Rs 21 cr tax recovered from PIMS Society
Jalandhar, February 8 The tax was recovered for the financial years 2006-07 and 2011-12. The department is now assessing the record for the financial year 2012-13 and is expecting to find more irregularities to the tune of Rs 45 crore made by the society. Many bank accounts of the hospital were also sealed by the Income Tax Department during the recovery of the tax demand. A case pertaining to this is going on at the Income Tax Tribunal in which the Income Tax Department has claimed that the society does not qualify for tax rebate, as it is not doing any charitable work for the welfare of society. The department has also cancelled the certificate 12AA of the society which entitled the society to a tax rebate. Now after winning the case in the tribunal, the department recovered the tax demand money of Rs 21 crore on Thursday by attaching an FDR and a bank account of the society in Andhra Bank. "We had found huge irregularities to the tune of Rs 25 crore at PIMS. Now, after getting directions from the Income Tax Tribunal, we have recovered the tax demand money by attaching their bank accounts. Now, we are assessing their records of the last year as well," said Sanjay Mishra, Commissioner, Income Tax. He also revealed that most of the bank accounts had been checked recently after the recovery. However, Dr Vimal Sikri, director, PIMS Society, has dismissed the claims made by the Income Tax Department and said that the matter was still under the consideration of the Income Tax Tribunal. "Presently, the case is under consideration of the Tribunal. The IT Department does not have any prerogative to recover the money. We are doing a charitable work for society and are hopeful to win the case," said Dr Sikri. |
Drug menace: Addicts inject intoxicant into student
Jalandhar, February 8 The victm's parents complained to the District Education Officer (Secondary), Neelam Kumari, in this regard and also lodged a police complaint. Maninder Singh, a VIIth standard student in the school, had gone to play, along with other students, in the ground at the rear of the school (which is used by the school). After running for some time, Maninder sat on the stairs of the ground to take rest when some addicts reportedly asked him to shift from there. When Maninder did not heed to their request, the addicts tried to inject the intoxicant, which they were using, into his arm. In the following struggle, Maninder was targeted on his hand. Pardeep Singh, an Uggi-based farmer and Maninder's father, said, “The addicts threatened Maninder not to tell the incident to anyone if he wanted to remain safe. So he kept quiet all day and only told this to us in the evening of January 23. The very next day, we went and complained to the school authorities, but they kept denying the incident. Maninder’s drawing teacher, who also takes physical education classes (who took students to the ground that day), was drunk on both occasions that we went to the school to complain about the matter.” On January 28, Maninder complained to the DEO (Secondary), following which she called the school staff to inquire the issue. While the principal was absent both on January 24 and 25, the teacher working as in charge denied that anything to this effect happened. The parents met the DEO (Secondary) again today, but no conclusion could not be reached, as the teacher who was in-charge on January 23, was not present today. School in-charge (on January 23), while talking to The Tribune, said, “There is no such issue. I did not hear anything of this sort. The student also did not tell us anything.” She also denied allegations that the drawing teacher was drunk. The principal said, “I was absent both on January 24 and 25. Otherwise, we maintain proper discipline in the school. On January 25, we also held a panchayat and members complained to the police." Maninder's parents first complained at the police station Uggi. Later a complaint was lodged at the Nakodar (Sadar) police station. SHO Nakodar police station said a probe was on in the case. DEO (Secondary) Neelam Kumari, said, “The parents are creating an issue over nothing. It is actually a matter of some unreturned money that the parents lent to the principal. He is now making excuses to get back at the school authorities. Meanwhile, the inquiry could not be completed today because the in-charge did not come.” Broken school wall
The school staff had lodged an FIR about a year ago regarding the menace of addicts and youths who come to the ground on bikes. The school hasn’t got grants for the construction of its rear wall despite repeated requests to the department for the past three to four years, the principal said. In the same school, a theft had taken place about a year ago, for which a complaint was lodged. No one has been caught so far. In another incident, the brothers of a school student had hit a female teacher, for which, too, a complaint was lodged. The DEO could not give any satisfactory answer as to why funds were not allocated for the boundary wall despite repeated threats and requests. |
