Verma writes to ICC to stop Srinivasan
New Delhi, May 4
The Cricket Association of Bihar (CAB) secretary Aditya Verma has written to the ICC president, Alan Isaac, urging the parent body to stop N Srinivasan from attending the ICC Executive Board meeting as its first chairman, next month. In his letter, Verma has alleged that ICC has kept its “mouth shut” on IPL “scams” and should stop Srinivasan from attending its meetings till the final verdict is announced by the Supreme Court. Verma questioned the ICC’s decision of not inquiring into the IPL issues. “As per the ICC conduct rules, if any player’s name comes up in any illegal acts, it is the ICC’s duty to investigate. But I am sorry to say, the ICC asn’t shown any interest till date,” said Verma. Verma also sarcastically commented that ICC has now become ‘India Cement Cricket’. “Has the ICC become India Cement Cricket?” he asked. — PTI

DD trim their squad
New Delhi, May 4
The Delhi Daredevils have decided to temporarily trim their squad of 23 players to 20 with three of the domestic uncapped players, including local boy Milind Kumar, being sent home. Apart from Milind, the other two players who have gone back home are Haryana off-spinner Jayant Yadav and young Karnataka medium pacer HS Sharath. “Milind, Sharath and Jayant have gone home for the time being. If they are required, they would be called back by the franchise,” an IPL source in the know of things told PTI. “Sending back a few players in the middle of the tournament has been a common practice among the IPL franchise for the past few years,” the source added. Normally it is done in order to bring down the number of players to a level where the support staff find it easier to manage during training session. — PTI

AB blinder snatches victory from jaws of defeat for RCB

Bangalore, May 4
AB de Villiers produced one of the most devastating Twenty20 innings, smashing 89 off just 41 balls, as Royal Challengers Bangalore pulled off a sensational four-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad in a dramatic IPL match here today.

De Villiers butchered Hyderabad bowlers with six fours and eight sixes as he single-handedly took Bangalore to victory after Bangalore suffered early jolts after fine bowling show by Karn Sharma (3/17) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2/16).

Chasing 156 for six, Bangalore seemingly lost the plot as they were reduced to 59 for four in the 11th over. They sank deeper into trouble when Yuvraj Singh was dismissed, leaving the side stuttering at 95 for five and needing 61 from 5.3 overs.

But de Villiers took on from there and played a memorable innings to take Bangalore to 158 for six with one ball to spare. He stitched a 57-run stand for the sixth wicket with Mitchell Starc who could score just five.

In the process, de Villiers dented the reputation of his South African compatriot fast bowler Dale Steyn who bled 39 runs without a wicket in his four overs.

Bangalore needed 28 runs runs off the last two overs. But de Villiers hammered Steyn for 24 runs in the 19th over with three scintillating sixes and a four, which turned the tables on Hyderabad, leaving the home side just four runs to score in the last over bowled Pathan.

Fittingly, de Villiers hit the winning runs, a four off Pathan, to take Bangalore to their first victory at home in IPL 7 in front of wildly cheering crowd at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.

This was Bangalore’s third win in IPL 7 and they are now at the fourth spot with six points from six matches.

Earlier, David Warner’s fighting knock of 61 off 49 balls helped Sunrisers Hyderabad post a challenging 155 for six. Warner hit four boundaries and three sixes as he steadied Hyderabad innings, along with Shikhar Dhawan (37 off 36 balls) with a 62-run partnership for third wicket. — PTI

Wrestling federation, where are the docs?
After Geeta’s injury, Yogeshwar concerned that absence of WFI doctor can hurt men’s team too
Sabi Hussain
Tribune News Service

Who will medically advise us in case of an injury? Who will guide us in the absence of a proper doctor and physio? Geeta did not get proper medical advice and look what happened to her. Had her injury been detected in time, she would have participated in the CWG and Asian Games, but now she is out of these competitions. —Yogeshwar Dutt, olympic bronze medallist

New Delhi, may 4
A major disaster is waiting to strike Indian wrestling in the absence of proper medical advice and guidance. It’s a little less than three months to go before the start of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and four-and-a-half months for the Asian Games in Incheon, but the nation’s senior wrestlers are without the services of a well-qualified doctor and a physio, in both men’s and women’s section.

The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and the Sports Authority of India (SAI) have not learnt from the episode of Haryana grappler Geeta Phogat, who had her 2014 CWG and Asian Games dreams shattered when an injury and the subsequent surgery ruled her out of the two quadrennial events.

