MC plans to net Rs 20 crore as CLU dues
Jalandhar, February 12 The MC office has already prepared a list of 100-plus such defaulters and plans to put the same on its official website in a day or two. The list includes the names of business establishments and their owners on the 14 commercially declared roads of the city who had put their residential buildings to commercial use without the payment of the requisite amount of charges to the MC. Municipal Town Planner Tejpreet Singh said his staff had prepared the list of such buildings in their respective sectors which he had got compiled. He said the sealing of such buildings would begin in a day or two. The MC had yesterday sealed three commercial properties in Adarsh Nagar. The MTP said even as the exact amount to be recovered was yet to be calculated, he expected a recovery of Rs 1 crore from the owners. MC Jalandhar has 14 roads in Jalandhar which have been declared commercial. These include Empress Garden Road, Harbans Nagar main road, Old Post Office-Circuit House-Model Town Road, Mahavir Marg, Mall Road, Rainbow Road, Model Town Post Office Road, Link Road, Ladowali Road, Police Lines Road, Garha Road, Cool Road, GT Road and 120-feet road. The MC House, for the past few years, has been proposing the declaration of more roads as commercial, but owing to several pending formalities at the government end, there has been no addition in the number of declared roads. Even in the last MC House on January 24, the councillors had cleared the declaration of the left-side road from 276 Mota Singh Nagar to Kidney Hospital on Cool Road as commercial. 27 tenders for MLA works
The B&R wing of the MC today received 27 tenders from societies for 53 works pertaining to road laying in various legislative constituencies falling in the city. SE Kulwinder Singh said the remaining e-tenders would be opened tomorrow. He said the works pertain to Rs 15 crore received from the government for various discretionary works of the MLAs. He said each of the four city MLAs had listed 10 to 15 works for his constituency. The amount will be received as part of the Rs 750-crore loan sanctioned from

Bathinda hospital starts treatment, but Civil Hospital cites guidelines
Civil Hospital to issue cancer relief form to 12-year-old patient studying in Jalandhar Aparna Banerji Tribune News Service
Jalandhar, February 12 A surprising aspect of the entire situation is that while the same papers are being accepted at the empanelled hospital in Bathinda, the Jalandhar-based empanelled hospital claims more documents (additional address proof of Kehkashan or her father) are needed to provide help under the scheme. This, despite the recent state government guidelines that cancer treatment is to be provided to all patients immediately for free and forms under the CM Relief Fund have to cleared within a week. Talking to The Tribune, government teacher Mandeep Kaur and government officials Lupin Kumar and Ajmer Singh, who have been instrumental in the family’s help, said, “While at Bathinda, Kehkashan’s treatment was started for free just after we submitted her Aadhar Card and three photos without any extra questions being asked, at the Jalandhar’s empanelled hospital, we were told that her ‘free’ treatment would start only when the (CM Relief Fund) form was filled. The local (empanelled) hospital also asked us to pay for all tests and drugs so far. In Bathinda, we haven’t been charged a single penny.” Dr Sudharshan Sharma from the local Patel Hospital said, “The guidelines we have received from the government clearly say a case can’t be cleared unless we have an address proof like a ration card or a passport, driving licence etc. We have received no updates on the same. About treatment also, we have been told to start it only when the form is cleared.” Notably, the lack of treatment here forced the family to get the treatment started from Bathinda, where they are highly satisfied with the treatment. Civil Surgeon Dr RL Bassan said, “The guidelines we have so far received, say a residence proof, except the Aadhaar card is needed, but we will send it on the basis of the Aadhaar card. The only contention is it might not get clearance from Chandigarh.” Dr Manjinder Singh Sidhu from Max Healthcare Super Speciality Hospital, Bathinda, said, “An Aadhar card with the patient’s residence proof is enough to start the treatment for free. Her father’s address proof is not required. The instructions from our Civil Surgeon say we have to start immediate treatment. We have had another patient with similar documents being cleared here and we received a go-ahead from Chandigarh as well.” So far, Kehkashan has received one chemotherapy session (worth Rs 9,832) at Bathinda and she was not charged anything. Dr Sidhu also said that two more chemo sessions and a possible surgery would still be required after which some years later (at age 15), she might need a prosthesis which will cost anything between Rs 50,000 to Rs 4 lakh depending on her requirements. The do-gooders The family has so far been able to gather about Rs 1, 50,000. Manjinder and Pavittar Singh from Wadala have provided Rs 33,000 to the family, Vikramjit Singh has provided Rs 46,000, DIPS school authorities have lent Rs 10,000, Rakesh Sharma, a UK-based resident has provided Rs 30,000. Lotus Bawa authorities and do-gooder Supreet have provided Rs 10,000 and a number of other donors have provided Rs 4,000 to 5,000 |
Assn resents exclusion of lawn tennis from selection trials