Banned Chinese strings sold on Punjab Armed Police campus
Jalandhar, February 8 Shockingly, the strings were being sold from many illegal shops running inside the houses of many police personnel. On a visit to the campus by a Tribune team, many children were seen flying kites with the banned Chinese string "gattu" and "dragon dor" on the ground near the gurdwara. On being asked about the place from where they had bought the strings, they took the team to a nearby house selling these strings along with kites. When asked about the matter, the owner accepted running the illegal shop inside the house and also revealed that it were the parents who demanded these strings for their children. “After the Commissioner’s orders, we stopped selling these, but many police personnel, staying here, forced us to bring ‘gattu’ for their children. But we do inform the children about the dangers posed by these strings,” said Kanta, running a shop. Although the children seem to be aware of the potential dangers of these strings, they can't resist their use due to the string's easy availability near their houses. “We know this is very dangerous. Most of the time, we do cut our fingers, but we like it due to its strength,” said 12-year-old Ravinder Saini. The children also said that they never had a problem buying Chinese string, as most of the time their parents buy it. “They never stop us. We use it with utmost precaution. We try to fly it away from high-tension wires as we may get a shock from these like one of our friends,” said 11-year-old Aniket. He said their friend got a shock while flying a kite with "gattu" and their another friend fell unconscious trying to save him. Rahul S, Deputy Commissioner of Police, was shocked to hear the matter. He promised a speedy investigation into the sale of the banned string from houses of the police personnel. “This is a shocking news. We will conduct an inquiry into the matter and take necessary action against the violators,” he said. |

Demanding reduction of property tax charges on commercial properties, early VAT refunds and withdrawal of advance tax scheme, they expressed their grudges against the government. Bhandari came out of his house and chose to allow the traders to first vent out their ire. Dhir said, “All our demands seem to be falling on deaf ears as there has been no response from the government side. If we can elect you as our representatives, we can even make you step down.” Gursharan Singh said, “I have supported you during the polls seeking votes from the residents of your Jalandhar North constituency. But ever since we have launched these dharnas against the legislators, we are getting threatening messages that we better sit quite or there could be raids at our business premises.” The traders said they are not going to budge and sit quietly on the issue. As they kept saying, Bhandari did not speak up but was visibly angry. At this, Gursharan went ahead and said, “We know that you must not like all this, but it is you who has forced us to resort to saying all this.” While the dharna was still on, the staff of the CPS issued lists of various efforts that he had made for the welfare of traders to mediaperson. Students’ appeal to all religious heads
We respect and have faith in all the religions, including the respected caretakers of religious institutions. The only problem is from the high volume loudspeakers. The religious preachings can go on without loudspeakers. Use of wooden cabinet speakers inside the prayer hall can keep the sound within the hall. Pray we must but not at the cost of others. Right to religion does not include the right to perform religious activities on loudspeakers, which produce a high volume of noise. Anyone who wishes to live in peace, comfort and quiet within his house has the right to prevent the noise reaching to him as pollutant. Everyone has the right to live in peace in his own house, right to study and sleep without getting disturbed. There is a special request from the students as the final school and Board exams are going to start from February 1 in all the three major school boards in Punjab, including Punjab Board, CBSE & ICSE. So, this is a crucial time for them to concentrate and prepare without any disturbance. Loudspeakers must be totally banned. Satwinder Saini, Kapurthala Introduce one-way traffic
Dr BR Ambedkar Chowk is a very important landmark for the city. Traffic chaos at this intersection is evident to all and cannot be denied. It is a routine scene out there, be it any hour of the day. The traffic police cannot be blamed here but should be complimented! They do their duty but are helpless with respect to the burden of vehicles at this Chowk. Keeping in mind the close proximity of buildings, the expansion of roads cannot be undertaken. Mere construction of fly-overs will not suffice.
The authorities should implement a one-way circuit at this point. This hopefully will meet the needs of the hour and of the future as well. Dr Randeep Singh Lamba,
Jalandhar