In the absence of a specialist doctor provided by the WFI or SAI, in the absence of proper medical advice, Geeta was denied a chance to bring more glory to the nation. Geeta suffered an ACL Grade 3 tear during a training camp last month. She continued her training and aggravated the injury, and had to undergo a major surgery at a Mumbai hospital on April 17. Hers was a shocking case of negligence, lack of professional advice and indifference on the part of the WFI.

No one to guide

Hurt and pained by Geeta’s plight, it was the turn of one of Indian wrestling’s poster boys, London Olympics bronze medallist Yogeshwar Dutt, to remind the WFI that a doctor must be hired for the wrestlers on an urgent basis.

“Who will medically advise us in case of an injury? Who will guide us in the absence of a proper doctor and physio? Geeta did not get proper medical advice and look what happened to her. Had her injury been detected in time, she would have participated in the CWG and Asian Games, but now she is out of these competitions,” said Yogeshwar.

“The men’s wrestling team does not have a well-qualified doctor and physio who can help the grapplers with their injuries. Both the federation and SAI don’t have good doctors. We need them. Earlier, we had a doctor thanks to our previous sponsor (Mittal Champions Trust). Our current sponsor (Jindal Sports) has provided us a private physio, but we have not been provided a doctor by the federation. The federation needs to understand that wrestling is one sport in which you suffer regular injuries,” he added.

Didn’t get proper advice

Talking about his own knee injury, which posed a serious threat to his wrestling career, Yogeshwar said, “I had got injured in 2009 as well, before my knee injury. At that time also, the doctor did not advise me properly on my knee condition. I continued with my practice in the absence of proper medical guidance.”

Wrestlers like Sushil Kumar and Yogeshwar might have access to good medical facilities and mental trainers largely due to their medal-winning exploits at the international level and support from private sponsors, but what about the upcoming grapplers who are the next big hopes of the country?

The WFI and SAI have been engaged in a blame game over the issue. The federation has maintained that it’s the responsibility of the SAI to appoint the doctor, while the SAI has always reasoned that a sports federation can always appoint doctors on its own and get their salaries from the sports body.

“Ultimately it’s the wrestlers who are suffering. We have a physio, but he is not of that level which we require for international competitions. In such a scenario, athletes would not be able to give their 100 per cent. If you get injured while competing or training, you need proper medical advice,” Yogeshwar added.

Can Dhoni lead in all three formats? Fleming not sure

New Delhi, May 4
Chennai Super Kings coach Stephen Fleming feels that Mahendra Singh Dhoni is good enough to continue as a captain for three years but the New Zealander is not sure “whether he can continue playing all three formats” for that long a time.

“I haven’t spoken to him on this issue. He is in fine shape and if he is fit, he can continue to lead for another good three to four years. Having said that, I don’t know how long he will be playing all three formats. It’s pretty hard as India have such a tight schedule,” Fleming said during an interaction here on Saturday. Fleming has been the coach of CSK for six seasons now and shares a great rapport with Dhoni.

“What I try to provide MS is with two months of enjoyment, so that he can come into the Chennai side having taken a break from the Indian team. He loves his game and looks pretty comfortable winning games for Chennai consistently,” Fleming said.

But Fleming, who captained New Zealand close to a decade, feels that an international skipper has a shelf life of four years and beyond that can create some problems. “Look, Dhoni and Graeme Smith has been exceptions but I feel that an international captain has a shelf life of four years. After that it is easier to get back as another normal cricketer,” Fleming added.

“If you have been the leader for too long, then it becomes difiicult once you leave the job. You tend to miss the decision making authority and stuff like that. In fact, I faced similar problems after I quit captaincy,” he said.

Virat, Pujara key men for India in England: KP

New Delhi: Kevin Pietersen says the performance Indian batsmen, especially Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara, will be critical to the side`s chances during its lengthy tour of England, come this summer.

Pietersen played a key role during the last series in 2011 when he set the tone for England’s 4-0 whitewash with a double century in the first Test at Lord`s, three years back.

