NDA set to get over 300 seats, says Ravi Shankar
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, May 4
Senior BJP leader and party's national spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad claimed that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is going to get more than 300 seats in the Lok Sabha elections while the BJP itself is set to cross the half-way mark.

"I have been touring the whole country for election campaign and could see a great level of enthusiasm among the people for the BJP and Narendra Modi. I can assure you that the results on May 16 will be surprise everyone," said Ravi Shankar while addressing a press conference here today.

He said the BJP was going to win all five Lok Sabha seats in Uttarakhand. He took a dig at Chief Minister Harish Rawat over his alleged statement that Narendra Modi was his number one enemy.

Asked whether the BJP would try to destabilise the Uttarakhand government which is already running on a wafer-thin majority, Ravi Shankar said, "We will not try to topple the government but we cannot comment on the possible move of the PDF, which is supporting the Congress-led government, after the Lok Sabha results are declared."

He said Congress leader Kapil Sibal's statement that Narendra Modi was responsible for the ongoing violence in Assam was the result of utter desperation and sense of defeat in the Congress. "The Congress is heading towards its worst defeat since Independence," he added.

Asked about the Central government's decision to appoint a commission of inquiry in the 'Snoopgate' case, Ravi Shankar said, "The UPA government was desperate to name a judge to head the 'Snoopgate' panel and now it has found a retired judge from the Allahabad High Court, who was seeking the Congress ticket from Varanasi." "The Congress motto is 'suffering India and insecure India' while the BJP will work towards building a resurgent India," claimed Ravi Shankar.

Credible threat to Cong-led govt if BJP comes to power at Centre
SMA Kazmi
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, may 4
Chief Minister Harish Rawat's warning to the BJP against any attempt to topple his government if a Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government is formed at the Centre indicates that the results of the Lok Sabha elections will have a direct bearing on the fate of the Congress-led state government.

Harish Rawat, while addressing an election meeting at Pithoragarh yesterday, warned the BJP against destabilising his government after the Lok Sabha elections. He said if the BJP toppled his government in the state after the Lok Sabha elections, it too would suffer badly. “In such a case the BJP will be wiped out of the state for at least 25 years,” he warned.

Speculation is ripe about the fate of the Congress-led state government, the survival of which is dependent on the support of the Peoples’ Democratic Front ( PDF), a group of seven legislators. Three of them, namely Mantri Prashad Naithani, Harish Chander Durgapal and Dinesh Dhanai, are Independent legislators while Surender Rakesh, Haridass and Sarvat Karim Ansari belong to the BSP. The Seventh member of the PDF, Pritam Singh Panwar, belongs to the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal.

Interestingly, the BSP has sacked legislators Surender Rakesh, who is a minister in the Harish Rawat Cabinet, and Haridass for alleged anti-party activities. Both of them are virtually with the Congress. However, the Congress faces a threat from its own legislators, including Independents, who could side with the BJP to topple the state government.

The threat to the state government has increased following Pauri Garhwal MP Satpal Maharaj joining the BJP. Mantri Prasad Naithani, state Education Minister and convener of the PDF, is a Satpal Maharaj supporter. At least three Congress legislators, including Tourism Minister Amrita Rawat, wife of Satpal Maharaj, owe allegiance to him.

There is a possibility that if the Congress fares badly in the Lok Sabha elections and Narendra Modi takes over as the next Prime Minister of the country, the BJP could topple the state government with the help of the PDF legislators. Many BJP leaders have also hinted at this possible future scenario.

Harish Rawat is also well aware of the possibilities and has warned the BJP against any such move. Harish Rawat took over as Chief Minister on February 1 this year. He has to enter the state Assembly within six months.

Harish Rawat, who is singlehandedly fighting the Narendra Modi factor in the Lok Sabha elections, has another hard job at hand of saving his own government after the elections.

Prediction

* There is a possibility that if the Congress fares badly in the Lok Sabha elections and Narendra Modi takes over as the next Prime Minister of the country, the BJP could topple the state government with the help of the PDF legislators. Many BJP leaders have also hinted at this possible future scenario.

