Govt slams discoms for announcing power cuts

New Delhi, February 1
The Delhi government today condemned the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission's (DERC) decision to increase the tariff which will come into effect from today. Slamming power distribution firms for announcing power cuts on the plea of lack of funds, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said the truth on their financial condition will come out in the CAG report on discoms. Power tariff in the national Capital was yesterday hiked by up to eight per cent by the DERC.

"The power companies are saying that they do not have money, so where has their money gone. "After CAG's report, we would get to know whether they are really facing a financial crisis or not," said Kejriwal.

Asked if the government would take action against discoms, which have announced eight-10 hour power cut effective from today, he said, "Let the CAG report come out and then we would proceed as per its findings".

Kejriwal had yesterday accused BSES discoms of trying to "blackmail" the government by threatening power cuts up to 10 hours a day, and warned them of strict action, including possible cancellation of licenses.

Kejriwal said Tata and Ambanis, who run three electricity distribution firms in Delhi, were not the only companies in the country and government was willing to bring in new players.

"There are no reasons for power cuts. I want to give them a warning that if they try to create panic in future, the government will take strict action against them," Kejriwal added.

Dismissing any valid reasons for such extreme steps, the Chief Minister said there were many question marks over the discoms account.

Kejriwal hand-in-glove with discoms: Cong

New Delhi, February 1
The Delhi Congress today accused Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of working hand in glove with power distribution companies in the city. Condemning the move to hike the power tariff by the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC), Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Arvinder Singh held Kejriwal responsible for power tariff hike.

"It had been established that despite announcing 50 per cent reduction in the power tariff, the fact that the DERC raised the rate of the power, showed that the power discoms, Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi Party were acting in league," said Singh.

He alleged that the threat of power cuts by the discoms was a deal between the companies and Kejriwal so that power tariff could be hiked in future. He asked Kejriwal whether he would sit on a dharna in front of the DERC office.

Former Congress MLA Mukesh Sharma said that there was no connection with the decision to audit the accounts of the discoms by the CAG and the reduction or hike in the power tariff. They said the people of Delhi were being deliberately misled and misguided on the electricity issue.

Demanding a rollback in the power hike, Congress leaders said the attention of people was being diverted from core issues, as Kejriwal was deliberately creating problems on the electricity front. The Congress accused Kejriwal of cheating the people by making announcement to give 50 per cent reduction in electricity bills. They said the Chief Minister should make his stance clear to the people of Delhi.

Rs 7.69-cr heist: 17-yr-old mastermind in police net
Three associates arrested; Rs 1.5 crore recovered
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, February 1
A 17-year-old office employee of a Delhi-based businessman, Rajesh Kalra, has been identified as the mastermind behind the Rs 7.69-crore car robbery in Lajpat Nagar on January 28. The police have arrested him along with three of his alleged associates. They have been identified as Gulzar, alias Bhola, Tilak, alias Tinku, and Praveen, who have criminal backgrounds. The juvenile cannot be identified according to the law.

Rs 1.5 crore has been recovered and raids are conducting to arrest six other accused in the case. On Tuesday, Kalra's employees and his business partner Rakesh Kumar were transporting Rs 7.69 crore in a Honda City car to deposit the money in two banks in Karol Bagh. At the BRT corridor, a gang of robbers intercepted their vehicle and stole their car, robbing the cash.

The juvenile said he was allegedly aware of Kalra's monetary transactions and had contacted a criminal named Shakti Naidu to plan the heist. Shakti, who was arrested for a bank robbery in 2002, roped in another alleged criminal Pradeep from Karala village, North-West Delhi. Pradeep then approached nine others for the robbery and charted the route to transfer the cash.

"On January 27, the juvenile had tipped off the gang about the money transaction. He was inside the car during the robbery and was using more than five mobile phones to inform the gang about the movement of the car through text messages," said a senior police officer.

BJP seeks rollback of hiked tariff
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, February 1
Demanding roll back of the recent hike in power tariff, the Delhi BJP has shot five questions at Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Senior party leader Vijay Goel said the AAP had promised a reduction of 50 per cent in power tariff for all consumers, but instead of reduction, people are facing 8 per cent rise in tariff.

The government must resolve the issue with the discoms in such a way that auditing must go on and people must not suffer from power related problems.

Why Arvind Kejriwal do not ensure uninterrupted power supply to Delhi in case discoms do not agree to do so? Why he has not yet announced the time frame within which the CAG audit of the discoms will complete? Why is he not coming out with a clear time frame on this?

Why Kejriwal did not try to break the monopoly of these companies by, at least, allowing both of them to operate in whole of Delhi. This would have allowed consumers to have some choice and the companies would have been compelled to bring down power tariff.