Terming India’s batting line-up as one of the best in world, Pietersen said: “It’s going to be a fantastic series. England are rebuilding, while India have got incredible batting talent. They have got Pujara, Virat and Murali Vijay and all of them have the technique to score runs in England. It will be important that they score runs otherwise it will be problem.” — PTI

Amir’s hard punches land him the welterweight title

LAS VEGAS, MAy 4
Amir Khan immediately shifted his focus towards Floyd Mayweather after earning a lopsided decision victory over the dangerous Luis Collazo. Many observers feared Khan had bitten off more than he could chew by agreeing to face former world champion and veteran welterweight campaigner Collazo on his bow in the 147lb division. Yet the Bolton fighter —whose last bout was in April 2013, when he struggled badly against the lightly regarded Julio Diaz —showed his class in Las Vegas by knocking down the rugged southpaw three times en route to a unanimous decision victory.

Khan was in no way flattered by two judges scoring the bout 119-104, with the third having it 117-106, as his superior hand speed and much-improved defence frustrated Collazo, who had won his last four fights, including a shock second-round knockout win over highly-rated Victor Ortiz last time out.

“It was tough because Collazo was very awkward, but we pulled it together and came out with the win,” Khan said. “It was a tough fight to debut at 147 pounds after a 13-month lay-off. Not many fighters would take a fight like this. “I’ve got a lot of respect for him, he’s one of those guys who makes everyone look bad but I’m lucky to have had a great performance against him.

“I knew it was going to be a war, it was going to be a hard, tough fight. I’m glad it’s over and now we’re going to move onto bigger and better things.” — The Independent

Delhi look to topple Chennai applecart
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, May 4
Chennai Super Kings will look to continue their winning run when they take on struggling Delhi Daredevils at the Ferozshah Kotla Stadium on Monday. Two-time champions CSK are perched at the top with five wins from six outings, while Delhi have just two wins from as many games so far. In their first home match this season, Daredevils were thrashed by Rajasthan Royals by seven wickets and it looks a tall order for the Kevin Pietersen-led side to topple the applecart of their southern rivals.

Delhi would look for revenge against CSK for their 93 run loss in last encounter. For Delhi, the two men who look in good touch are South African imports Quinton de Kock and JP Duminy. Duminy is the team’s top run-scorer with 212 runs, while de Kock has proved himself in each of his three matches.

However, the poor form of middle-order has been a worry as none of the other batsmen, including former England captain Pietersen, have looked effective.

Delhi have also struggled in the bowling department too, as they lack a genuine spinner. They may have an exciting young talent in Shahbaz Nadeem, but the absence of other good tweaker has hurt them.

CSK, on the other hand, have plenty to show in their batting line-up. Openers Dwayne Smith and Brendon McCullum have taken the bowlers to the cleaners. The presence of big hitters Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja down the order gives them the firepower to put up mammoth scores. In the bowling department, they have pace spearhead Mohit Sharma, who is currently the leading wicket-taker with 11 scalps from six matches.

Gangjee has a field day
Finishes 4th after shooting 65 in final round;
Lahiri finishes tied 6th
Shona A Singh

Chandigarh, May 4
Rahil Gangjee and Airban Lahiri finished fourth and tied sixth respectively at The Championship at Laguna National that concluded in Singapore today. Rahil carded a seven-under 65 to finish sole fourth at 19-under 269 while Anirban carded a six-under 66 in the final round to finish the tournament with a total of 17-under 271.

The day however belonged to Felipe Aguilar who carded a ten-under 62 to win the $1.5 million tournament by one stroke after he holed his second shot for an eagle on the 18th hole.

The Indians impressed with their dominance all week. Rahil, who carded rounds of 66, 65, 71, shot a bogey-free final round with birdies on the eighth, ninth and birdies on the last five holes.

“The last few holes went by in a hurry. My heart was beating fast on the 17th tee when I hit that six-iron. It ended on the edge of the green and did not move from there. I kept myself in it and it was a bonus that the putt went in. I hit the ball much better today. My driver was misbehaving yesterday. Overall I am really very happy. It is really difficult to stay focussed out there. You get more and more tired towards the end of the round,” said Rahil, who took home a cheque for $75,000.

“This is my best finish so far and my best score ever. It’s been a long one month playing under this gruesome weather. I am very happy that I am going home now. My game has been pretty good. I think it’s my physical ability to carry on which has been tested this week. My putting has been very good but I haven’t hit it so well,” he added.

Lahiri enjoyed a bogey-free 66 as well with birdies on the second, ninth, 11th, 13th, 15th and 16th holes.

