parkash utsav of guru ravi das Tribune News Service
Jalandhar, February 13 Traffic at Nakodar Chowk, Ravidass Chowk, the road towards Model House and the road at the rear of the TV centre, Wadala Chowk, road from Wadala Chowk to Urban Estate and Mall Road moved at a snail's pace since the vehicles moving into and out of these areas had to make long detours due to the Nakodar road witnessing a big blockade. While the city police had issued information regarding the diverted routes last evening, due to the lack of proper circulation of the information, a lot of residents suffered a lot. While Nakodar Chowk and some of the nearby roads were blocked in view of the festivities since last night, many of the the diverted routes will continue to be functional till Friday (February 14) 8 pm. The traffic coming to the city from the Nakodar side has been routed via the Tajpur CT Institute through the Urban Estate Phase 2 Cool Road and Samra Chowk. The traffic coming from the Kapurthala Chowk side has been routed through Workshop Chowk-Y Point Bhagat Singh Colony-Pathankot Chowk-Chugitti Chowk-PAP Chowk to the BSF Chowk side. The Shobha Yatra today passed through the Buta Mandi Gurdwara Sahib-Shri Guru Ravidass Chowk-Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar Chowk-PNB Chowk-Milap Chowk-Saheed Bhagat Singh Chowk-Adda Tanda Chowk-Adda Hoshiarpur-Mai Heeran Gate-Patel Chowk and back from Jail Road-Jyoti Chowk-Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar Chowk-Nakodar Chowk to the Buta Mandi Gurdwara Sahib. While a number of residents and commuters across city areas faced inconvenience due to the traffic bottlenecks created at the places through which the Shobha Yatra passed as well as areas adjoining the Nakodar road stretch, some residents said better police arrangements could have eased the trouble. ADC (Traffic) Mohinder Singh said, "While it is impossible to depute traffic personnel at every nook and cranny, much of the trouble is created when big tempos or vehicles try to take shortcuts through little streets in the congested localities, causing bottlenecks. However, our men have been working tirelessly all day to ensure smooth flow of traffic in the city and will be on duty all day tomorrow as well. The traffic situation will be much smoother tomorrow as only the Nakodar stretch will be blocked and no other area would be affected." For traffic queries and additional help, people can call on the traffic helpline number 0181-2227296. ‘Better police arrangements needed’

Tribune News Service
Jalandhar, February 13 Talking to mediapersons, Ravinder Dhir, senior member of the JAC and president of the Punjab Vyapar Sena, said traders and industrialists would organise a procession to Jagraon via Phagwara and Ludhiana. He said traders and industrialists of Phagwara and Ludhiana would also join them in the protest against the state government for levying heavy taxes on traders and industry. The JAC has also demanded resignation of Local Bodies Minister Anil Joshi for his "irresponsible and adamant" behaviour against traders and the state industry. Seeking Joshi’s expulsion from the party, the JAC has also written to BJP national president Raj Nath Singh. Joshi had recently said the traders and the industrialists had to pay property tax as per schedule for the commercial properties and that the tariff would not be reduced. The JAC has been demanding reduction in the property tax on commercial buildings from 3 to 1.5 per cent and is holding a protest for the past over two months. The traders and industrialists had laid siege to the residences of Forest Minister Bhagat Chunni Lal, CPS KD Bhandari, BJP MLA Manoranjan Kalia and SAD MLA Pargat Singh earlier this month in support of their demands. |

7 yrs after launch of scheme, construction work begins
Deepkamal Kaur Tribune News Service
Jalandhar, February 13 This too happened after the JIT allowed the owners to construct a basement in the plots which are otherwise at a 15-foot depth from the ground level. Since the scheme had been started at the fag end of the Congress regime, the successive SAD-BJP governments have taken little interest in it. It is now after a gap of more than six and a half years that the JIT began providing basic amenities by laying roads and installing streetlights. There are just four built-up houses in the scheme area which was earlier a site for brick kilns. Owing to a lower plinth level, most allottees either sold off the plots or kept waiting for the JIT to do land filling at the site. Even now after the JIT allowed the basement, plot owners are not fully convinced. Satpal Singh, who has just started constructing a house, said he was not made completely aware of the basement norms of the JIT. “I covered the entire 200 sq yard plot at the basement. After I was done with it, officials told me that I could cover only 100 sq yards. Now, I have been told to close 50 per cent of it when I have already invested Rs 25 lakh on the basement. With this much amount, I would have been done with my first floor construction as well,” he said.Ranjit Singh, another house owner, said it was now after seven years of scheme that the JIT had finally started giving some amenities. He said the vacant plots were being used by the MC staff to dump the city’s waste which had made the life of his family miserable. “With just about a few houses around, we feel a little insecure and want the JIT to be liberal with norms so that the plot owners quickly build up their houses,” he said. JIT SE Mukul Soni said there was a limit to the area for covering the basement. “The area covered varies with the plot sizes,” he said. The scheme had been started in 2007 by the then JIT Chairman Tajinder Singh Bittu. It was earlier named Yadvindra Enclave, but at the time of the allotment, it was changed to its present name. The JIT had earlier started issuing notices for the levying of non-construction charges to the plot owners who got the waiver through the consumer forum. |

Farmers’ union holds protest
Jalandhar, February 13 Santokh Singh Tagar, district president of the union said the ground water level had been going down day by day, which is the biggest threat to the farmers’ community as they would not be able to afford the cost of submersible pumps. The state government should initiate a programme to install such pumps. He said the Punjab Government should waive off loans of those farmers, who were unable to pay their debt. Balwinder Singh Bajwa, state president of the union said the government was encouraging the feudal system of land ownership by not distributing surplus land to small and marginal farmers under the Land Consolidation Act.