Modi desperate to grab power: Sonia
Sandeep Rawat
Tribune News Service

Roorkee, May 4
Congress president Sonia Gandhi said at a rally in Roorkee today that BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi was behaving and speaking arrogantly nowadays because he was suffering from 'fever of power'. He was impatient and desperate to grab power at the Centre. Modi had also addressed a massive rally in Roorkee yesterday.

Sonia arrived at the Litho Press Ground two hours late as a 30,000 plus crowd braved scorching heat and waited patiently to hear the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson.

Sonia said that the way Narendra Modi was behaving and arrogantly speaking these days suggested that the "fever of power" had gone to his head though two phases of the General Elections were still left.

She added Modi did not know that boasting or media blitzkrieg won’t make him Prime Mininster and it were the common people who decide the fate of the candidates.

“Modi is roaming throughout the country and speaking as if the election results have been declared. He seems to be impatient to grab power. He wants to enjoy the benefits of power rather that caring for the people. The people know everything: Who is development oriented and who banks on divisive politics," said Sonia.

She added this Lok Sabha elections were a ‘clash of ideologies’. "While on the one side was Congress which has a liberal and pan-India outlook catering to all segments of society, on the other the BJP's ideology is communal and divisive and based on hatred. It is banking on one man whose thinking is quite narrow," he said.

Sonia said the Congress-led UPA government launched several social schemes for the Dalits, women and the poor like the Food Security Bill, the Land Acquisition Bill, MNREGA, Right To Information, and assistance to girl child for education in the 10- year rule of the UPA.

She appreciated the speedy relief and rehabilitation work done by the Uttarakhand government after the natural disaster and said the Central government had assisted the state government in every possible way.

The UPA Chairperson said the portals of the Gangotri, Yamunotri and Kedarnath shrines opened today while the Badrinath shrine would open tomorrow showed the work done by the state government to resume the Char Dham Yatra.

Chief Minister Harish Rawat spoke about the development works being carried out by the Congress-led state government and the rehabilitation works in flood-ravaged regions of Garhwal.

Congress candidate from Haridwar Renuka Rawat, Uttarakhand election in charge Rajeev Shukla, state Congress president Yashpal Arya, Sports Minister Dinesh Aggarwal, former Women Commission chairperson Dr Santosh Chauhan, Roorkee legislator Pradeep Batra, Khanpur legislator Kunwar Pranav Singh Champion, Piran Kaliyar MLA Furkan Ahmed and other party leaders were present at the rally.

Hema Malini pitches in for NaMo as PM
Seeks votes for Mala Raj Lakshmi at Thatyur
Tribune News Service

Mussoorie, May 4
Actor-turned-politician Hema Malini sought votes for the BJP candidate from Tehri, Mala Raj Lakshmi Shah, during a public rally at Thatyur, Tehri, today.

Hema Malini began her address by reciting a shloka (hymn) from Bhagwad Gita. She said corruption under the Congress-led UPA government had reached its extreme and the time had come to get rid of such a government that had failed to deliver.

Hema Malini said the Modi wave had gripped the entire country. "Rampant corruption and an increase in crime against women during the tenure of the Congress has forced the people to remove the party from power and give a chance to Narendra Modi as Prime Minister," she said.

The BJP leader said the country needed an able Prime Minister who could take it on the path of
development.

Addressing women voters, who were present in a large number at the rally venue, she said if the Modi government came to power at the Centre, it would herald a new era of growth and development.

She said to strengthen the hands of Narendra Modi, the victory of Tehri candidate Mala Raj Lakshmi Shah was very important, so that she could take up women-related issues in Parliament.

Hema Malini also praised the Gujarat model of development and said a similar model would be implemented in Uttarakhand if the BJP came to power.

Earlier, senior BJP leader Manujendar Shah, while reacting to the charges of being from the royal family, said the Congress too had people from the royal families such as Digvijay Singh and Jyotiraditya Madhavrao Scindia. He said his family had been serving the constituency without any charges of corruption for the past nearly 1,500 years.