Jalandhar, February 12 On Tuesday, the department has announced sports trials for the U-14, U-17 and U-19 (boys and girls) categories and excluded lawn tennis for the fourth consecutive year. The association has now decided to take up the matter with Punjab Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal. "Three years ago, the government excluded lawn tennis from the list of sports for which the government holds selection trials every year. The selected students from the day scholar wing get Rs 100 per day as diet money. Since the government thought the game was expensive, they excluded it from the list of selection trials. This has actually disappointed around 300 students in the district as they could not compete in this year's trials even after winning many national and international championships. “We will shortly approach Sukhbir Badal to include the game in this year's selection trials," said Raman Kumar, Secretary, Lawn Tennis Association, Jalandhar. At present, most private schools are running full fledged tennis academies on their premises by hiring private coaches. Due to the recent opening of many more academies in the district, the performance of the tennis players in the district has really gone up. But despite being national winners many times, they are not getting any support from the state government. "I have won various national level championships in the last few years. Still the government is not supporting me. As the game is very expensive, the government should grant some seats, if not many, to keep alive our motivation and self-belief," said Ranjit Singh, a student of MGN Tennis Academy. Students studying in private schools do get a chance to make use of the infrastructure and coaches provided by the authorities. Many government school students are also performing well. “These students do not have the required infrastructure and professional coaches who could improve their game and bring them at par with their counterparts. The government can grant at least one wing in a district," said Jaskaran Thapar, a national level tennis player, studying in Seth Hukum Chand SD Public School. When contacted, Deputy Director, Sports, Sohan Lal Lotey, said due to less number of players, there was no need to open a lawn tennis sports wing in each district. The Sports Deputy Director also said that though the sport was not included in the selection trials, it was still very much a part of the speed trials, which gives huge benefits to the local players, who got through to the trials. |
2 days ahead of Ravi Das Jayanti, another train leaves for Varanasi
Jalandhar, February 12 This was the second special train to leave Jalandhar for the birth place of Guru Ravi Das for the second consecutive day. It is for the first time that two special trains were booked for the purpose. Yesterday, thousands of devotees saw the departure of Begumpura Express. The special train was an initiative of Dera Sachkhand Ballan, whose head Sant Niranjan Dass had come in a bedecked car and boarded the train. Former Jalandhar Mayor Surinder Mahey who, too, had come to bid adieu to the devotees said while some passengers had paid donations, others, who could not afford these, were allowed to travel free of cost. Dalit leader Seth Satpal Mal, too, attended the gala ceremony yesterday at the station. Thousands of youths and women had come from far-flung places in trucks, lorries, buses and bikes to participate in the celebrations. They danced to the tunes of hymns played on DJs outside the station for about three hours before the train moved on at 2 pm. Music was also played aloud at the platform number 1, where devotees sat down and took part in a satsang before moving on. Men and women were seen making videos on cameras and mobile phones. Tea and langar stalls were held for the entire first half of the day. A shobha yatra is scheduled to be held tomorrow from Satguru Ravi Dass Dham at Bootan Mandi, which remained bedecked today. The under-construction Dham is coming up as a huge marble building on Nakodar Road. Surinder Mahey, who is associated with the construction part, said Rs 4 crore had already been spent. “There still is a lot of interior work to be done which may take another three years,” he said. |
Multiple health workers sweep roads to protest against govt
Jalandhar, February 12 The protesters also expressed anger that while the Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal laid foundation stones of projects worth crores in Jalandhar recently, the health workers weren't even allowed to meet him despite their genuine demand for better salaries. The hunger strike of their associate workers in Chandigarh (outside the Director, Health's, office) also reached its third day today. Meanwhile, Ninder Kaur, state president, who had been sitting on hunger strike since February 3, had to be shifted to hospital after her high blood pressure. The protesters rued that so far none of the government officials had asked about the health of these workers. While the protests by workers were being held across the state, the workers said the protest would be on until the government agreed to their demands. Their prime demands include increase in salaries and regularisation of their services. They said while they were being paid Rs 8,000, their counterparts were being paid Rs 30,000 to Rs 35,000. |
Administration declares holiday today
Jalandhar, February 12 The establishments outside the municipal limits, however, will only be closed for half day. The holiday has been declared keeping in mind the sentiments of people. Additonal Magistrate and ADC Preneet Bhardwaj has also issued orders that all liquor and meat shops within the limits of Jalandhar (rural) shall be closed on February 13 and 14 from 9 am to 10 pm in view of the Parkash Utsav of Guru Ravidas. The orders say that while on February 13 a shobha yatra will be taken out across villages and towns of the district, on February 14, animal killing is held against religious tenets and customs, it being the birth anniversary of a great saint. |
Banks witness heavy rush after reopening
Jalandhar, February 12 Transactions worth crores were held on the first day after the reopening of the banks after the strike. Amrit Lal, convener, UFBU, Jalandhar, said 20,000 pending cheques, amounting to Rs 200 crore, which were ready on February 8, were cleared today while 30,000 more would be cleared tomorrow. The banks would start functioning normally from Friday onwards, he claimed. The bank employees and officers had observed a nationwide strike on Monday and Tuesday to press for the aceptance of their demands like immediate wage revision and to protest banking reforms. Around 7,000 bank employees and officers remained on strike and 1,000 branches in the district remained closed during the strike.
