Residents block passage of garbage trucks
Jalandhar, January 7 Ever since a bridge on the Kala Sanghian drain falling on the way to the dump had given way in December last week, the garbage trucks have been moving from an alternative route within the colony. Residents today closed their colony gates, not allowing any truck to pass through the place. They alleged that the trucks were not well covered and left filth on the passage, making their surroundings unhygienic. Dr Varinder Kalia, in charge of the sanitation wing of the MC, reached the spot. He tried to convince them that the work of repairing the bridge was on and it would take them just about a week, but the residents did not budge and sought an assurance from a senior functionary. It was after Mayor Sunil Jyoti reached the spot at 3 pm and convinced the residents that they allowed the trucks to pass by. The residents were given an assurance by him that the trucks would be covered with net and any spillover would be removed by five safai sewaks who would be on duty till 5 pm. At this, the residents allowed the MC to ply their garbage trucks till January 15. |

PIMS: Paramedical staff to continue their protest
Jalandhar, January 7 Protesting against the PIMS Medical and Educational Charitable Society, headed by senior Akali leader and Punjab Cabinet Minister Surkjit Singh Rakhra, the paramedical and clerical staff are firm on their decision to continue their strike indefinitely. The agitating staff has been demanding that the government should take over the PIMS instead of inducting new members in the management or give this premier healthcare institution to some corporate house. Apprehending reccurrence of the problem in the near future, the agitating employees said the new members of the management might fail to pay them salaries after some months, forcing the employees to further go on strike. We have been working under uncertainty for the past over two years and want that either the Punjab or the Union Government should run PIMS for the betterment of the employees, doctors and the general public of the region, claimed Dharminder Kumar, an employee leader. The employees complained that the management had given increments (ranging from Rs 10,000 to Rs 75,000) to selected employees even though the institute was facing a severe financial crunch, having no money to pay salaries to the staff. The agitating employees claimed that the PIMS management had paid them their due salaries but without any increments, which had further added to their disappointment. Moreover, 35 general duty assistants (GDAs), appointed through a Panchkula-based private agency, were underpaid and their six months’ salaries were not released by the agency. The agency personnel and the PIMS management had been threatening them with showing the door, which was a gross violation of human rights, the protesters alleged. |
