the details of the meeting, the Secretary (Health) said there are 36 hospitals under the Health department out of which six are constituted as societies and are functioning relatively better than the remaining 30. Eight teams have been constituted for the regular inspection of these 30 hospitals.

The LG suggested a mechanism in consultation with PWD to reduce the downtime of responding to local faults, especially in critical areas like operation theatre.

"The role of MCDs in the upkeep of hospitals be examined carefully. Arrangements should be made with ambulance services," said the LG.

He directed the officials to send daily reports regarding water, electricity and drainage blockage.

DU don held for ‘Maoist links'
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, May 9
Delhi University professor G N Saibaba was arrested by the Maharashtra police's anti-naxal unit today for his alleged links with Maoists apparently while he was at Daulat Ram College on examination duty.

The arrest of the English teacher comes after questioning him for more than four times in the last six months and this has led to protest from Delhi University teachers who have condemned the police action.

"This is a gross violation of his basic human rights.... This is an attempt to stifle voices of dissent and suppress those who have been vocal against injustice and oppression," said DUTA representatives.

Prof. Saibaba's wife, Vasantha, accompanied by DU teachers, lodged a missing person complaint at the Maurice Nagar police station an hour after he was picked. She said, "Even this time, the police have acted without any prior information and abducted Dr Saibaba and he confirmed that he was being taken to Nagpur by the Gadchiroli police. Clearly there is an attempt to frame him up."

The Maharashtra police have apprehended Saibaba on charges of allegedly being a member of a banned terrorist outfit (CPI-Maoist), providing logistics and helping in the recruitment for the group.