Addressing the gathering, national BJP secretary Trivendar Singh Rawat alleged the UPA government had failed to provide relief to the victims of the natural disaster that struck the state last year.

38 teams leave for distant polling booths in Dharchula
BD Kasniyal

Pithoragarh, May 4
Thirty eight polling parties from Pithoragarh district and eight from Bageshwar district left for their respective polling booths today, election office sources said.

The polling parties began their journey from the Pithoragarh district election office to the polling booths set up in the upper reaches of Dharchula and Munsiyari subdivisions in the Dharchula Assembly segment. “These polling parties will have to walk 5 km to 27 km to reach the polling booths a day before the elections on May 7,” said HC Semwal, District Election Officer, Pithoragarh.

Semwal added the polling parties had been instructed to check the electronic voting machines (EVM) and understand their sealing process as soon as they reach the booths. “We have also instructed the security forces to maintain calm and peace during the elections and cooperate and behave properly with the voters during the polling. If any untoward incident occurs, they should inform about it to the presiding officer and the sector magistrate,” said Semwal.

Eight polling parties werer dispatched from the Bageshwar election office today. These parties would have to walk 5 km to 18 km to reach the polling booths in the Kapkot Assembly segment. “We will dispatch 63 polling parties to distant booths on May 5, while remaining 253 polling parties will start their journey on May 6,” said RS Manral, District Election Officer, Bageshwar.

In Champawat district, 39 election parties deputed to polling booths in distant places in the district would begin their journey tomorrow.

Sale of election publicity material dull this time

Meanwhile, the sale of election publicity material has failed to gain momentum in the state this year. Although the Election Commission is holding voter awareness drives across the state, voters as well as political workers seem to be least interested in buying the publicity material of a particular party.

Bhuwan Joshi, who was made in charge of publicity material during the Congress rally in Pithoragarh last week, said, "The sale of publicity material remained dull this time. No party worker came forward to purchase any poll-related item during the rally."

Ashok Lohani, a BJP worker in Almora, said," Party workers buy badges or other poll-related material only when some senior leader or star campaigner comes to the district.”

A Congress worker, who had installed a makeshift shop during the Chief Ministers’ rally here on May 3 to sell publicity material, said despite a huge gathering at the rally, his shop could not attract buyers.

“It seems the youth do not want to brand loyalty with a particular candidate,” said Khimraj Joshi, a Congress youth worker in Pithoragarh.

Successful last time, Yashpal Arya has a tough job this elections
SMA Kazmi
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, May 4
Yashpal Arya, president of the Uttarakhand Congress, has a topugh job at hand in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections in the state.

Yashpal Arya, a Dalit leader has an impeccable record of winning all five Lok Sabha seats of the state in the last general elections and then leading the party to a slender win the assembly polls in Januray 2012 to oust the state BJP government. However, in the forthcoming Lok sabha poll, the ruling Congress is facing a tough electoral battle on May 7.

Arya told The Tribune that the battle was tough but claimed that the Congress had taken the challenge. He hoped that it would perform well on all the five Lok Sabha seats. Asked about the double anti-incumbency faced by the party at the central as well as the state level, Yashpal Arya said that although the rising inflation did annoy the voters but the flagship schemes launched by the Congress led UPA government at the centre has helped the poorer sections of the society who would stand by the party.

Asked whether a Narendra Modi wave is sweeping the country and the state, Yashpal Arya denied that any such thing was happening. “Yes, it is a fact that the BJP has pumped in a lot of money and used the audio-visual mediums to project the larger than life image of their Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi but it would not help the party in Uttarakhand. The voters of Uttarakhand know very well the works done by the Congress governments in the state and the centre,” he said.