“I’m very happy with the way I played this week. I have been playing very well and it’s nice to finish with a solid round. The course was set up for scoring this week so you had to go out there and make the birdies. I didn’t make enough the first couple of days so it was difficult to catch up. I wasn’t especially aggressive today. I like to play aggressively and go for my shots,” said Lahiri who will move up further in the World Rankings after this week.

“This week was obviously an important week for me so I am glad I played solid all week. Everything seems to be working out for me. My putter was cold last week but it came to my rescue this week. It’s been good overall so I am very happy with my game right now,” added Anirban, who earned $48,750.

SSP Chowrasia was not far behind and finished the week well. He made eight birdies, a bogey and a double bogey to shoot a five-under 67 and finish tied 11th with a total of 14-under 274.

However, Jeev Milkha Singh and Chiragh Kumar carded 72 and 74 respectively, both finishing at three-under 285 and tied for 64th place.

Chelsea held 0-0 by Norwich City

London, May 4
Chelsea and Norwich City were left hanging on to their respective targets by their fingertips after their Premier League match ended goalless at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. Chelsea's slim hopes of winning the title are all but over as they now need to win their last match at relegated Cardiff City next Sunday and hope that both the top two, Manchester City and Liverpool pick up no more than one point from their last two matches.

Manchester City lead the standings with a superior goal difference from Liverpool with both on 80 points from 36 matches. Chelsea have 79 points from 37. Norwich can only avoid joining already relegated Cardiff City and Fulham in the Championship next season if they beat Arsenal next week and Sunderland lose both of their remaining fixtures.

In the day's earlier match a first half header from Olivier Giroud gave Arsenal a 1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion in a largely uneventful end-of-season stroll in the sun at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal, who have 76 points, will now finish fourth, ensuring them of a 17th successive season in the Champions League next season.

Atletico title hopes dented by shock defeat at Levante

Madrid: Atletico Madrid squandered a chance to all-but wrap up their first La Liga title since 1996 when they crashed to a surprise 2-0 defeat at Levante on Sunday.

Victory for Atletico in Valencia would have meant they needed only a win at home to Malaga next weekend to secure top spot and render their final match at Barcelona the following week irrelevant. However, an own goal from Filipe Luis in the seventh minute and a neat finish from David Barral 21 minutes from time meant Atletico failed to take advantage of Barca's 2-2 draw at home to Getafe on Saturday.

With two games left, Atletico lead on 88 points, three ahead of second-placed Barca. Real Madrid, on 82 points in third, have two games in hand. — Reuters

Juventus win third successive title as Roma lose

Rome: Juventus won a third consecutive Serie A title without playing on Sunday when AS Roma, the only team who could catch them, capitulated to a 4-1 defeat at lowly Catania. Roma, who had bravely kept their challenge going by winning their last nine games, inexplicably produced one of their worst performances of the season against the Sicilian strugglers. Mariano Izco stunned Roma by scoring twice in a six-minute spell in the first half and, although Francesco Totti pulled one back, it was only a lull in the storm. Gonzalo Bergessio extended Catania's lead in the 56th minute and Pablo Barrientos fired a fourth. The defeat left Roma eight points behind Juventus, who host Atalanta on Monday with only two games left to play.

Indian women finish last

Chandigarh, May 4
The Indian women’s hockey team lost to Scotland to finish last in the Champions Challenge 1 in Glasgow today. The Indian team, which lost all its previous matches in the tournament, finished eighth after going down 3-4 to the host team in a tight match. Both teams played exciting hockey but none could score in the first half.

In a sparkling second half, Scotland took the lead through Vikki Bunce in the 44th minute. India then responded quickly to level the game and then scored two more to take a 3-1 lead.

Neha Goyal equalised in the 46th minute through a penalty corner. Within five minutes, Lilima Minz scored the second and Navneet Kaur’s 63rd- minute strike seemed to have taken the game away from the hosts.

But Scotland fought back as Ailsa Wyllie scored in the 64th minute and then Bunce levelled the score in the 67th minute. She converted a penalty stroke, flicking it high into the net. With the momentum on their side, Scotland got the winner in the 68th minute through captain Linda Clement. She received the ball on the edge of the circle and her reverse-stick shot went under goalkeeper Savita.

Dirkie Chamberlain scored in the 67th minute to lead South Africa to a 1-0 win over Spain, finishing third in the tournament.
