The Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Santosh Chaudhary, visited the Civil Hospitals at Rahon, Nawanshahr, ECHS poly clinic and blood bank on Saturday. She took stock of the staff strength and status of utilisation of funds for implementation of the National Rural Health Mission from the Civil Surgeon.

Chaudhary, while talking to mediapersons blamed the state government for not properly utilising the funds sent under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), thus, depriving the poor of healthcare services. " The Centre Government has sought project proposals from the states for the purpose but the Punjab government is yet to submit its projects to seek funds under National Rural Health Mission . Besides, the state government has not been providing lucrative salaries and facilities to the doctors especially specialist doctors, that is why they are not coming forward to join the government job", she said.

However, when asked regarding the status of utilisation of Centre Government's funds and implementation of NRHM programme in the Congress-ruled states and the demands of better pay scales, regularisation of services etc being raised by the staff recruited under National Rural Health Mission, she tried to evade the issue by saying that she had been seeking reports from all the states to chalk out a comprehensive plan to ensure that the common man could avail the benefits of the schemes under National Health Mission.

The Civil Surgeon, Dr Dharam Pal apprised the minister that the building of the new upgraded hospital at Chandigarh Road here was ready but narrow approach road was causing delay in shifting the hospital there.

The Union Minister while assuring to take up the issue for expediting the process said she would make efforts to set up a college for ANM / GNM training under National Health Mission at the existing building of the Civil Hospital.