Asked about the alleged failure of the state government in providing relief and rehabilitation to the disaster affected people which is being raised by the opposition BJP in its election campaign, Yashpal Arya answered that the allegations are false and have fallen flat before the polling day of May 7. “The BJP leaders have painted a bleak picture of the disaster. They have been claiming that there is no possibility of starting the Char Dham Yatra on time. But their allegations have proved wrong as the yatra has started very well and a large number of pilgrims from all over the country have reached the Gangotri, Yamunotri and Kedarnath dhams at the start of the yatra,” he said.

Arya said that the BJP and its Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi did indulge in a slander campaign against Uttarakhand Congress government on disaster relief. “I can say it with confidence that the state government with active help from the Central government has done a lot to provide succor, relief and rehabilitation to the disaster affected population. The construction of damaged roads is a gigantic work and weather is a big factor but still we are able to repair and open most of the important roads in record time,” he added.

He said that the negative publicity on char dham yatra by BJP would affect them as people in garhwal region are economically dependent on the yatra.

The state Congress Chief was hopeful that the traditional voters of Congress namely dalits and Muslims would vote for the Congress along with cross section of the society for the overall development of the state and the country.

Garhwali, Kumaoni dialects no election issue even this time
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, May 4
The endangered Garhwali and Kumaoni dialects have never been an election issue in Uttarakhand but politicians use them profusely while campaigning in the elections in hill districts of the state.

UNESCO Atlas of The World Languages in 2008 had put the Garhwali and Kumaoni dialects in the endangered category that face the risk of getting extinct in future. But political parties in Uttarakhand had never shown any interest towards conserving the two dialects.

Pauri Garhwal MP Satpal Maharaj had on couple of occasions tried to raise the issue in the Lok Sabha seeking the inclusion of the Garhwali and Kumaoni dialects in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. However, his efforts failed to yield the desired results.

Dr Shobha Ram Sharma said the Uttarakhand dialects had been a victim of political apathy. "A politician easily manages to break the ice with a stranger through the medium of a dialect. However, these politicians once elected seldom work for promoting these dialects," said Sharma referring to the Garhwali and Kumaoni dialects.

He added while politicians from the Garhwal and Kumaon regions used these dialects to their advantage while campaigning in hill areas, they showed little commitment towards conserving them. "The number of Garhwali and Kumaoni speaking people has decreased sharply in the last decades and the older generation has not been able to pass on the legacy of the dialects to the next generation," he added.

Padma Shri Dr Shekhar Pathak said it was due to the failure of the political leadership that the two dialects had failed to find a place in primary education. He added the state political leadership should work towards promoting these dialects.

Dissolution of Delhi govt not to affect AAP prospects: Bhushan
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, May 4
Prashant Bhushan, a senior Supreme Court lawyer and member of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), today launched a scathing attack on the Congress-led UPA and the BJP-led NDA and said voters did not have any choice except voting for the AAP candidates in the Lok Sabha elections.

Bhushan while talking to mediapersons here today said BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi was depending on a propaganda campaign to woo voters.

He said the Gujarat model of development could not be implemented anywhere in the country as it lacked various important issues.

Bhushan alleged the Uttarakhand government misused natural resources for carrying out development activities in the mountainous areas of the state.

He said AAP would focus on good governance, corruption-free government and keep a tab on the rising prices of essential commodities if the party wins all seats in the state in the Lok Sabha elections on May 7.

Modi can’t work for welfare of country, says Cong leader
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, May 4
Uttarakhand Congress Task Force convener Yogendra Khanduri has accused BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi of politicising the disaster issue.

In a statement issued here today, Yogendra Khanduri said the Congress had never used this issue to serve its personal interests while Modi was doing exactly the opposite. He said Narendra Modi himself during last year's natural disaster had claimed rescuing 15,000 stranded Gujarat pilgrims during the Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand which evidently proves that he cannot work for the welfare of the entire country. He said the Congress government in Uttarakhand had shown all sincerity towards relief and rehabilitation works post disaster.

Khanduri said Modi in his speeches in Uttarakhand had been accusing the Congress government of indulging in corruption but seldom mentions about corruption that took place when the BJP governments were in power in the state. He reminded that Modi had sold Gujarat to industrialists and wanted to do the same in the country.
