Govt forms committee for Jan Lokpal Bill
New Delhi, January 9 He said that secretaries of the Urban Department, Law and Finance besides eminent advocate, Rahul Mehra would be members of the committee. "We will try to pass the Bill by the last week of January or the first week of February from Ramlila Grounds," said Kejriwal at a press conference. Jan Lokpal is one of the promises, APP made in its election manifesto. It had promised passage of the anti-graft Bill on December 29 at a special session of the Assembly from the Ramlila Grounds. Soon after winning the confidence vote in the Delhi Assembly, Kejriwal termed the passage of the Jan Lokpal Bill the 'most important issue' on the agenda of his government. "The Jan Lokpal Bill is the most important issue on our agenda," he had told reporters. Jan Lokpal Bill is AAP's version of the Lokpal, or the anti-corruption ombudsman. Kejriwal has already announced decisions on reducing water and power tariffs which he had promised before the elections. When asked about the existing Lokayukta, Kejriwal said the anti-corruption ombudsman would be totally independent and even the Chief Minister's office would have no influence over it. "At present, the anti-corruption branch is with Delhi Police. This branch will be transferred to Lokayukta," Kejriwal said, adding this step is important as otherwise any corruption against the state head would not be investigated properly. |
BJP to hold dharna against AAP today
New Delhi, January 9 To expose APP leaders, the members of the Delhi BJP will hold a dharna at Rajghat tomorrow, said a member of the BJP. Addressing a joint press conference today, the Vijay Goel and former Delhi BJP chief Vijender Gupta said, "The details of corruption done by Congress ministers and the Congress Chief Minister are there in the CAG reports, Shunglu Committee report and the judgments given by the Lokayukta. What more proof is required for the Chief Minister, Arving Kejriwal, to move against them?" "The fact is that after the AAP formed an alliance with the Congress to come to power, it has decided to put cases against the Congress former ministers and former Chief Minister on backburner. Otherwise there is no reason that even a single complaint has not been lodged against any of them during the past 10 days," they said. "It is the same Arvind Kejriwal who had come out with a 370-page chargesheet against the Congress. Had he really been honest about catching the big fish, he should have lodged a case against the former Congress ministers and the Chief Minister during the past 10 days, But instead he is skirting the issue now by saying that the cases will be filed only after someone gives the proof of the graft," said Goel. The BJP leaders also condemned the behaviour of some of its ministers. "We all know the way AAP ministers are behaving in an arrogant manner. They have taken cars with VIP numbers, their Chief Minister was forced to quit a set of duplex after public furore, while another minister has taken two houses. It is very likely that other ministers will also take government accommodation. It is clear that what they preach and practise does not match," Goel added. |
Kejriwal's ‘Janta Darbar’ to begin tomorrow
New Delhi, January 9 On Saturdays, the cases will be heard by the Chief Minister himself and on other days, it will be heard by a minister. Kejriwal said that he would try to work out the cases on the spot by calling the authorities concerned. The remaining cases will be noted on the basis of categories such as the nature of grievances or whether they are related to the government. The government will also have a monitoring system to check whether the victims' cases are being worked out. The minister will call the victim to know the status of the case. If the case is not worked out, the officer will be held responsible. Saying that public grievance cases are the result of wrong policies of the government, Kejriwal said, "Having seen the response of citizens in the advisory helpline launched yesterday, I believe there will be a rush of people for Janta Darbar, who have got their cases registered with different agencies." He said the advisory helpline received 3,904 phone calls. When the advisor responded to their calls, 824 people took interest, the rest simply ignored. Fifty-three calls were of serious nature while 38 were ready for a sting operation. When asked about the departments where sting operations were done, the Chief Minister refused to reveal the names. To begin with, the call centre has 10 lines. When traffic on helpline increased, five additional lines were added. The helpline will have 30 seats to respond to the callers from tomorrow. |
Nigerian held for threatening jewellers
New Delhi, January 9 "We were informed that more than 18,000 people, especially jewellers across India, had received threats via SMSes on their mobile phones within a month. Through the SMS, the receiver was told that somebody had paid Rs 10 lakh to kill him and if he is ready to pay Rs 11 lakh within 48 hours, he can be spared. These SMSes created a panic among the receivers," said Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Yadav. According to the police, the receivers of the messages started living in fear and confined themselves to their homes. "The person who received the threat was directed to SMS 'Yes' if he was ready to pay the money. When he would send the accused an SMS of accepting their deal, they would give him a bank account number and direct him to deposit the money in it," said Yadav. The police learnt that several complaints in regard to the threats were lodged at different police stations, including the ones at Shakarpur and Maurya Enclave and also in Bangalore and Kolkata. The Crime Branch also registered a case on Wednesday on the basis of a complaint made by a jeweller based in Punjabi Bagh. According to the police, Vikas is the mastermind of the racket. He was imprisoned in 2012 in a cheating case. Inside the jail, he met some Nigerian criminals who were also locked up for similar offences. When he was released from prison, he introduced Parkash to Osazee. Vikas allegedly arranged pre-activated SIM cards from different shops in west Delhi and purchased mobile phones and laptops from different websites. "He used a Hong Kong-based Internet site to send bulk SMSes. Earlier, he would send messages to different people, informing them that they had won a lottery. In case a person contacted Vikas, he would direct him to deposit advanced money as transfer charges to get the prize amount from a foreign country," explained Yadav. But due to the awareness in the public on the lottery racket, not many people came forward to claim the amount. According to the police, Vikas realized that the racket was not lucrative and he then thought of something else. "Vikas came to the conclusion that jewellers are the most vulnerable targets. He said that some of the jewellers don't want to file police complaints. He claimed that they have the maximum cash flow in their businesses," said Yadav. |
